DC has been trying to get Moore to expand the Watchmen universe since they made
gobs of money off the movie.  I don't think he does any comics at all anymore
and lives like Rorschach.  DC owns the characters so I guess they're going to
take a chance with other writers.  I'm sure everyone knows it's a huge
set of expectations to live up to.

and extensions of other authors' (public domain) properties? Watchmen is
essentially a sequel to the original Charlton properties.

primarily a 20th century once, it might have been a bit forward-looking of
Shakespeare to anticipate it by 400 years.

There's nothing inimically wrong with a prequel. If J. Michael Straczynski can
handle them, let's see. Given he used them in Babylon 5, he's hardly no
stranger to the concept.

They already have made several Watchmen prequels. There was a video game, and a
couple of role-playing modules for the old DC Heroes game. The first one was
definitely canonical, and had a fair amount of backstory.

Is there something wrong with wanting to see, say, Rorschach and Nite-Owl take
on the Underboss? The Comedian going all Punisher on NYC criminals? Or the
Minutemen doing anything?

story...essentially one would have to be familiar with Kirby's New Gods from
the '70s...reading the "52" series...and reading at least a years worth of DC
comics prior to this event. *sigh* This is why I stay away from shit like this.

Libra was an obscure one-shto JL villain. His "new" origina was revealed in a
one-shot, but it wasn't really relevant to the storyline.

A lot of the stuff as pulled in from Morrison's other work. Mister MIracle was
from Seven Soldiers of Victory, his series. I believe the Super Squad
orwhatever was as well. The Orion death was tied in with the recent Death of
the New Gods. batman's escape and murder of Darkseid was in Morrison's Batman
series.

I read the Identity Crisis hardcover, and it only covered the miniseries,
not the tie-ins (were they any??), and I could follow it well.

One thing I wondered was that the storyline had some major implications
for DC characters with their own titles.  Like Robin.  So fans of Robin
would need to get the miniseries to keep up with their character.


Crossovers _can_ be a lot of fun, and building one well so that people
aren't lost by only following a few of the titles is a very tricky thing.
I know I'll take flak for this, but "Infinity War" handled this problem
pretty well.  The only "mandatory" crossovers were between "Warlock and
The Inifinity Watch" and "Infinity War."

optional reading...its a lost cause. I can't tell you how many editors have
announced crossover/world-changing events on Marvel/DC/etc titles exclaiming,
"No, no...readers will only have to read the main book. If they're fans or
already reading a specific title...then they'll experience bonus material."
Bullshit. My god, between Dark Reign and Civil War I owe an ass kicking to
every scribe at Marvel. While its still painfully fresh on my mind...here are
the top things that convinced me Morrison was drunk, high or both while
conceiving this story.
1.) Who the hell is Libra? I get he's some kind of prophet for the coming
crisis. But specifically who is he? Why is he even doing this?
2.) I attritube this to not being invested in DC as a whole...but Martian
Manhunter gets killed in an unceremoniously manner...is this supposed to
illicit anything from me? In fact its almost as if Morrison has had an issue
with the character and offed him in said fashion. And for gods sake...the
artwork of the scene...I didn't even know it was MM! When did MM get captured?
Its just, "Oh yeah, I found a top tier superhero walking about...I'm gonna kill
'im!"
3.)Orion's murder. So? I mean really...the same concept of presenting the act
so nonchalantly. In fact you don't even see the act until the story is washing
over your eyes like burning lava. You can't even get a grip on the story to
care that this is happening. If Orion is sooooo important...why do we just get
a body in the trash?
4.) Again, I'm a ultra casual DC reader. I don't buy DC comics. I check out
TPBs from the local library and return to previously scheduled programming. Was
this book/series not meant to bring in new readership? I thought that was
supposed to be the point of "shakeup" events. To clear the dust off of the
established patterns and throw things in disarray. All the while giving new
blood and starting point to be invested in the characters. I know vaguely of
the Monitors. I know nothing of Dan Turpin. I know next to nothing of Mister
Miracle. Was the Japanese wannabe superheroes a tongue in cheek joke or
something?
5.) Lastly, by the time I got to the solo adventure of Superman travelling
between universes...I felt like I should've been dropping acid to know WTF was
going on. I know these characters have shown up at some point in DC history and
maybe were of some importance...but to me, it was as if Morrison had pulled out
some of the least known and relevant persons just to fuck with the reader. And
again...maybe that was the point. At this point...I actually stopped
attentively reading and started flipping pages hoping this book would make
sense. Wait?! Did Superman turn into a fucking robot and is now fighting a
vampire?!? Wonder Woman is riding around on a giant pit bull with a face as
equaling frightening? I finally made it to what seems to be the end to again
see Batman get killed. And here's the kicker. At this point of all the
shenanigans...I didn't care. Not because I'm a jaded comic fan. Or because I
know you can't kill the face of the company. But because he wasn't even around
while all this shit was going on! Sure he got captured by the self righteous
Green Lantern chick (who apparently was being mind controlled or possesed) and
then got needles in the brain. But then he just *BAM* shows up and shoots
Darkseid (or whats left of him)...only to be blasted himself. I just wanted it
to be over. Well until Ultimate Final Crisis II: The Final Retcon, that is.
Ugh.

The main problem of FC, IMO, was that of most mainstream events, and the TPBs
that follow. They don't make a whole lot of sense unless you read, if not all
the tie-ins, then at least certain key ones.

One of the basic premises of the Marvel Universe is that the general public is
incredibly distrustful of, and often times downright mislead about mutants. 
The Xmen have often been viewed as either a rogue group meant to be feared, a
secretive group of super powered beings secretly out to take down humans, or
the symbol of the end of humanity itself.  Only rarely have they actually been
seen as heroes.  More often than not their exploits are either unknown or
completely misunderstood.  And lets not forget that they have DIRECT ties to
some of the most "feared" mutants on the planet.  In short...it's as if Osama
Bin Laden (Magneto) had once been a leader of the NRA, and had been best
friends with Charleton Heston when they, together, co-founded the NRA.  At that
point, it wouldn't take much to make the NRA suddenly viewed by the government
as a direct threat, and make even people who have once been "friendly" with it
turn against it.

The Avengers being put in a situation where they have to go directly against
the X men makes perfect sense to me, and the inner conflicts and direct
conflicts it would bring about make for some interesting storylines.

The Boys is an interesting look into the idea of "power corrupts, absolute
power corrupts absolutley" when applied to corporation created and controlled
superheroes.  Superheroes in that world are totally batshit crazy with all
sorts of sick sexual deviants and homocidal urges.  But they have a corporation
backing them up keeping their reputations polished and doing dirty work behind
the scenes to cover up the sick stuff.  The corporation makes money by running
actual comic books off of the heroes adventures.  Think about reading
Spider-Man knowing he's *real* and everything you are reading really happened
(with some exaggeration and polish to make it cooler).  Now think about the
crippling emotional/social damage these superheroes have when you consider that
they get their powers as young teens and from then on are basically owned by a
corporation that does whatever they can to keep them happy and push them to be
perfect model superheroes in the public eye.  The Boys are a team assembled to
make them pay for the crimes that society is unaware of.  It's sick and twisted
and brutally violent and pornographic at times and it's kinda like a horrific
car accident, you can't not look.  I read it religiously when I had time, but I
haven't read anything past mid 50s in issues.  One of the main characters is
modeled after Simon Pegg in appearance and rumor is Simon Pegg is actually
signed on for a possible movie deal.

Squadron Supreme was pretty good.  It just got bogged down by delays and stuff.
Now, 100 BULLETS is one of those that I started reading, got af ew of the early
tpb and then stopped reading it before any of hte big reveals.  I keep debating
going back and starting over with that series ast well.  It's just the tpb are
so expensive for some of these sereies.

It's a combination of 100 Bullets w/ an Authority tone.  There's a nice
conspiracy bent to it, w/ the graphic gritty superhero stuff.  It's not so much
that Ennis is pulling the plug on the series, as much as the story is getting
to a natural conclusion.  In early interviews a few years back, Ennis had
already stated that the series wouldn't make it much farther past the 60s,
which actually works really well.  Honestly, when people in that universe die
as quickly as they do (and "realistically" so in the context of that story),
the series can't go on forever.  Another title (also a favorite of mine now)
that's very similar in tone is Irredeemable (but not quite as conspiracy
driven).  I tend to like comics that have a clear underlying arc/conspiracy
that gets peeled back slowly.  I also really liked the Squadron Supreme reboot
a few years back in the Marvel MAX universe.

Three Inches: Having now watched it in its entirety, I'd have to say... it's
arguably a better show (based on the pilot) then Alphas. That's not to say that
Alphas is a bad show, and it definitely grew into being a good/great show.

Still, if I was choosing which show to go with from the pilots, I'd have gone
with Three Inches. Without going overboard, it's more of a "geek" show and has
a bit more sense of humor. I also like the fac thtat our viewpoint character is
a "freak," not a normal human (as much as Rosen is the viewpoint character on
Alphas).

Supposeldy it was originally going to be a half-hour comedy. There's no way
that could have come about based on the pilot, without a 180 degree overhaul.

Like I noted, really the closest comparison between the two shows would be
between Brimstone and Reaper. The former is a serious show with a fair amount
of humor, the other is a humorous show with some seriousness.

Of course, in an ideal world you'd have SyFy airing Alphas and Three Inches.

Yes, it's kind of like Alphas. Then again, Reaper is kinda like Brimstone, and
Warehouse 13 is kinda like Friday the 13th the Series. Take a basic concept and
run it in a different direction. Doesn't mean you can't like both, or that one
excludes the other.

In any case, if it's on in repeats, could someone post? It's not showing up on
my DVR guide. There are 167 movies listed at SyFy's website, and Three Inches
is not one of them. It's not listed in their TV show section (although Tin Man,
that hasn'tbeen "new" in years, is there). it's not on their show schedule.
They seem to be burying it pretty thoroughly.

Yeah, I saw it, well parts of it.  I wasn't paying too close of attention.  The
show was very similar to Alphas; I can see why they had that concern.  Wasn't
too bad, but Alphas is the better show (though this one could have come out
well too, given the chance to grow).  If it were to continue, I would have
liked to see it take a more comedic direction to help differentiate it.  There
were a few themes starting there, that reminded me a lot of the show Reaper
from a few years back.  Taking it a little more that way would have helped, I
think.

The X men (X factor, I think actually) had "The Twelve" who were mutants who
were supposed to be key to the future of mankind.  It looks like that was
wrapped up later on in a crossover event.  For a long time only three of the
Twelve were known (Cable, Cyclops, and Jean Grey.)   Now that I looked, I
remember it was Destiny who first introduced them.  Eventually it turned out it
was a group of mutants who Apocalypse wanted to gather, so he planted the "12"
legend to get them together, only to try and use them to become omnipotent.

No, this was a series started in 2007 by JMS using 12 "obscure characters" from
Marvel's earlier incarnation as Timely Comics during the Golden Age of Comics.
Basic plot is that these superheroes were on a mission against Nazis and were
caught in a basement and put into suspension but hten forgotten, later to be
found in the 21st century.
It wasn't bad, but very random.  Some of the characters were definitely odd,
with some of them being people who were just wearing costumes.
At this point though I have no idea where the my first 8 issues are to reread
them, so will have to wait until the TPB comes out I guess.

It only included the LAST issue JMS did, which was considerably HIGHER than
what JMS run had averaged because it was the BIG one more day finale issue with
all the press and whatnot about it. If you extend the graph to include JMS's
entire run you would see that JMS run did the same dive from when he started,
until civil war tie ins pulled it back up, then one more day skyrocketed it to
where it started on that chart.

the chart only included the lowest slowing issue in any given month. Generally,
that would have little effect on it, sure, but it does that to be purposely
misleading.

The downturn follows exactly the overall drop in sales across all of marvel and
dc comics over the same timeline. Spiderman's drop is almost identical to the
overall drop.

I'm reading Kevin Smith's BIONIC MAN comic but not too impressed with that one.
In the past I've liked his writing, but he seems to suffer as JMS does with not
being able to finish a book out.  BTW, who is finishing THE TWELVE?  I heard it
was being finished but figured that JMS was not doing it.
I'm also looking for new writers who may have slipped under  the radar.  I've
read Bendis and a few others but looking for someone with deep storytelling
like Gaiman was good at (although I know that Gaiman may be too lofty a goal to
aim for).

Interesing post from JMS that got reposted on Bleeding Cool.  He posted the
sales numbers from Amazing Spiderman since his departer after Brand New Day. 
Nice simple chart that shows the title falling consistently in terms of sales
since then.  I'm curious as to what the 3 spike issues were about since they
seem a bit weird in placement.
The current editor of Spiderman from Marvel responded in a very negative manner
while also not really disputing the graph.  JMS responded to that with the fact
he just posted the graph with no editorial comment.

I think that in the end the drop in sales cannot be attributed to one
particular thing, but is likely caused by several factors.  For me it was a
double shot of both JMS no longer writing the story and the reboot caused by
BND.  I tried to stay for a few issues after BND but felt like I was reading
books from the early days of Spiderman, with him running out of money and
webfluid.  I just couldn't relate to that Spiderman any more.  I had grown up,
I'm now married and as such I see different issues in my life and had sort of
seeen Spiderman as a character that I could relate to since he was living a
similar life.  And, from the sales figures it looks like many others stopped
collecting as well, although the reason is up for debates as the graph is just
pure numbers.

It does make me wonder though if JMS had stayed on or if BND had not happened
if things would have been different.

accelerated healing factor.  This was shown in the mini-series ORIGINS and was
also the basis for the opening to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
It was also shown in the X-Men books at one point when Wolverine had all his
adamantium ripped out by Magneto.   He then showed his bone claws in an issue
after that, but his healing factor was then shown to be amped up by the
adamantium, so while still decent it wasn't as good with out the metal in him.
I don't remember which storyline or when he got the adamantium back in him.

Young Justice: no love for this show? the last episode featured the
new/animated incarnation of the Injustice League (Joker, Wotan, POison Ivy,
Black Adam, Ultra-Humanite, Atomic Skull, Count Vertigo), and cameos of
Milestone's Rocket and Icon. And a lot of straightout superhero fighting
without most of the teenage angst.

Downside seems to be the general negative reaction to Brent Spiner as the
Joker, and that the plot doesn't make much sense as far as sending Young
Justice to fight a cadre of heavy-hitter supervillains. Yeah, they're the
undercover team, but after this they won't be anyway. So wouldn't have them
deal with the plants while Superman and Batman and a few other heroes kick butt
make more sense?

 I haven't really notixed the low production values.  But at the end of
the last season of Heroes someone pointed out to me that that season had
a low budget and very little effects-- something I hadn't noticed until
the season was over.

 I only really care about a lack of effects when I feel they should be
there.  Like the Sylar-Peter battles in Heroes, they should be amazing.
Even if you don't have the budget for effects, you can still write and
choreograph something instead of having it happen behind closed doors.

 But Alphas have very subtle powers.  Which is good for long-term story
growth.  If your telekinetic can toss cars around, he's over-powered.
If he can only provide 50 pounds of force anywhere he can look, he's
still pretty powerful, unless your writers are idiots.

strength; it forces the writers to focus on the story first, and it also makes
it much more "accessible" by viewers who are turned off by costumed vigilantes.
It works almost like a reverse X-Files (monsters of the week investigating
normal people).

In fairness, if you don't like low production values in superheroes, you
probably don't like:

Batman (jumps around and punches people)
Spider-Man (jumps around, punches people, and spray silly string)
Captain America (jumps around, punches people, and throws a piece of metal)
Wolverine (jumps around, has claws, stabs people)
Daredevil (jumps around, punches people, hears real well)
Professor Xavier (looks at people and they do what he wants, he says he can
hear what they're thinking)
Aquaman (swims around, punches people)
Hawkeye (shoots arrows0
Black widow (jumps around, kicks people)

Other than having a base of operations, the Alphas film on plenty of different
sets, including a lot of outdoors/psuedo-New York locations. As much as any
other "high-budget" procedural.

Alphas is an investigative team and their powers are designed accordingly. Even
the two fighter types have investigative skills and their powers are secondary.

Besides the problem with higher-budget superhero TV shows is then the budget
runs outs and it looks like a lower-budget show anyway. Heroes had two big
fights between Sylar and Peter, with each of them possessing dozens of powers,
and it usually boiled down to them throwing blue and red energy at each other,
or it being entirely off-camera with some flashes of light thrown in.

Now, maybe they designed Alphas with a concept to match a lower budget, but for
what they intend to do, the funding that they have does what it needs to do to
tell the stories they want to tell.

they do for accounting purposes. I'm not sure if they're doing a one-off, for
Christmas or otherwise. Haven, Eureka, and Warehouse 13 all are, to make up
their complete 13-episode contract.

Alphas is essentially a "home base" procedural. It certainly doesn't have the
international scope of Heroes. It's a "team" show as well, without hauling in
the dozens of sub-characters that Heroes did, even in its first season. You got
the six main characters, a few recurrings (four that have appeared in more than
two episodes, I think), and that's about it.

the Atlantians and is more interested in the surface world. I think Mera is his

Alphas: You'd probably like it, yes. Depends on what you like. Certainly the

I picked up Aquaman number 1, which I got based purely on Geoff Johns is the
writter.  It was pretty amusing actually and looks like it's going to address
the fact that Aquaman has been the butt of a lot of jokes.  Like he shows up at
a restaurant and orders fish and chips.  The dude behind him turns around and
tells Aquaman not to eat fish.  "Why not?" "Because you talk to fish." "Uh, no
I don't, fish brains are too primitive for conversation."

I didn't get the sense that Anna's faction was "peaceful"; only that they
wanted to go open as a terrorist group (a la Al Queda).  Stanton Parish OTOH
wanted to keep Alphas as a secret from general society, since it made things
much easier for Red Flag.  That actually jives within the confies of the show
(since Stanton has been alive for so long, but Alphas as identified by the
government is a much more recent phenomena).  I also don't think that Griffin
was actually hired by Stanton; I think it's another faction or group (within or
not within Red Flag) that actually wanted the Spiner character alive. 
Remember, she was supposed to just take him and his drug formula.  The only
people we've seen so far that are part of the Stanton Red Flag were the shape
shifting guy, Doc's daughter, the assassin, Spiner, and the assassin's shooter.

Well, Brent Spiner's character hinted that he could give Rosen powers, although
that wouldn't make him latent. Of course, right now we don't know if the
current Alphas are latent, either. Not if Parrish has been working behind the
scenes for over a hundred years.

The Red Flag thing is still a bit confusing, though. Anna was originally
working with the two terrorists who wanted to blow up a pharmaceutical facotry.
But in the finale she was apparently a big "peaceful approach" advocate. Griffn
Griffin (the invisible-ish woman, and the name a cute nod to H.G. Wells) was
working for Parrish and trying to kill Spiner's character. So... he wasn't on
Parrish's side of Red Flag?

Actually, I really liked the usage of immortality as the Alpha power of Stanton
Phillips.  In the context of the show, it makes perfect sense (since everybody
who is an Alpha is really low powered).  I also liked the twist with the
Doctor's daughter being with Red Flag as well.  For a second there, I actually
thought that Stanton was going to reveal that the Doctor was a latent Alpha
(since they did a really nice job of tying in how heredity factors in the
creation of Alphas throughout the 2nd half of the season).  I was a little mad
at myself for not figuring out that the daughter was w/ Red Flag; everything
about how the meeting was passed through was a little too smooth.  I also liked
that they didn't show who actually shot the assassin Alpha in the hotel
hallway; for a second, I thought it was Hicks due to the crew cut.  I'm sure
they'll show the counter assassin guy in Red Flag in the next season.

All in all, it's pretty clear that the writers of Alphas have put some thought
into the series.  Maybe the lack of budget for special effects and the hokey
Alphas combat (most evident in the Usual Suspects episode) is forcing the show
writes to *gasp* write good content.

Well, the entire line of #1 issues will be collected in a hardcover form, so
probably about 2 months or so before seeing that (giving about a month to
release all 52 issues).   As for individual storylines you are probably looking
at closer to 6+ months since they will be collecting storyline runs.  I'm sure
that within a month they will have the Flashpoint stuff in TPB or hardcover
also.

It's a bit different than Zero Hour in that they really did got to some length
to create a new time line and history and to make sure that everything syncs
up. This is what should have been done after Crisis on Infinite Earths, so it's
a step in the right direction for reboots. I'm still waiting to see how well it
will work for DC. I'm liking a lot of what I'm seeing, but week two was much
rockier than week one, so I'm worried about the reception from non-DC people
who are curious.

Basically, they re-booted everything, but are saying that they haven't. So
while, technically, Green Lantern and Batman haven't been re-booted, they have,
as characters they knew and worked with have been re-booted, thus making their
history at least slightly different. Some people got the minimal re-boots
(Batman and Green Lantern; who were the two best sellers) while others got
almost a complete re-vamp (Superman and Wonder Woman). Wildstorm was merged
into the DCU and a lot of older characters have been brought back to attention.
Also looks like all the golden age characters have been relegated back to their
respective earths.

Totally disagree.   To me, there are MORE than enough heroes that are "flawed"
and "human."  Superman was the sumbol of being above that, in my opinion.


I know Superman wasn't always that way, but that is what the character has come
to be at its core.  Batman once used a gun, but I'd be just as annoyed if the
new Batman was a gun weilding crime fighter.

And really, aside from that, the story itself really just wasn't well paced or
interesting.  My SO was going to buy all of the new 52 issues for the
characters he liked, and he's not a comic reader.  This issue made him go
"maybe not" which makes me sad, because then it means I wont get to read them
for free. :-(

Action #1> I have to agree with liking the new Superman.  Remember, Superman
wasn't always so altruistic.  Also, this is a new, updated version.  It's nice
to see a Superman that isn't 100% boy scout and that has more human flaws than
the one that's been around for ever since most of us can remember.
