Awake: The pilot/premiere of this is on nbc.com/awake. If you like that kind of
thing, I'd advise giving it a view.

It doesn't seem to be, or is aiming to be, a science fiction/fantasy concept.
Other then the idea that you're basically watching a guy's mental delusinos
play out on your TV screen. I get the impression that they're going to give us
indisputable proof that both realities must be real, but (I think) they've only
so far shown that the, um... Evans-Rex-Bird reality must be the real one (since
Michael read the Constitution when he hadn't memorized it by heart, meaning he
couldn't have been able to read it in a dream. I don't think that they did
anything yet to confirm that the Lee-Hannah-Vega reality must be true.

You really need a flow chart to keep track of which reality is which. I suppose
you could call them realities Red-for-Hannah and Green-for-Rex.

So yeah, once they show that Red reality is also true, it might turn into
something more science-fictiony. For now, it's kinda cute watching both
psychologists argue that the other one is a figment of Michael's imagination.

I've enjoyed this season of Fringe, but I gave it up for a bit in the 2nd
season. The weirdity-of-the-week-explained-by-bad-science was just too much bad
science. The further away from science they get, the more I like it.

What they should do is have it pair up with Syfy and share the costs.  Since
it's owned by the same parent company, have it air first runs on NBC and then
air longer, directors cut episodes on NBC (sorry, meant 1st runs on Syfy.)  Get
the geeks to watch it on Syfy to help with ratings there, then the general
public on NBC, and get some of the geeks to tune back in there to see the
extended episode.

Grimm: Has improved somewhat, and I thought last week's Organ Grinder was the
best of the season so far. Then again, they kicked up the gross-out factor a
bit. And the Eddie bludbat character is usually there to make sure things
aren't too serious.

I found this show laughably bad and couldn't get past the first two episodes. 
It was taking itself WAAAAY to seriously (could have learned a lesson from
Supernatural) while at the same time having terrible effects and acting, and an
overall unappealing sense of timing and dialogue.

However, Grimm is up on Hulu first, the next Saturday morning by about 6 a.m.
central. So I'll tape the other two and catch Grimm on Hulu.

I like the inside jokes, figurative winking toward the camera that they'll do

wrong guess as to the diagnosis until the time it was lupus and House said,
"And we FINALLY have a case of lupus" or some such thing. Or how in this season
every patient has had vomiting/defecating/pissing blood as a symptom.

House: it's a lot more non-formulaic than that. The woman who dies isn't
House's patient. The "patient" is actually the guy who caused the train
accident which caused the collapse which trapped the woman that House is trying
to help simply as extra emergency personnel. He basically has to sit there and
advise her to let them amputate her leg despite the fact she doesn't want to
lose it, the same thing that he went through. She then died of an embolism
caused by a clot from the amputation, but the death isn't the "mystery" of the
episode. In fact, the mystery involving the train engineer's illness is pretty
much irrelevant to the story.

the elements of the character. He doesn't _care_ if the patient lives or dies.
House is concerned with solving the mystery. If he can figure out why you're
dying but realizes there's no cure, then he shrugs his shoulders and moves onto
the next case. He doesn't angst about the fact that he lost a patient.

On th eother hand, in a recent episode he became obsessed with a kid who died a
couple of years previously, and put his parole at risk to try and solve the
mystery. It did eventually turn out that it was a genetic disorder and solving
the case allowed him to keep the mother's other son from dying. But he didn't
find that out until late in the game.

House: Look at it like music. If you have a song that is widespread enough to
have different versions and covers, are they interchangeable? Or do you have
one that you like more than another? If so, why? They all follow the same
formula, have the same words and/or melody, run about the same length of time.

Or even the same artist performing the same song. Go out on Youtube and do a
earch for Billy Joel's Piano Man sometime. Each one he does is a different
variation, even though the song itself is formulaic.

While I wouldn't suggests that all TV programming is or should be that way,
when you have a show that's either built around a strong central actor (a Hugh
Laurie or a Peter Falk), or a strong central concept (Mission Impossible or
Perry Mason), the trick is to ignore the formula and watch the performance, or
the execution, respectively. Or sometimes both, as with Columbo, where you're
watching both the character and the writer's execution of the mystery.

Columbo is formulaic. Mission Impossible is formulaic. Sometimes they play with
the formula (just as House did), but you get a formula and stick with it.

Most mystery fiction and TV programming is formulaic, and House is at its heart
a mystery. When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote Sherlock Holmes, most of the short
stories follow the same formula.

To paraphrase Mark Dawidziak in his Columbo companion book, you don't tune in
to watch the theme. You tune in to see what variation the conductor is going to
do with that theme. Hugh Laurie could always find something new/different to do
with the character. Purportedly, he's going to retire from television now,
possibly to write more books.

The dramatic part at the beginning where someone would fall ill.  They'd get
the first diagnosis and, even as a non-medical person, I would be saying "not
it!"  Not because I knew what it was but rather that we don't find out the real

just with different actors, symptoms, etc.  I liked some of the humor and

While there were some missteps along the way (the House/Cuddy get-together
never worked), some of the early stuff tends to be a bit overrated. I never
found their "guest star" arcs very satisfying (Sela Word, Chi McBridge, David
Morse). With the exception of the cast and a few specific plot elements, you
could put show an episode without season identifiers, and most people would be
hardput to tell if it was an early or later episode.

Of course, maybe that's what people have a problem with, that a procedural show
does the same procedure (almost) each week?

a fan of Sarah reverting to her 5-years-ago persona. I would have preferred it
if they'd taken some other path than the "Sarah forgets Chuck" storyline. I
basically didn't like the way the last 3 episodes went, but they ended up
wrapping it up in a *mostly* satisfying way, again, given the final story arc.
I would have prefered a scenario where Chuck and Sarah "Ride off into the
sunset" so to speak, like you said, leaving the spy world to run Charmichael
Industries and start a family.

So I didn't hate the ending, but I wasn't necessarily a fan of it either.

Mostly I hated the sarah forgets chuck bit... most of the rest was good, but
especially given they knew from the start this was a final season the fact we
went from "sarah and chuck are finally happy, intersect free, and getting out
of spying entirely to raise a family" to "Sarah barely knows who chuck is and
Chuck is the (one and only) intersect again" in 3 episodes, and it ended that
way, felt horrible and clunky.

Sweeps: Seems to become less and less relevant, as cable networks ignore the
"designated" sweeps periods, and the regular networks have changed to follow.
TNT runs stuff through December and January (Leverage had its season finale two
weeks ago), Supernatural started up the week after New Year (and ran two
episodes and then went into repeats, and then back to new episodes this week),
Once Upon a Time and Grimm ran uninterrupted due to late starts and only took a
brief break around the holidays, and Fringe appears to be airing through
January and into february to catch up for the episode cut off by the World
Series going to the seventh game.

By the same token, it looks like a lot of series will start their new episodes
now and show them in an uninterrupted block through May. Making it pretty much
one big "sweep" from February through May. Some of this appears to be due to
longer hiatus, as many shows aren't even halfway through their season, or have
just reached the halfway point. Once Upon a Time tonight, for instance, ran its
11th episode and has 11 more to go. They'll have to run new episodes almost
every week to wrap up by May. Ditto for Fringe, and Grimm, and so on.

This means all your favorite shows should air new episodes for most of the next
4 weeks.  While this period is primarily for local broadcast television
stations, cable networks have been competiting with new programming during
these periods more in recent years.

This means tomorrow (Monday), your local brodcast stations will probably start
promoting their "special investigative reports" and contests that will begin on
Thursday.  Watch and win and "secret word" contests are common during this
time.

Network news magazines like "60 Minutes" often save their best reports for
sweeps periods.

So, this would be a good time to not skip the commercials, or you might miss
out on something special that you would have wanted to see.

Normally, this sweeps period would have begun last Thursday, but it was moved
to get the Super Bowl outside of a sweeps period.  Then the Super Bowl was
moved a week later to be inside the sweeps period.  If it was 1986, the Super
Bowl would have been today and tomorrow the Space Shuttle Challenger will blow
up.

Interestingly, my local newspaper has chosen this Thursday to premier their new
on-line presence.  I wonder if they are trying to counter program TV?

the characters are interesting (the young girl the least interesting, but

sarah conner:  canceled way too early.  better than terminator salvation, but
that's almost weak praise.  i have no idea how it failed, really.  if you
were really looking for a direct sequel to T2, the sarah connor chronicles
was a dream come true.  it was establishing a pretty good lore and laying the
groundwork for several seasons of conflict, having introduced a possible
rival AI to fight Skynet in alliance with humans.

I didn't get the chance to watch all of it, but from the last half an hour that
I did watch, here's what I thought:

- I loved the proposal set-up for Will and Emma, especially with the 50's
swimming theme to Rihanna's "We Found Love."
- I found it interesting that they gave Becky a British voice. It was great to
see an ep from her perspective on life for once.
- I did find that the proposal from Finn to Rachel was weak and a not-needed
part of the story line; however, probably great for the Finn/Rachel OTP
finatics out there.

A lot of surprises in store; however, 2 weeks until the next episode though.

We found Person of Interest to be way too over the top for our liking.  If you
can successfully suspend your disbelief while our super hero like main
character kills people on a crowded street without notice, dodges a hale of

Person of Interest: I wouldn't call it an incredibly thrilling or new concept.
It's basically The Equalizer with a modern setting and more high-tech.  Still,
Caviezel and Emerson make an amusing odd couple, they throw in a plot twist or
two, and the emeging backstory of the Machine, what happened to Finch's
partnership with Ingram (which presumably lead to the limp he has in the
present), and the overall performances are good. You've got Caviezel as a
hard-ass who isn't reluctant to kneecap a bad guy or blast open their door with
a grenade launcher.

Very few shows, if any, use a laugh track these days. I once heard a technical
guy explain that they're pretty much impossible to work with, no producer would
choose to use one. Sometimes they show the film to an audience and record
responses rather than filming in front of an audience, but that's still not
'canned' laughter. I've been to live recordings and firstly they warm up the
audience first, so they're in a mood to laugh. They also tell people to laugh,
that's why they're there afterall. Net result is people laugh out loud a LOT
more than you might at home. It can sound a little false, but it's really not.

1) I was very surprised the attack happened _that soon_ into the show, and that
when Jim Shannon was knocked unconcious, there wasn't any more severe penalty
for him when he returned back to the colony; however, his wife did get to him
quickly. With Shannon and the Phoenix Group that came through, it would have
been an interesting subplot if someone came through to take him back to Golad
due to his escape.

2) I have a hunch that Kara is still alive. She kind of was a strong subplot to
have let go this early. I think we will forget about her for a little while
(since we're under the assumption she's dead), and will surprisingly appear
back into the timeline at a later time. Although, with Kara out of the picture,
we could see some more chemistry develop between Josh and Skye.

3) With the wooden figurehead of the ship the Phoenix Group found, it is now
appearant that they are not the first humans to discover Terra Nova, and that
humans were there once before (or are presently there now somewhere). It would
be interesting to see if the Terra Novans and Sixers formed some sort of
alliance against these "Others" if they are hostile.

Local media reports have it pegged as a calibration error for the initial
cause.

What they're saying is that the secondary crew was testing a cannon at the
Alameda County Bomb Disposal Range (which the show has used many times before).
It was done with the blessing of county officials. According to the San
Francisco Chronicle, the show doesn't pay for use of the range directly,
however it does make regular donations to the county.

Today's follow-up story said that the two stars, Adam and Jamie (who weren't
present at the range), visited the damaged neighborhood yesterday and
personally apologized. They said the cannon, which was supposed to be firing
into a water barrel and brick wall backstop, suffered from "muzzle lift" and
the resulting shot fired out of the range.

No charges have been filed so far because all initial reports seem to indicate
that proper procedure was followed and it appears to be nothing more than an
accident.

When Jax told Tara that he had to stay, and she should take the boys to Oregon,
when he walked out, what did she say when crying? My dvr audio dropped out.
I am hoping Tig stays, he is one of my favorite characters, as is Chibs. I
loved the sex doll scene earlier in the season when Bobby asked him is he was
ok, while he felt the doll up. "Terrified! And, fully erect." (if you do not
remember, he has an extreme fear of dolls.)
I also hope Opie comes back, he is one of my favorite actors in the show. Hard
to believe he was Sgt. Savage in We Were Soldiers.

CBS Early Show> Supposedly it's going to be more hard news and less fluff as
compared to the morning shows on NBC and ABC.

I think it's a great move. I don't watch any of the morning shows (Today show
fora  few minutes at a time once in a while, I guess) but if I were CBS I'd be
"why not?". They're getting crushed doing the same stuff the other networks are
doing. At worst they tried something new and it fails. At best, they fill a
niche that maybe some people didn't realize they wanted and they're successful.
And perhaps when Lauer leaves NBC when his contract runs out, and the general
consensus seems to be that he will, it'll move some of those viewers over to
CBS.

them.  They do have appendices at the end who explains who everyone
was around the start of the book, if you really really want to skip
book one.

while ago about if they would break the two books up differently for TV, as not
showing things in chronological order would likely confuse most TV series

I just figured it to be two part, the issue of the CIA lady sleeping with
Brody. One, she is doing anything she can to get info. She saw how strained it
was for him at home. Also, the mental instability thing. She may not have
wanted to get close, but did anyhow.

Now, some questions from the last epi. When Brody was rescued, he had many
years of hair growth. In the last epi, before he was cleaned up, that is was he
looked like getting rescued. If that part was 3 years ago, he had 5 years to

the office:  i think there's a secret to the show, and it's that the office
is a place many Americans spend huge parts of their lives, and that the
office serves as a fine stage to keep delivering human stories, period.  the
office can change bosses, it can bring in new workers, but it remains the
office.  if it moves organically, it may very well be a different show in the
eighth season than it was in its second.  guess what?  life eight years ago
was different for most of us too.

nbc has kind of been the master of this "hub" comedy, having given us
"cheers" in the past, and currently serving up community and parks and rec
(parks and rec has wisely utilized the entire town of pawnee and its
political system), 30 rock (a brilliant show that i hardly watch anymore),
etc.

incidentally, whitney is doing well because studio audience comedies almost
feel daring now that post-modern laugh-track-free docu-comedies are so
prevalent.  don't worry, i heard the star of grace under fire, brett butler,
is a homeless addict now, so just imagine Whitney bumping up against her in
the soup kitchen for a reprise of "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?"

Parks and Rec> Agree on this one. Quality show that IMO is better at being "The
Office" than the "The Office" is this season.

The Office is still worth watching for the funny lines, but I feel the opposite
of FCT in that I think the cast is just too damn big. Not enough screen
time/good lines to go around. I do agree about Robert California, though. More
often than not it seems like he's just inserted into the episode for no reason.

well, we still get a lot of pleasure out of the office, they've handled the
post steve carell transition impressively, even though i don't think they
know what to do with robert california sometimes.  they were right in
understanding that they had a huge, high quality ensemble to work with, and
in fact i'd say they need to use more of it.  i'm seeing tons of daryl and
kevin, whereas angela, phyllis, creed, etc. often go missing.


if community is the only nbc sitcom you're watching, you're missing out on
parks and recreation, which has been in the zone ever since season two and
continues to surprise with its wit and inventiveness.  not as completely out
there as community, certainly, but very dense with subtle comedic touches.
blink and you'll miss killer lines that sometimes don't even hit you until
later.

I've never watched this show and know nothing about it.  However, sweeps ends
tomorrow, so don't be surprised if some "good" shows disappear from now until
the beginning of February sweeps (last Thursday in January, normally).

Also, the end of sweeps means the beginning of another PBS pledge drive, so get
out your money if you watch a PBS station, which according to Homer Simpsons is
so very unnecessary (kinda of surprising jab at liberals).  It appears our
(West Michigan) PBS station begins its on-air pledge drive at 10 a.m. Saturday.
This means much of the regular PBS programming will be pre-empted for the next
few weeks with the kind of shows people who donate like, which is apparently a
lot of musical performances, the kind senior citizens like.

Community - usually there's two or three eps that just transend the other eps,
and a lot of other comedy shows (imo,duh). Like the trampoline ep and the tent
ep, along with the "claymation" ep.      ^I mean two or three eps in a season

As for Community, it's one of the weirdest over-the-air broadcast network shows
I've ever seen. I don't mean that in a bad way. I enjoy it, think it's really
clever, sometimes too clever to the point of being really out there IMO. It's
like the show belongs on cable with a cult following rather than on NBC
Thursday night.
