I was asking a similar question about five or so years ago, JXL, and came here
for advice--I was asking for best records, rather than single artists, since
jazz is so album-oriented (it seems to me) and playing careers are so long that
they can change drastically and possibly right out of a phase you liked (though
I don't think I understood this at the time fully).

I got a lot of great answers in here for top albums, and have downloaded a
whole lot of them, but the two that have stuck with me most--that I can put on
whatever mood I'm in and really enjoy--are Miles Davis and John Coltrane. And
if I had to pick one, especialy as sort of an introductory piece, it'd be John
Coltrane, because Davis can be Really Weird sometimes.

Not that I don't like the Weird, but it takes getting used to. With Coltrane,
I felt I could jump right in.

I figured it was the Ribs part that would be too expensive in this economic
climate.

Kansas City's Rhythm & Ribs festival is canceled for 2009
http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/2009/04/20/daily12.html

"The tough economy has claimed another victim: Organizers of Kansas City's
Rhythm & Ribs blues and jazz festival canceled the event for 2009, citing
difficulty raising money.

The event had been planned for June 19-20. Organizers plan to resume the
festival during Father's Day weekend next year. The annual festival started in
2005.

Peter Yelorda, the festival's chairman, said Monday that the festival costs
more than $300,000.

'We probably needed another $160,000 to get the level of entertainment we
wanted, and production costs,' he said.

Entertainment alone for the festival costs $225,000 to $250,000, he said.

'We didn't want to have a festival that was less than we produced in the past,'
Yelorda said. 'A lot of our sponsors could only come in this year at a third of
what they'd done in the past, and a lot of them couldn't come in at all.'"

The diatonic harmonica is much better for blues than the chromatic. You just
have to learn second position (or "cross harp") to play it right. You have to
learn much more than that to play well, but basically you're playing a C
harmonica in the key of G. Without getting into too much theory, the G blues
scale (with bent notes - something else you have to learn) is on the 1-6 holes
of the C harp, and the bent notes are on the draws. It's too late for me to
post much more, but do some web searches on blues harmonica lessons.

Adam Gussow (kudzurunner) has tons of great YouTube lessons, and so do others.
I wish I had YouTube over 20 years ago when I first started playing!

If you haven't heard about it, it's a movie
based on the Chess Records story, and artists like Muddy Waters, Little Walter,
Chuck Berry, Etta James, Howlin' Wolf, etc. From what I've read, it's
entertaining but inaccurate (like all biopics), and the music in it is great.
