I don't care much for extra-large companies, but I don't consider 5-6% profits
way out of line. There are plenty of large companies that make considerably
more %-wise yet no one complains about them. It is just fashionable to vent on
"big oil" because prices are high, and so the % yields larger dollars.

No, I have no vested interest or investments in any oil companies afaik.
Further mergers I would agree are probably not in the consumer's best interest.

Something like 8 or 9 maybe. The recent Mac OSX revisions (past several years)
have been pretty stable. Haven't heard complaints. So, it would seem the merger
was successful.

Do people really feel that Oracle + Sun has been bad. I know it isn't exactly
good for open source, but these corporations will always work in the dark
against open source. I think the Oracle+Sun=bad for open source is too obvious
.... I wouldn't really say Java is the way of the future. Its way too slow for
people to pragmatically use it exclusively... Even C# is better, and I'm not a
huge fan of C#... Java apps are slow and use hundreds of times more memory than
they need too... So, my conclusion, Oracle snapping an unprofitable company
with good technology up is not as bad as people think.

continued development and decent hardware to run on, and Apple got good
software to replace the shitastic pile of shit known as Mac OS.

* Bank mergers in general. It led to greed, a collapse, and taxpayer-funded
government bailouts.

* The gradual, ongoing rebuilding of Ma Bell which is making the industry
once again customer-hostile by eliminating competition

* Chrysler + Mercedes (what were they thinking?)

* Ford + Volvo (again, what were they thinking?)

* Ford + Jaguar (okay, that one didn't suck, since Ford quality actually
  improved Jaguar's reliability and electrical woes)

* Oracle + Sun (Oracle's failing quest to destroy open source)

cherry picked the pieces they wanted and let the rest pass into history.  Still
wonder how things would have evolved differently in the industry if DEC could
have marketed itself out of a paper bag.  Would we all be running OpenVMS now

vine before Jobs came in, and now they're a power house.  Unclear as to the

Time Warner + AOL is probably the worst that I can think of, off hand.  I do
believe that Microsoft + Skype would eclipse that though.

eBay sold Skype a couple of years ago for less than 3 billion.  Google is
in a prime position, with their recent acquisitions, to put up a formidable
competitor to Skype when they are ready.  Microsoft buying Skype would signal,
yet again, that they've lost the ability to get new technologies out of their
own development teams.  That's not a terrible thing if you can go buy it
cheaper than doing it yourself, but I cannot imagine that Microsoft could not
do this themselves for less than 7 billion dollars.

Skype users have no allegiance to Skype.  Switching a voice service is no
harder than switching chat clients.

that saves lots of lives, I was surprised to find that pacemakers - even
implantable ones - have now been around for more than 50 years.  Dialysis
machines have been around since the 1940s.

How about X-ray computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI)?  Those only date to the late 1960s or 1970s, and have made it a
whole lot easier to see what's going on inside the body without, or at
least before, cutting someone open. ;)
