I havent tried it but it looks like FireFox works still with the "remote"
command like netscape (which is the default in the client) does. You probably
need to see if there is and what is the equivalent command for cromium.

Xenos

The goal was to copy the executable file you downloaded to a easy to
remember name (bbs) and a location that would be accessible anywhere
(i.e. in your "path", so no matter where you were, you could run it).
Since your mac doesn't have /usr/local/bin, putting it there won't
achieve the second goal, so it is rather pointless (we could instruct
you on how to modify your path, but i'm not sure that's worth it).
Sounds like /usr/bin isn't a great idea either.
./bbs is probably just fine in your current user directory, so if
you're ok with that, leave it there.

Nope I can't copy paste into the terminal window I'm currently using, it
doesn't allow it. But I can tell you what's there. This is after cd-ing to
Downloads and typing ls:
About Downloads.lpdf
install_flash_player.osx-2.dmg
mac_os_10.6-2.3.8.dmg.bin
mac_os_10.6-2.3.8.dmg.bin.cpgz

plus some other stuff I've downloaded that I doubt is relevant :-)

Hm, well I've tried that but I keep getting a "no such file or directory"
error. The client file is in Downloads, I can see it if I type ls. The
problem seems to be in copying it using cp. When you say /usr/local etc you
mean literally exactly that wording? (Not, for example, changing usr to my
name or something?) I can't cd to /usr/local either, although I can navigate
to that folder by using cd ..

It's the binary itself.

OK, here's what you do. Assuming it downloaded to your Downloads folder, you
open up a Terminal and do:

cp Downloads/mac_os_10.6-2.3.8.dmg.bin /usr/local/bin/bbs

chmod +x /usr/local/bin/bbs

after that you can run "bbs" in the terminal.

We just got a new modem from our ISP. Worked fine for a couple of days. But
over the last few days, everytime the computer is shut down when it is
restartd the computer can't tell it has an internet connection. Shutting it
down again doesn't help, but after 20-30 minutes of being idle, suddenly it
finds its internet connection without me having to do anything else.

I called the ISP and they said it sounds like my router neesd to be "reset". I
asked if just unplugging it and replugging it would work and he said it should.
So, it does work...until I shot the computer down again and then I have to
unplug and replug the router.

Am I missing something obvious, like a connection to/from the router that will
make this work properly? Or is it the fault of the new modem? Or is the router
I have (three years old) perhaps not entirely compatible with the new modem?

Rick Jenkins

There's an INet or Intel forum that would be more appropriate.

Yes, unplugging it and replugging it would reset it, but i highly doubt
you want to do that every time you restart your computer.

Vlad Tepes

There might be a setting in your router to avoid that: idle timeout
or some such. old linksys routers had the setting but did nothing (grr).

I use PuTTY to connect to a remote unix machine and set PuTTY to "keep
alive" so i don't get dropped. Then run the unix client from the remote
session.

Maybe if Roady .. opened the source of his client, we could add a keep
alive feature...

That said, I wonder how hard it would be to simply bundle the bbs binary in
with an icon and a shell invocation wrapper so folks with command line paranoia
don't need to subject themselves to the Big Scary?

Whistler

I'd say that it is not related to having 2 clients installed.
What you are describing sounds like a video driver issue or a over heating
problem. See if there is a new video driver (you're updating your
machine, yes?). Also make sure your machine is getting good ventilation,
maybe blow some air in their to get rid of any buildup that might be
clogging things.

although now for some reason every time I open my Terminal application it
messed up my computer and forces it to shut down. First the screen goes
kerblooey and looks like bar-codes scrambling all over the place..... so a word
of warning to mac users: be VERY careful about what you do in the Terminal
program, and I suspect that my issue is related to the fact that I installed
two client programs (the password save version and the non-password version)

ok, I've been looking through the info and maybe I missed it but I can't find
the information on how to update the Mac client. I've got the old version
(2.3.8) installed and config'd, but it (obviously) won't open the connection
with the old address in there. I downloaded the source code for the new one,
but can't seem to figure out how to put the new address code into the old
client..... anyone know how to do this? When I search for the /usr directory
on my mac I can find it in the unix shell, but not in the GUI even with
invisible files visible. Therefore I can't locate the client file to open it
and change the code for the address......
