Forums that encourage hate tend to attract people who like to spew hate in my
experience, rather than keeping it cordoned off.

I certainly wouldn't shed a tear if it got nuked.  I checked it out *once* and
then zapped it after about 5 messages.

Heh, there's at least one user who engaged in active trolling against another
particular user on quite a lot of forums, even going on a trolltastic post
about STDs and tech stuff. That kind of behavior might increase if there were
no Ambush> forum.

I did find it funny that the kind of activity I mentioned would usually trigger
some kind of Sysop action, precisely because it would be flaming outside of
Rages/Ambush> and thus would violate any other non-Rages/Ambush FI, resulting
in KO's. Enough KO's could trigger Sysop action.

.... instead, it seems this goes largely unchecked; though it seems the Ops do
take action when things really get out of control. There has been a recent
TWIT.

and it seems sparsely used by a handful of people who mostly call each other
TEH GHEY.

In an era where our population is dwindling and we seek to separate ourselves
from the rest of the internet by emphasizing the relative maturity and
sophistication of our use base and that we moderate content, a room like
Ambush> seems out of place.

There is plenty of snark and hostility elsewhere, regardless, and if anything,
our lax approach to FM'ing allows more of it to stand that would have
historically been tolerated, meaning Ambush> is used only for out-and-out
flames, which, as I said, consist almost entirely calling people fags.

If people want it, fine, it just seems anachronistic, unnecessary, and
counterproductive.

immature userbase. Ambush> was created ... what, almost a decade ago? The
makeup of the BBS has mellowed and matured a lot over the years. And, I don't
think it's unreasonable to ask a uswerbase that is 99% adult to, well, act like
adults.

I'm not opposed to keeping it since, as is pointed out, it is active, and we're
not short of forums, but I just don't see a need to keep it either.

Well, with half of that.  I agree with the first half.  But I don't think we
should get rid of it.  When Rages> was whacked, and there was no outlet for the
usual suspects, it was noticable in other forums.  Ambush> at least keeps it in
one spot, where it's 100% avoidable if you don't want to see it.  And, sadly,
it's a fairly active forum.  I personally don't think we should delete any
active forum.

Of the legit forums that from list for the general audience to
discuss things:

 - You'll need to tie it into Policy to take it to Policy>, and
   Tanj is on pretty frequently so you can't hope to escape this.
   If it's not directly policy this won't work.

 - you'll be kicked out of Admin Issues> if it's not a "current
   issue," but that won't happen until Devil Lady logs in again to
   notice, so you'll have a good while to talk about things here.
   Make sure to enemy-list people saying every other post "so Yell> to
   the Sysops already" and this will work for a good while.

 - Coding> would only work for coding changes, but you can probably
   discuss other things here if you can just barely keep it
   tangentially related.

 - Future> seems to tolerate quite a lot of stuff.  Go for it.

I'm open to the idea that ISCA has clamped down on talking about ISCA,

What are the thoughts of the group on the idea of a forum I'll call "Union
Hall"...blackhole forum, no admittance to any powers or authority figures...FM
would be a person voted on by those non-administrative types in the room.  This
would be a "safe place" for non-administrative types to gripe, bitch,
whatever about the NPO, sysops, etc. with no fear of retaliation.  While it may
turn into an absolute waste, would be an intersting concept to test.  Another

There're are also social networking games to think about (Farmville etc).  They
turn up in Social Networking> quite a lot, but are a bit boarderline in there
and I always feel they're a distraction from the spirit of the topic (not that
I'd ever delete or anything).

Perhaps there is an argument for actually creating more forums in this case?
There seems to be enough scroll around to justify it.

Most games would cross, especially because the current gen of consoles finally
entered the 1990's and added online play as a main feature. Even MMOs are
crossing over to the console arena, IIRC DCUO is one MMO that has done this.
MMOs as a genre do stand out as their own category, ecause unlike other games,
the "game" is always running, independently of who's on or not. This they share
with MUDs, and thus are pretty OK having their own forum.

Agreed that it has been a couple of years since the MUDs began to die and/or
get empty. A good indication of this is the fact that nobody cares anymore
about Medievia donations (remember that?) and that most of the once-flooded
MUDs are now hardly getting 100 online players.

I tend to agree that there is too much if you combine everything into one
forum, and there's really no pressing need for forum space.  Video Games> has
run well for years.  That said, there may be a different way to split the
traffic and keep it manageable, I'm not sure that Online versus PC Console etc.
is it though, there would still be things that cross both lines.

I don't have a different answer though.

muds were fine in VGAP until Armageddon, and that's when the mudding/vgap split
happened.  Then when Armageddon folks got their own forum it could have been
merged since that traffic died, but it didn't.  Then WoW took over mudding,
hence the change to add MMORPGs.

Personally I think either re-merging them all back within VGAP would be fine,
or like Lochner suggested, having an all-inclusive multiplayer game forum and
then a forum for more single-game focus
