for some time. There was one on the strip by Old Chicago, but it is a Gyro or
pita place now. North Liberty also used to have one, but I tihnk that one has

MLI is almost always cheaper than CID, no matter where you're going.  If I have
to fly to Phoenix, I travel east first.  It's crazy.  Connections are often
better, too, as fewer airlines fly through CID.  AirTran or whatever they're
called this year offers the cheapest flights south, but they don't fly through
Cedar Rapids.  Or didn't last I checked.

Chloe was born October 2010 and is just under 10 months old - she is a Jack
Russell, Beagle, and Mini Schnauzer mix. She comes with a leash, Iams puppy
food, bowls, treats. She's very energetic and knows a few commands like sit and
speak. She needs a family that can play with her a lot and give her good walks.
My MIL has trouble walking and can't help Chloe burn off her energy. If anyone
here knows someone who'd like a new puppy in the Iowa City, Coralville, heck
we'll even take her to Cedar Rapids if needed.

It's a bit too late unless you already have tickets, but the Theater Cedar
Rapids production of Guys and Dolls is absolutely fantastic.  It's amazing,
even judged from the standard of professional theater.  Very neat.
 
And thus begins my every-five-year cycle of going "TCR is great!  I'm going
to go to more shows" followed by, the next time, "this show was so lame;
what was I thinking?"  So you probably want to skip whatever show I go

addresses, or did they use an internal mailing list like 'everyone@uiowa.edu'?

When I read all these posts about the various rules which govern these things,
it sounds like internal University policies.  None of this would mean 'boo' to
someone who wasn't an employee or student, right?  I mean, I could send 10,000
emails right not now to everyone at the U of I and it would just be spam.  They
could block it, but it's not like any of their regulations would be in play,
right?

It was not sent out from a university email address, was more than 20 lines
long, and did not have the right disclaimer at the bottom.
It had a disclaimer, but not the required one for mass emails.
The university email requirement is only for RSOs (I think ISCA had this issue
a few years ago when we wanted to send out a mass email and had to get someone
with a university email to originate it). There also has to be a non-email
contact in the email (phone or address).
Violating the line limit is the glaring one, since the request system makes you
enter the email into a length limited box (20 lines of no more than 70
characters each, with blank lines counting).

was whether mass messages (in this case, sent out by student groups) had to go
through an approval process before they're sent. They do, and yet this one was
still allowed to pass by someone. I'm guessing it barely got a skim before they

Another interesting point about this:  The mass emails are usually rolled out
(sent) in batches to reduce the load on the email system.  In this case, I
think that someone "put a stop to" this email before it was delivered to
everyone at the university--because only about half of the people in our office
received it.  Who received it vs. who didn't receive it doesn't seem to be cut
along student/staff/faculty lines in any way we can figure out.

I wound up sending them a polite (if condescending) email response outlining
the most painful of errors.  They don't seem to understand how to use
apostrophes, those marks being missing for contracted words and for
possessives.  I stated that, as they are an organization affiliated with a
university, it shouldn't be hard or time consuming to find someone well versed
enough in English to proof their emails.  I can't believe that it would have
been approved, given the horror of grammar and syntax in the final draft.

It's the history teacher coming out in me.  I really don't care much what point
they wish to make, as long as they have the evidence to back it up and can
write in a passable imitation of English.

So the Big Issue bunching the panties of University Heights residents is the
purchase of the land where St. Andrews Church is now, up at that five-way where
Sunset runs into Melrose, and how -- or indeed, whether -- it is to be
developed.  If UH doesn't put something there, at least condos but in my
perfect dream world a little bit of commercial & some public space as well, the
spot would undoubtedly be snatched by the university ("Land snatching, land

exist as an independent entity within a few years.

So I hear from my neighbor Harold the Dentally Alarming that the congregation
of St. Andrews is instead kicking around the idea of splitting, one group to

I went to the new brunch at 126 this morning.  Kudos for them for having a
brunch over actual brunch hours, but the rest of it was a big pile of (at
best) meh.  The food was pedestrian at best, and when it was bad (the bloody
mary), it was very, very bad.  Service was on the poor side, and there was
really very little to redeem itself.  Perhaps this is because it was the
first outing for them, but at the end of the day, I would rather have just

Just got back from La Cava again. Finished up my Anejo Flight of Ages, and I
saved the best 3 tequilas for last. Don Eduardo was decent enough. el Mayor was
pretty effin good, but to confirm for myself, Don Julio was tops. Patron, Cabo
etc, essentially crap to my palette. El Jimador was pretty good as well. As was
Cazadora.
Still really good food there. Nothing we have tried has been bad. The other
couple we were with, and my wife tried some more mixed drinks, and liked them
all. To top it off, the owner gave us a free drink. He was talking to us about
hwo they came up with their combos, and he admitted they were drunk. But this
drink was really nice. Good for a hot day. I do not recall everything in it,
but it had avacado and cilantro. we were all skeptical, then we tried it.
The owner also told us that they are going to add another tier to the flight of
ages, one for the really expensive stuff. Just another reason for us to go
back.

thinking that just their presence was abusive, that's insane.
Based on your account, the police did nothing illegal or abusive.
It is their job to watch people to make sure nothing fishy happens.

You can't do anything without the public breathing down your neck, preventing

Thanks for the feedback.  The police review board is a very good
recommendation.  I'm just cautious about these things - the ACLU has a docket
on the abuse of federal anti-terrorism powes to investigate activists, and
there have been two incidents in Iowa that we know about (an anti-terrorism
investigation of peace activists at my alma mater, Drake University, which
briefly produced a gag order on the university, and then the extensive
investigation of the Iowa City peace movement a couple of years ago).  It's
probably nothing but it seems prudent to check up on it a little because of the
similarity to earlier incidents of abuse of police power in Iowa.

I ended up phoning someone at the National Lawyers Guild in Des Moines, one of
the groups that was investigated in the Drake peace protest probe.  They're
lawyers and much more familiar than I am with what is "normal" and what is
abusive for police activities at public gatherings.

You would want police protection there. You never know whena  whack would show
up at an abortion rally and blow some shit up.
But either way, it is being extremely paranoid to assume that the cops were

Is it normal for there to be police presence at small (approx. 15 people)
protests on the Pentacrest?  I was on campus today and noticed two police squad
cars parked on Jefferson St. so that they would be able to see what was going
on with protesters and the protesters would not be able to see them (as they
were facing east).  They stayed the entire time and watched everyone like
hawks, then rolled out 5-10 minutes after the protest was over.  There were no
counterprotesters and everything was completely civil.  As we all know that the
Iowa City police force has been used for FBI surveillance of protest groups, I
am disturbed by possible civil liberties implications and would like to contact
whomever would be most effective - the city police force, the mayor, someone in
the media or the university administration, etc. - but I'm not really sure who
that would be.

Ultimately, other than the dispatching out of a cab, there is not much you can
do about it. You saw the red light violation, but that is not giong to be
enough to get him a moving violation. I won't even get into the basic speed
rule violations; that one would have been thrown out in court if he had been
written up on it as either a basic speed rule or obstructing traffic violation.
But if they were dispatching out of the cab, you can pursue that with Iowa City
and Coralville through each of their respective regulating authorities. You
might not catch them this time, but dispatching out of the cab will eventually
catch up with them.

Last post on the subject. I have not had to waver from my points, as I have
provided evidence that I was correct. He broke the law, as clarified by the
Highway Patrol by driving in the left lane, impeding traffic. (To avoid more
confusion, I will go into great detail here)
After having exited Interstate 380, he go onto Interstate 80, going east. After
going about 1 mile, he exited Interstate 80 east, to Coralridge mall,
Coralville. At the end of the ramp, there sits a traffic control light, which
at the time was red for our direction, and traffic was currently going by. He
slowed down, then pulled out into oncoming traffic, and cut acrossed several
lanes of traffic.
My statement of "If I were in the cab while he was talking on the phone,
cussing someone out, and running red lights, I would have called the police
myself." still stands.
Opposing arguments are all over the board ranging from "The IHP is wrong about
interpretting the laws that they are supposed to enforce" to "If no one was
hurt, why are you bitching?"
Does this not seem crazy? A person paid to drive other people on public roads
is breaking laws, shows he has a "I don't give a fuck" attitude, and threatens
public safely is essentially being defended for what he did by people who are
apathetic, or apparently want to challenge the institution.
And someone actually said that people from IC have to bitch about something. I
am being bitched about over something that appears to anyone else that hears
the story, a valid reason to bitch.
Funny how this went from a request for info on the cab company, and sharing
what I had seen, only so that people around the area can know, and use the info
when deciding who to call if they need a cab. Sadly, I was caught up more than
I wanted. I should not have to defend myself over a simple idea of calling the
police on someone breaking the law, and endangering people.

LPF, I fully understand that cops are not perfect, but when asked what the
interpretation of a traffic law is, since they are the authority, why not take
their word. Just because you do not like it, does not mean they are wrong. I

I have to take the same POST training, PASS exams, and much of the other
credentialing as LEOs. Like I said, ask him what the policy acknowledgement
system directive says for the interpretation of the law he is talking about. I
am pretty sure Iowa State Highway Patrol is CALEA certified, so they have a
policy acknowledgement system.

was the exit ramp to Coral Ridge Mall. At the end of this ramp are stop lights.
So, let me run this down for you so you understand. I went around him about 2
miles before the I-80 east exit. One mile past that ramp to 80 east is exit 240
.. We both took the same exit off of I-380 onto I-80 east. We also both took the

Do you think you can understand all of that? That is twice you asked about a
red light on the interstate, so it appears you do not read for content. If that
is the case, why would I consider any interpretation you have on about
anything? especially over someone whose job it is to enforce the law in
