It spreads out the floor quite a bit, but it just reminds me of how bad Mich
State would have beaten Michigan, when scott skiles was playing in AA, and they
kept yelling alcoholic at him.. He put in ~50 that game without a 3-pt line..
and literally, he came down and shot it from between the top of the arc

The 3 point shot is great.  Those shots for me are a thing of beauty better
than inside shooting.  A team that can't compete on the inside has a chance to
pull off upsets if they hit from 3 pt range.  Makes the game more interesting.

According to wikipedia, the NCAA adopted it in 1986, although the first college
conference (southern conference) adopted it in 1980, and it was tried out in
other conferences before becoming an official NCAA rule.

I love rooting against John Calipari. I love when he bring talented teams to
the tournament and fizzles out. I liek Derrick Rose now, but I loved when they
collapsed after they couldn't make free throws down the stretch, particularly
after he got indignant after he was asked about it.
And I must admit, that I kinda liked that John Channey wanted to kill him,
at least for a moment. (Even if they claim they are good now.)

The team he has now looks scary. If they lose again, I am going to enjoy this
one the most. :-)

What changed after the 1982 season that created more parity between the teams
that another #1 didn't win the tournament until 10 years later?

In 1983 the tournament expanded from 48 teams to 52, and introduced four
play-in games. In 1984 it expanded to 53 teams and five play-ins. In 1985 it
expanded to 64 teams, but eliminated the play-in games. Would this account for
the wide gap, or did other teams get a whole lot better, did the play ge
worse...?

Surprised no one has mentioned the "association" (not a merger!) of the
remaining teams in the MWC and C-USA.  There are currently 16 teams in that
mix, but the new league has said it wants to have between 18-24 teams.  In that
case, they'd have to add at least two schools, and as many as eight.  Smart
money is those teams would come from either the WAC or SBC, although a school
like N. Ill would be a good addition.  I think there's a good chance the WAC
and SBC will merge, especially if several teams are taken into the new
MWC/C-USA.

Unless I'm missing something, WVA had a good case. How can a conference impose
huge penalties for schools leaving the conference if those schools never agreed
to those penalties when they joined (or at any point thereafter)?

In my line of work, I could have been forced to sign a non-compete agreement
when I was hired. Or my boss could have asked me to sign one when I renewed my
contract. But my employer can't just create one in the middle of my contract
without my approval and expect it to stick.

Or am I missing something?

wrestler gets a 15 point lead, and also ends the match. If the last pts to get
the 15 pt lead occur from a near fall, the winning wrestler still gets the
opportunity to finish the hold and pin his opponent to score a fall instead ofa
technical fall (that is the one situation in which a technical fall does not
instantly end a match just like a fall).
In a dual meet, a win is always 3 points. Any points more than 3 points, e.g.
major decision, tech fall, fall, dq, or default, are called bonus points,
because they are a bonus on top of the 3 points for winning the match. A major
decision is 1 bonus pt, tech fall is 1 or 2, fall, dq, and defaults are 3 bonus
points.
That is NCAA and high school. In international style, matches are best 2 out of
3 periods, so while a fall still wins the entire match a tech fall only wins
the period.

you get 1 point, awarded at the end of the match. Stalling is also called less
aggressively in college, since it is essentially legal to stall when you are in

Dual meet scoring is the same as high school. 6 for a pin, forfeit, default, or

I worked out with Oregon State for 2 years when Zalesky first got there, back
when I was in grad school. It was clear then that Zalesky was going to change
the team, and I am glad to see them making a solid showing with their 22-14
loss to Iowa. They actually beat Iowa State 27-12 to take 2nd in a regional
that included Virginia Tech, Northern Iowa, and Wisconsin. Iowa had two 1 pt
victories; switch those two and Oregon State heads to the final four.

The more intriguing aspect of realignement and the non-BCS bowls is the
"one-off" possiblities for these bowls, especially the smaller ones.  For
example, the Holiday Bowl.  I wouldn't be surprised to see them stay with the
B12/P12 arrangement, but give the bowl an out to invite SDSU under certain 
conditions.  Same with the Cotton and SMU.  If the ADs at ND and BYU have any
brains, they'll look for similar options in some of the bowls that are going to
find themselves orphans as a result of realignment.

defections.  The WAC is probably on par with the MAC and Sun Belt...if not even
worse.  CUSA is down to 9 teams now and 8 when Memphis leaves.

The same is really true for the Mtn West...Fresno, Nevada and Hawaii doesn't
make up for losing TCU, Boise, Utah and San Diego State.

If anything, the gulf between the top five and bottom five leagues has gotten
much bigger...and it was big enough to begin with.  The Big East is somewhere
in the murky middle.

Yes, the SEC is only adding those two teams.  Barring a raid of the ACC --
which, given the ACC's new exit fee rules, is almost impossible -- it's
extremely unlikely that the SEC would expand beyond this unless Oklahoma
eventually decides its through with the Big 12.

Texas A&M will play in the West, Missouri will play in the East.  All other
division alignments will remain the same.  SEC teams will still play an 8 game
schedule, with six games against division opponents and two cross-over games.

Texas A&M will host their SEC debut against Florida on Sept. 8; Missouri will
do the same on that day against Georgia.

Missouri hosts Georgia, Vanderbilt, Alabama and Kentucky; they play at South
Carolina, Florida, Tennessee and Texas A&M (to close the season).

Texas A&M hosts Florida, Arkansas, LSU and Missouri.  They play at Mississippi,
Auburn, Mississippi State and Alabama.

Florida's sechedule is very interesting -- they host Bowling Green to start,
then play 8 straight SEC games and are done with SEC play by November 3rd. 
They finish with 3 straight non-league games, against Louisiana-Lafayette,
Jacksonville State and (at) Florida State.

According to news reports today, which have been picked up by ESPN, the Big 12
will in fact have 10 teams beginning next July 1st.

The Big East and West Virginia have reportedly settled their lawsuits versus
one another and reached a $20 million settlement that will allow West Virginia
to leave for the Big 12 in time for the 2012-13 athletic year.

West Virginia and TCU will join Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State,
Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech.

Texas A&M and Missouri will be leaving for the SEC.

This move may also affect the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences. 
Boise State is schedule to leave the Mountain West to join the Big East in
football for the 2013-14 season -- however, they may now leave a year early to
replace West Virginia.

That would leave the Mountain West with 9 football teams for the 2012-13
season...and that number will shrink to 8 for the 2013-14 season.

Fresno State and Nevada (all sports) and Hawaii (football only) are coming on
board to join Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico, UNLV and Wyoming.  San
Diego State will play next year in the Mountain West before leaving to join
Boise State in the Big East in football.

Boise's other sports will reportedly go back to the WAC.

Football members of the Big East for the 2012-13 season:  Connecticut,
Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Cincinnati, Louisville, South Florida and
(maybe) Boise State.  (That's 8.)

Five teams will join for the 2013-14 season -- Houston, SMU, UCF, Memphis, and
San Diego State.  This means that the Big East will be a 13-team football
league for that year only.

Pittsburgh and Syracuse will both leave for the ACC following 2013-14, which
means the Big East will be an 11-team football league in 2014-15.

Finally, Navy will join in football only for the 2015-16 season...giving the
Big East 12 teams again.

I don't think there is a regulation on where you get the tapes or footage from.

Facilities help get the top recruits.. Tapes =really= help find a recruits
who are under the radar.. It is like being able to find great players in the
4-6th rounds of the NFL draft, or even undrafted who can play at the level.
It takes time and skill to be able to draft in those rounds and get a solid
starter.

State, instead Nike gathers recruiting information and hands it over to the
school. They have huge libraries of videotape from the probably tens of
thousands of high school events they sponsor. Add in the Nike people who are
there in person and that is a huge scouting network.

I seem to recall Lou Nanne and Glen Sonmore personally recommended the U of MN
to Zach Parise (as they are friends with his dad J.P.), and there being a
"scolding" or "penalty" of the U of MN by the NCAA over that.  If the NCAA gets
its panties bundled over such a third-party non-monetary incident like that, I
wonder what prevents them from caring that a large corporation is attempting to
funnel talent to certain universities in an effort to increase its income?

Interesting... I just received an email that Nike has decided to move Oregon
State past "Tier-1" status. Right now the Tier-1 schools for Nike are Ohio
State, USC, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Texas, and Oregon, with Oregon being
the only "better than Tier-1" school.
The proposal is to turn Oregon State into their flagship "traditional" brand,
as a contrast to Oregon as the flagship "unconvential" brand. Nike says part of
this will be assisting Oregon State in recruiting to make them a national level
power (and Nike has a 8-year contract now to design exclusively for Oregon and
Oregon State, with showcase exclusive uniforms for each year's Civil War game).
The new "brand" and recruiting program would debut with the 2013 season if
Oregon State agrees.
That might create an interesting shift in the Pac-12.

Read an article on espn.com about the possibility of Oregon luring Coach Pete
to replace Kelly if he leaves. It had this line:

"The Ducks could double his $2 million salary -- and give his assistant coaches
huge raises, too."

I had to laugh at that. His assistant coaches have already left him to take
assistant coaching jobs at other schools. I think there's one assistant left
from 3-4 years ago.

directed to Oregon imporperly thanks to their use of some "recruiting
service"...but I don't really remember a lot of details about that off the top
of my head.  It's not been in the news much since last off-season.

Of course, there were long periods of silence in that USC case, so...sometimes
silence can be the worst for potential NCAA rule-breakers.

Ferentz is entering the second year of the 5-year Iowa cycle.  Next year will
be similar, then he should have an unexpectedly good year with a junior
quarterback, followed by a disappointing year.

So, you should expect Iowa to go about 7-5 or 6-6, then 11-1 or 10-2, then be
ranked top 5 at the beginning of the year and finish with 7 or 8 wins.

That takes them out to 2015, at which point Ferentz's kids are all gone and he
might hang it up.

school of choice.  We used to go over there at least a couple times a year, and

Speaking of the MAC, I'm looking foward to see how UMass does when they start
league play there this season.  Despite being a .500 team the past few years,
UMass has traditionally been a 1-AA power in the both the East and nationally.
What's interesting is to look at their schedule the past three years, each year
they've played an AQ school on the road (Kansas St, Mich, and BC) and at least
four ranked 1-AA schools.  Based on that, I'd say their schedules the past
three years (and maybe longer) have been as competative as what they'll play in
the MAC for the foreseeable future.  Not predicitng they will take the MAC by
storm like Marshall did when they moved "up" to the MAC from !-aa, but I think
they'll be competative.

Couple other things of note, UMass will have a new head coach former ND
offensive coordinator (at least in title) Charley Molnar.  UMass' addition to
the MAC will also force BGSU to move from the East to the West, a move they
can't be happy about considering the West is generally the more competative to
the two divisions.

The trouble that I see from Gene Smith is that he apparently had people in
Columbus, as well as many people in the major Statewide media (the Dispatch,
Enquirer, Plain Squealer, Blade, Daily News, Beacon-Journal, and ONN etc.)
believing his line of bull. Some of the people who believed his speil were
undoubtedly local recruits and their families. As you know, many other major
D-I schools rely on out-of-State talent to suppliment and prop up their
football teams, but at Ohio State, the majority of the talent is in-State
because of Ohio's prep football tradition. Because Ohio is a high school
football hotbed, that kind of mea culpa could give recruits from in-State the
impression that the Athletic Department in Columbus is unstable and a source of
trouble. Until Gene Smith is gone, I fear that it is.
