heh, now that i think about it, the only reason i prefer osx over windows for a
desktop environment is because of iterm2 and the cmd+[ / cmd+] to switch
browser tabs vs ctrl+tab / ctrl+shift+tab. other than that, i have the same
apps and experience the same functionality on both (actually, osx might be a
little less stable but i'm not entirely sure).

also, who cares about sysinternal anymore:
http://nmap.org/nsedoc/scripts/smb-psexec.html :)

I do like the task bar in Win 7 quite a bit.

Windows 7 has been very stable for me too, but i can't guage if that is because
I _only_ use it for Outlook and IE (and even within IE. I only use it for one
particular work-internal web site which requires IE for the web apps to work.)

That said, I still prefer the Mac OS X Lion "spaces" (along with the
gestures support) over Windows 7 environment management, but I am sure
there are nuances in Windows 7 I have not seen yet, because I have not been
forced to notice them.

yes, win7 is quite stable (my work computer has been up for 2+ months with no
signs of age. though, i still can't say that i prefer windows over unix-y oses.
this is mainly because of old school kernel behaviors that aren't likely to go
away - drive letters, lack of device names (ie, what is my network card
called?), dir is just old (i want ls --color and ls -l), and maybe i'm wrong on
this, but i don't know of anything like selinux (mandatory access control
system) for windows.

but, for a desktop environment, window s 7 pretty solid. (oh, no real terminal
program sucks too - it's the only reason i run virtualbox on this system -
putty doesn't quite cut it and i'm not buying securecrt)

Microsoft took over sysinternals a couple of years ago. Mark Russinovich is now
on one of the Windows product teams, kernel I think. Windows 7 does have a lot
better resource tools (available in all versions). The unix toolkits are really
not necessary particularly if you learn powershell.
If all you used was up through XP, Windows is much different now. Windows 7 is
rock solid for me and many I know. I like the taskbar much better than the Mac
dock, too. You can keep your fruity OSes.

I used to use "sysinternals" to handle that kind of stuff.
Although, With WIndows 7, My understanding was that a lot of that stuff was
basked in. You may need to enable it though. I think it's called Unix-something
or other, and you may need to have the right "version" of Windows to have it.

sysinternals.com (holy shit, did Microsoft take over sysinternals?)

Fuck Windows. :-)

Actually, the history of the Xbox had zero bearing on its ability to run
emulators well.

The reason both the Xbox and the Xbox 360 have had robust homebrew software is
because Microsoft's strength is in dev tools.

Most of the homebrew software (as-in 95%+ of it) was written and compiled with
leaked copies of the Xbox and Xbox 360 SDK. When you're using native tools, it
makes coding a whole lot easier. Doubly so when you're using official
documentation.

Once both systems got the ability to run unsigned code via modding, emulators
were quick to appear.

Given that the CPU architecture of both is quite different, you can't really
claim the x86 CPU in the Xbox is "why it ran the emulators so damn well." ;)

The original Xbox used mostly off-the-shelf parts with some minor hardware
customization and an original OS.

The alpha Xbox dev kit was a PC, but that does not mean the final hardware was
a PC.

The Xbox 360 used a good chunk of off-the-shelf hardware, though the CPU, GPU
and video encoder were customized. In part this was to avoid royalty issues MS
had with the original system.

The alpha Xbox 360 dev kit was a Power Mac, but that does not mean the final
hardware was a Mac.

TB>
It's tempting.. if we were a machine shop that could be do-able.
Unfortunately, it's not as simple as drilling holes.. there are also guides for
the holes that run down from the top.

For what it's worth, Dell simply said I needed new rails and referred me to
racksolutions.com, who does not have any sort of trade in policy and prices way
higher than everywhere else. I'm thinking my best bet is probably just to Ebay
the old rails and buy new ones for the 2950s. The old rails go for a lot less
(~$30-50 versus $125 for the 2950 rails) but I can make up for it in volume.

The "fat" Xbox 360 had issues with the original run, but those were resolved
before the slim came out, including the fan noise as the revised units ran much
cooler and with less power. As for the solder, you saw that on both the
original Xbox 360 and PS3 revisions. Netiher Microsoft nor Sony took the issues
with lead-free solder into account.

If you break it down, the Xbox 360 "fat" had five retail motherboard revisions
(six if you count the onboard flash type). The Xbox 360 "slim" has had two
retail motherboard revisions (four it you count the onboard flash type). None
of this takes into account the different DVD-ROM drives across the various
revisions.

Xbox 360 "fat":
Xenon - Original release and most problem prone.
Zephyer/Xephyer - First revision, adds HDMI.
Opus - Same as first revision, no HDMI. Used when refurbing Xenon models.
Falcon - Lower power (175W), improved heat sink.
Jasper - Even lower power (150W), comes in three variants (16MB flash, 256MB
flash and 512MB flash). I misspoke earlier when I implied it only had one.

Xbox 360 "slim":
Trinity - Addes two extra USB ports, adds Kinect AUX port, drops memory card
ports. Comes in two flash variants.
Current model - Can't recall the board name off hand. Again, two flash
variants.

Most would argue that anything from Falcon forward "got it right."

Two of the pegs line up on the rails but one (closest to the front) does not.
So they're definitely not interchangeable. I may try giving Dell a call,
though they'll probably just tell me to buy new rails. Maybe they'd at least
know if there were a conversion kit of some sort. It seems like you could just
replace the inner-most plate (the one with the peg guides) with a conversion
kit.

I have a couple of server cabinets (one Dell, one HP) where I'd like to install
some new PowerEdge 2950 servers we picked up. However, the new systems did not
come with rails. When I go out looking for rails, they're usually over $125
per set shipped.

We have a big box of rails here that are apparently for PowerEdge 2450/2550
servers. Probably at least a dozen sets. Is there any way to convert them (ie
conversion kits) or anything else I can do to trade these up? I'd really hate
to shell out the money for each 2950 rail set. I suppose one option would be
to sell the older rails to try and recoup some of my money for the new rails..

The original Xbox was underpowered and really wasn't interesting.

The original Xbox 360 and minor variants of the original were LOUD, ran HOT,
and exhibited the infamous RROD problem due to a skimpy heat sink and a lousy
solder job, but when it ran, was great, if a bit loud. Think: server or
Mac Pro rendering loud.

The Xbox 360 Slim is quiet, runs cool, and even when run hard for hours is
only as loud as the original Xbox 360 was at idle. It fits right at home in
a home theater setup.

Turanga> probably nothing. According to Wikipedia's comparison, k3b doesn't
support Blu-Ray or Dual Layer Blu-Ray, which I find hilarious considering k3b
is probably updated more often than that Wikipedia stub. Oh, and apparently
CDBurnerXP has had a long-standing AHCI issue where PATA burners aren't
detected whereas IMGBURN, Deepburn, K3b and other apps don't give a shit.

My main gripe with all Windows/Linux based authoring apps is Nero is the only
realiable burning software that has a better chance at burning an Apple .DMG
image of an OS X Snow Leoprard dvd without fucking it up and I was not about to
install that bloated bastard back on my system.

IMGBURN made an non-bootable coaster.
TransMAC puked mid-burn.
Brasero outright said FUCK YOU and refused ...
All attempts at coverting to ISO botched the HP file system of the DMG ...

By the time Google turned up how to boot the Macbook to a Unix prompt and type
two commands that would restore the administrator account, I burnt a box of
Verbatim DLs coasters. Dumbass client buys a Macbook 7 off Craigs list -- no
charger, no discs, nothing. As is. Previous owner never wiped his account, so
it booted up to his password prompt. Client comes crying to my nephew who then
comes crying to me -- a person who hadn't touched an Apple machine since the
IIgs and wanted to keep it that way.

Once the client bought a charger and dropped it off, I got the admin account
restored, whacked that previous user, transfered the 6GB DMG over via Wireless
(holy hell did that take forever), burned it to the last DVD DL I had,
installed rEFIt, rebooted it twice, and told the client the next day, "Let me
know if the wifey wants Linux Mint 12 installed."

A friend of mine had an old computer with an IBM hard drive from ages ago that
apparently didn't work. I googled how to revive it if at all possible and
heard suggestions about putting the drive in the freezer (which should give you
a few minutes to grab whatever data you can before it fails again).

Then I read about using a screwdriver to tap the side of the hard drive a few
times.

I took out the hard drive, tapped it on the side firmly a few times with the
handle of a screwdriver.

The hard drive worked for a long time and I was able to get all the data off
it. I can't say that will work for all failed hard drives.

That said, SMART status never predicted the death of any drive I've ever owned.
SMART was okay and the next day the drive had given up the ghost.

Nightspawn> I'm a big fan of the Ultimate Boot CD/DVD. It has MemTest on
it...as well as countless other utilities. It has HDD diagnostics from all the
main vendors too. Download and burn that, boot up. Choose HDD, Diagnostic,
and then the appropriate manufacturer. If you don't know, go into SeaTools
(Seagates), as it is very forgiving and will at least identify the drive. It's
good at scanning other drives that you don't have the specific diagnostics for.

What you're describing really sounds like a failing hard drive. I doubt you
can 'fix' it. You can potentially contain it for a bit, but it will most
likely fail sooner than later. I'd work on making sure all your data is backed
up if you haven't already. Start pricing drives and move on. :)

memtest86 tests only your RAM.

What you want is smartmontools for Windows. See it here:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki/Download#Windows-Installthe
Windowspackage

http://tinyurl.com/yflyqmu

Keep in mind it is not the most user-friendly program out there, to put it
very kindly. It is designed for system management via scripting.

The documentation SUCKS ASS, like most F/OSS projects (which is why it will
never be Year of the Linux Desktop). WHen you install let it install the
per-drive context menus (I forget what the installer calls them), run the long
test by right-clicking the drive and selecting run long test, then after it is
done view the SMART info by right clicking it and selecting the option to
display drive info. Copy and paste it here and we will be able to tell you
whether the drive is failing based on S.M.A.R.T. status.

So...my laptop has gotten more and more unstable, I'm strongly suspecting hard
drive failure since now if I try to access certain files (which I suspect are
in bad sectors of the hard drive) the computer completely freezes and I have to
reboot and wait for chkdsk to scan. The files are recently used files such as
movie files which are also large files so they'd hit larger sections of hard
drive than smaller files like images, documents.

So...with that said. Any utilities I should run that could fix this? Any
fantastic deals going for large size laptop drives (speed isn't so much a
concern, but this is a 300gb drive mostly full, which I fortunately have backed
up last week so I shouldn't really be losing anything critical if it fails
completely).

Wow, MS previously said Windows on Arm (WOA) would have an emulation layer so
legacy Windows apps would run on the new platform. Now they're saying only new
apps will run on Windows 8 ARM, the MUST be Metro UI and they MUST be delivered
through the Windows Store. MS Office is an exception to all of this.
http://tinyurl.com/7gdatej

Ok, my laptop just spontaneously rebooted itself, I was of course AFK so I
missed any error or BSOD. Last night while I was using it, twice, it froze
spontaneously and after a few minutes of me trying to get the task manager or
some response with the three finger salute it went black screen until I powered
it off and rebooted it. Second time it did that chkdsk found no errors. Any
logs I could check to possibly see what happened or anything to check for
common causes of this? Windows Vista.

A co-worker brought me a little external hdd that had some important files and
while the root level folders seemed to be intact, there were no files or
folders underneath. It said space was used on the drive but no amount of
getting properties on folders showed where.

I ran a scandisk and now I just have the typical "Found.000" folder with a
bunch of *.chk files in there. Anyone know how to recover these files? I
tried a utility from a Google search called Flobo but it gives me a bad vibe
and seems like it may be a hoax to get $19 out of the co-worker. Any other
options? I have both Windows XP/7 and Linux at my disposal to run tools on.

DrSteve> Not bad at all. I deal mostly with WD drives because Data Life Guard
for both Windows and DOS detects the serial number and firmware of WD drives
and compares it to the SMART diagnostics table to determine if the drive is
still under warranty before you even call their support line.

Nightspawn> IMGBURN all the way. Tons of options, features, and nowhere near as
bloated as Nero nor cumbersome with wonky-assed virtual drivers that either
cause coasters, degrades speed/performance or both.

I was thinking that
Plextor would have come down in price these days but apparently not! lol.
$200! Various forums on the 'net claim that Plextor isn't the same company as
before (some company in China produces their drives for them?) and has lower
quality.

I remember though on the BBS years ago when it was said that Plextor was the
king. I couldn't justify forking out $200 for a DVD writer.. that's like the
cost of a new motherboard, processor and RAM.

Dr. Steve> Slow random reads/writes could be a number of things, but they most
of the time they all boil down to just two: (1) the power supply's rails are no
longer up to snuff to feed the power needs of the drive and thus sacrifices
speed for maintaining stability or (2) the drive is failing and will be dead
within hours/days/weeks. A good way to rule out (1) is to run Everrest to
monitor the voltage rails and then send a performance intensive command to the
drive (i.e. format, defrag, etc.).

If the +12 voltage rail suddenly drops to around 14.5, your power supply isn't
cutting it anymore (the cut-off point in the ATX spec for stability on the +12
rail is 14.4 volts). However, the voltages are remaining stable with minimal
flux yet the drive is dogshit slow, the drive is done. Everrest does have a
SMART monitoring tool, but SMART often reports that a failing drive is fine one
moment until suddenly it gives up the ghost.

Another option is to see if Hitachi has any DOS based drive utilities. If so,
use the tool uunetbootin on a USB flash stick so that it'll boot to FreeDos.
Then copy the DOS-based Hitachi utility to the flash stick, and give it a
whirl.

Mild Seven: If it's a desktop and has a SATA controller built in, you can just
buy any popular SSD and plug it in. If it lacks a SATA controller, you could
buy a SATA controller card. You can get adapters to adapt a SATA drive to an
IDE controller, but I have not had good luck with them. If you are dealing with
a laptop and it has a SATA controller, you should be able to just plug in the
SSD. If it has an IDE controller, you would have to find an older IDE SSD drive
on eBay, and it's going to cost more and not be available in larger sizes. You
would probably be better off just getting a fast, conventional IDE hard drive
for the laptop.

Problems with backing up - could it by my H/D?
Last night my regularly scheduled back up to my 2nd H/D failed. The drive was
visible in Explorer, but had zero content and kept insisting that I format it.
I tried and it wouldn't even get started. I ran the HP system check and
everything checked out fine. Tried to format again and it worked fine. Today
I have been trying to manually back up and the access times have varied from
1.6 MB/s to 50 for pictures! Does this sound like my H/D could be dying?
The helpful software from Hitachi doesn't work for squat, told me my heads were
aligned and the "diagnistic" software fails to launch on reboot from a CD or
USB drive! No doubt not Win 7 compliant!

This might not work for you.. but.. you coudl get an SSD drive for your
system, and that gets rid of the spin up issues and drops your electric use by
half, as well as improves the speed..

You might be able to get your system that is on all the time on an ARM
processor type of system. The one I have uses 10watts of power max, and
idle is almost instant, and there isn't like "stepping" so it is full on
or idle.

They have some limitations. They are faster then what you would think
at what they can do. But they aren't going to knock your socks off yet
either. Good for like a personal fileserver/multimedia, a jumpbox, a backup
server, print server, small web server, etc.

Then maybe you can shut off your main client machine, when you aren't using
it and with the 20 second boot off an SSD, you aren't getting frustrated
wasting time when you want to use your systems either.

I can't reach
the power button though, so I use the sleep feature. hitting any key on the
keyboard wakes the machine up.
the only time i have an issue is when the screen won't wake up for whatever
reason, and I have to dig out the laptop to force reset the machine.

my lungs probably need a good scrubbing or some canned air. ;-)

I was having a discussion with a colleague about whether it is better to let
your computer run 24/7 or to shut it down. I argued that turning it on and off
is probably harder on it (hard disks power cycling/spinning up, power supply)
than just letting it run all the time.

What's the consensus here about that? Okay to leave the PC on all the time?

I also assume it
would work with ghost images made with prior versions of Ghost? That would be
much preferred as most of my images to this point are ghost files.

Ghost 11 (AKA Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.0) and newer all work fine with
Win7 and such if you want to stick with ghost.

For free you can use Microsofts Image X (and a few simple MS tools like
diskpart and bcdboot to get the boot stuff right)... but this requires a little
understanding of what you're doing, whereas I've yet to see anything Ghost 11
didn't "just work" on

Looking to expand my 'toolbox' for imaging computers. I have pretty much been
using Norton Ghost 2003 (I've found it pretty reliable when newer versions
wouldn't work for me) and sometimes use Drive Snapshot
(http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en) when needing to make images that Ghost doesnt
work on, or when I need a browsable image.

However, been encountering more and more as I deal with more Windows 7 boxes on
OEM machines with hidden restore partitions that these don't work at all or as
well as I'd like. Last week I had a computer that Ghost did it's thing, but it
wouldn't boot off the drive. I was going to a WD drive, so I was able to use
their Acronis True Image for WD
(http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en) to get
it to copy right and boot.

What is the current 'go to' that people recommend based on experience? I'm not
very linux literate, but I do use the UBCD for HDD diagnostics and memory
tests, so I have available what is on there, but never used them, etc.

Recommendations? :) Thanks in advance.

Count: I started with the policy that I wouldn't overclock a CPU I couldn't
afford to lose. That being said, I am a conservative overclocker and just do it
to eek out a little free performance. My first overclock was a Pentium 75
overclocked to 100. Zero stability issues. I've overclocked a K62+ from 400 to
500. Also no issues. My current system is an Athlon 2. I have a slight
overclock on it, 2.5 to 2.7Ghz. I'm sure it could go higher. As long as you
have adequate cooling and don't overclock too far, there is little risk.

If you want to invest in something really crazy like a waterfall cooling system
like the Cray 2 had, you could probably hit 5 to 6 GHz - but the cost/benefit
is not very good. Today's processors are so insanely fast that what's the point
of overclocking? You'll be choked by memory or I/O bandwidth, or by your GPU if
the goal is achieving 2fps more. It's just easier to wait for the next
generation processor to come out.

Depends on the hardware.

The 300A overclocked 50% SUPER SUPER reliabily. I ran that system for a couple
years and never had a single issue.

Most -k series Intel processors currently overclock 100% stable a fair bit
(though not typically 50%).

Now, the folks with whacky water-cooling setups who have 6 car radiators
connected to their PC, they probably push stability boundries a bit... but in
general if you do your research a stable OC is very simple.

Any SATA port can support hot swapping EXCEPT the boot drive providing you are
running AHCI. If you are running IDE emulation, all bets are off.

However, some ACPI/APM drivers screw up the works when a PC comes out of sleep
mode. Sometimes changes are made to the profiles such that eSATA ports are
disabled, and the drivers aren't smart enough to reinitialize the ports.

Win7+External HD

Whenever I turn off my external HD and turn it back on, i have to reboot
my win7 box to get it to show up again. That doesn't seem right.
Its connectived via USB. Why is it requiring a reboot?
I went into device manager and told it to scan for devices, found nothing.
My google fu is not working today.
