OK, I just noticed that my laptop has the Dock setup so that it is not 3D
looking, evne though it is on the bottom of the screen. (it has the appears
of the side-dock, even though it's on the bottom.)

It must be a carried-forward hidden option from years ago which has survived
my many time machine installs when going to the newer versions of OS X.

Anyone know how to make this happen? I want to do it on my work desktop.

What do people do about session management / automatic program startup under
Lion? I used to have it just start all my typical stuff in the Startup Items
group, but now with Lion remembering everything that's running and
auto-restarting it when I log back in I've been using that of late, but
sometimes that can be a PITA because I might accidentally quit something and
then not notice it's absent (e.g. Adium or Propane)

Thoughts?

I think Apple dumbing down OS X Server -- they actually removed parts of
Server Admin and Workgroup Manager without replacing them with similar
GUI functionality -- was my main beef with Lion. Most of the things like
'natural scrolling', etc, are easily reversable in the UI. I was pretty
impressed with it when it came out, although Safari and networking in
general was crashtastic.

My biggest concern with Apple coming out with a new OS every year
instead of every other year is that from a bug-fixing and enterprise
perspective this will probably mean that more bugs are never fixed in a
software update than currently. I have plenty of experience beating my
head against a desk trying to get Apple to fix bugs for customers, and
usually what happens is this: Apple to my knowledge has no 'support
engineering' or 'continuing engineering' group the way that Microsoft or
higher-end unix vendors like Sun have. This means that the internal
developers serve two masters- they have to write new features for the
next OS at the same time they write fixes for software updates on the
current OS. This is not the best of situations.

And when you have situations like Apple re-writing their windows file
sharing or directory services from scratch (which came out in Lion),
you run into two different complications: 1) Users that want fixes on
Snow Leopard for their directory services bug probably aren't going to
get it because that bug doesn't exist in Lion (by definition because
they dumped that code) and 2) especially in larger organizations, it's
next to impossible to test the new code in a close-to-production
environment before that OS comes out, and Apple's dot-zero releases,
like just about any software out there, is kinda buggy. Most large orgs
will wait (or have to wait) till a .2 or .3 release before upgrading.
But if Apple is coming out with a new OS every year, it's unlikely that
anything past .3 or maybe .4 is even going to be released, which means
the first fairly mature version of an OS X is also the last version.

And then you throw in the fact that Apple doesn't support running
earlier versions of the software on new hardware. So Apple releases
10.8.3 one day, in the next several months School X or Company Y places
an order for a few hundred iMacs and creates a custom image for that
system, and then Apple comes out with 10.9, and at that point any new
iMacs that are released won't run 10.8.3, meaning the school/business
either has to support/test multiple images or update all their systems
to the new (unstable) version of the software. Not the greatest
situation in the world for IT groups wanting to use Macs.

Where I have had a lot of problems alread is with Mountain Lion. Obviously
I'm not expected anything more than a dev build there, but that one's
definitely not ready for prime time yet. Network keeps dying in particular.

Also the beta version of Messages is fucked up on both Lion and Mountain Lion.
After waking it just refuses to connect up. Haven't dug into it very far. Be
warned. The Apple account iMessage link works great though. It's nice to be
able to continue a conversation from the desktop to the iPhone while on the
road. That'll be slick when it's more stabilized. Various other bugs there
too though.

The only issue on that list that I have seen since having used Lion since it
was first released is the backwards scrolling, which is customizeable. It's
actually become natural enough now with the trackpad that I prefer it reversed
when combined with the other gestures. What I don't like is reversed for the
mouse wheel, and especially since I jump around to various non-Mac machines a
lot. What they really need there is seperate options for the pad and the
wheel, but alas they are linked.

I have had no crashing problems with Lion though.

Boss hating Lion> It seems that his issues were on:

- The backwards scrolling (natural scrolling I believe it was called?)
- GarageBand & other apps stopped working completely.
- Some of his apps just started randomly crashing (he really got used to the
"Reopen" window)
- The "Spaces" configuration panel also crashed whenever he tried to change
anything

I didn't get to know what else did he hate, because soon after that the whole
MBP crapped out (HDD failure). It might have been the faulty HDD behind the
crashes, but it seems that my boss just doesn't want to even try Lion again.

If we do get those new MBP's, I'll probably get Lion so I'll have to see for
myself if those complaints had any merit...

Sheik>> Thanks for the heads up there. The command line tools are even better
than that. It's not just for writing command line tools, but appears to be for
any and all OSX development. I don't do OSX development, but the biggest turn
off right now for me is the newest XCode. In previous versions you at least
had the ability to set the default editor but they decided to pull it in 4.3.
Frustrating. For those of us with vim burned into our brains, that XCode
editor is like needle in the eyes. Don't get me started about Eclispse.

There's a significant difference between the FCP X situation and the Unix-head
situation. Apple wants developers. By rebooting FCP X, they actually make
developers *OVERJOYED* because they get to write 1) 64-bit apps and plugins
that they can charge editors for again and 2) can write helper apps that do the
things that FCP 7 used to do and FCP X probably never will do.

This is compared to unix-heads, which to a large extent *ARE* developers (or at
least, like to roll their own). Heck, Apple just went out of their way
in the last week to release just the command-line pieces to Xcode so
that people writing command-line tools don't have to download the whole
Xcode package:

http://www.kennethreitz.com/xcode-gcc-and-homebrew.html

There's different parts of the 'pro' market, and Apple has supported
different parts of this market to a different extent. They used to have
at least okay support for servers, but that's been dumped slowly but
surely over time. The pro video market, in my opinion, is still an open
question. I think the unix and developer people have had the most
success in getting Apple's ear, simply because Apple needs them
(developers) not just for the Mac, but for iOS as well. I think the only
time they suffer is when Apple introduces some new 'black box'
technology that either breaks their existing implementation or isn't
easily scriptable. The 'personal firewall' that shipped with...Leopard,
I think? is a good example of this, but Apple still included ipfw on
those systems as well. Heck, OS X has never had /etc /tmp or /var in the
root directory...those are actually sim-links to /private/ (some NeXT
cruft). I think as long as Apple has a group that writes development
tools, they are going to actively going to work with the unixheads.

As for Mountain Lion, I made a joke the other day that Apple won't use
'Cougar' as the name for their OS until OS X is past its prime and
hungry for customers.

I actually don't mind the new spaces, but it's more about the gestures to
change that does it for me I guess. Not bad. I never really used Spaces
before. Now what I want them to do is take a lesson from Gnome 3 (!) and
automatically manage those spaces. If a space has no windows in it, it should
not exist. I like that

By integrated, I think they really mean "those shitty
intel grpahics chips" but I could be wrong.

Why does win8 appear to be a stinker? Sell the consumers an embedded computer, that
they can't fuck up, and that eliminates about 80% of the support calls.

Given the iPhones are making more money then the whole of Microsoft, it isnt
really a tough decision.

What I do like about Microsofts plan is they arent strangling their userbase.

It is not in Apple's interests to keep power users from doing what their want
with their Macs. There are a metric buttload of people inside Apple who are
dyed in the wool UNIX buffs - Apple makes a LOT of money selling computers to
peoplw who need UNIX on the back end, they are not about to screw the pooch
the way you're describing.

Apple's brilliant decisions with Lion and now Mountain Lion do seem to have
annoyed at least some of the Applefan userbase. My boss has been using Macs for
quite some time now, but he really, really got annoyed by Lion. In fact, it
broke most of his apps and it seems it made his old MBP crap out. He's using
another MBP and stuck with Snow Leopard.

The Gatekeeper in its current form isn't much of an issue, Feoh, and it's
possible that most of us agree with this. But it isn't what Apple is
implementing *now* what worries us, it's what they will want to do *later*.
Given their history, it's following the "boiled frog" recipe so that when 10.9
comes out, they'll simply whack off the "disable" option and argue that because
only 1% of users used that option, nobody will notice.

Removing these options, or not implementing options are usually met with these
kind of arguments. See how the comments on "can't delete songs on my iPod"
went.

Of course, Apple isn't the only one doing this; MS is now screwing their users
in the same way with Win8, especially with Win8-ARM which will be *forced* to
use the MS store (or whatever they'll bring out). Sony fucked over its geek
userbase with the OtherOS nerfing. But some of these companies (especially
Microsoft) seem to be taking it out from the successful guy, which points back
to Apple. (Ok, maybe Sony/OtherOS isn't the case for that, but Win8 definitely
IS.)

I'm getting increasingly worried on whatever OSX's path goes down, as I've been
hinted that my next company-issued laptop will be an MBP. I'd be miffed if I
finally get it, just to get stuck with the latest OS that won't let me do jack
shit b/c I use non-Apple approved software.

Archmage> I already know I probably messed up on the size of the partitions but
I am going to make due with what I have. I was under the impression that it was
best to make them seperate Time Machine partitions because it says that when it
runs out of room it deletes the old.
I think I can make due for now. I was really nervous deleting anything even
though I knew I had back ups.

Actually, you are correct. I'll recant what I said.
I was thinking it'd be better to have the larger volume in case you run out of
space in 1 of the 2, but the way you hav eit now, you you won't have old
backups from one computer causing the other computer to not have space
to keep old backups.

Just be warned that you might decide at a later time that you wish you had
used different size partitions. It happens.

Why would I need to keep them together? I figured it would be easier for me if
I kept them seperate and I could always put stuff in those partions that I only
want for a certain computer.

Ok stupid question. Is the best way to transfer the iphotos library to the
external drive libary through copy and paste? I went to the internal HD and
copied it and then went to the external hard drive partition that I created and
copying them over. Copying "iphoto library" to "storage"
Is that the best method?

I have already made DVD backups of the photos so there is no problem there. I
just want to make sure I can clean up my macbook for space but still be able to
access the pictures externally.

I should have done this sooner.

Ok I finally got my external hard drive. I need to know how to make a second
library on iphoto '08 so I can have most of my photos on the external drive but
be able to access the iphoto application and some photos from the internal hard
drive on my macbook. I have created three partitions on my external drive. 1.
time machine for macbook 2.extra storage(iphoto & itunes) 3. time machine for
imac. That is the plan right now. I still have to back up a few photos before
I transfer them over.
Thanks for the help.

I'm not trying to be a gadfly here, but can you cite
specific examples?

I'm thinking about the App Store, which all the geeks ranted and roared about
for MONTHS. Nobody HAS to use it. It's a choice. I can install my own stuff
whenever and from wherever I want, I have Homebrew on my Mac and build most of
my work-a-day tools from source. Yet I still buy some apps from the app store
'cause it's simple and convenient *AND* seamlessly lets me install apps I've
bought on every machine I own. Win win win. How is anyone being trumped in
any way?

(Mr Tinkertrain/214647) Mac Mail question:

Mac Mail question:

When email comes into Mac mail, does it strip out the attachments and put in
the Mail Downloads, or are the Mail Downloads only if someone, say,
double-clicks on an attachment? If so, does the original attachment stay in
the email?

I ask because we're out of space on one of our servers, and if those downloads
are just unnecessary duplicates, I'll delete them

(it's on a share for ex employees, their data is retained for a little while)

(River/214638) Another G4 question...

Another G4 question...

I've got a Quicksilver (2001) which I had years ago upgraded with a Sonnet dual
1.8 GHz CPU. Never quiet to begin with, ever since the upgrade...let's just
say it's loud.

I had already replaced the PSU fan and the 120mm case fan with quieter models
with equal or greater airflow. The primary culprits are the two 50mm fans on
the CPU heat sink. Each one is pushing 13 cfm. I'd like to remove these two
fans and substitute a much quieter single 80mm fan that pushes 32 cfm.

A picture of an identical Sonnet CPU is here:

http://tinyurl.com/6omxwbt

The two fans are on one side of the larger heatsink, directly over the two
processors. The single fan, although pushing more air, distributes that air
over a larger surface area. Any thoughts on whether or not I could be going
down a bad road with my plan?

Unfortunately, there are no temperature sensors on the processor card, so I
can't do an accurate before/after comparison.

You mentioned rebooting...did you try rebooting while (left) clicking? Hold
the mouse down while you reboot, and the tray should open up during the reboot
process.

If you have another keyboard lying around, I would try hooking that up to the
PowerMac and seeing if the eject key on that one does anything. I have a
keyboard where one of the Control keys no longer works; it's remote, but I
suppose it's possible that the eject key on your keyboard stopped working.

Good luck!

It's a COM object and it's not sandboxed. It can also be called by other
processes that know it's CLSID. So unless it is very carefully written, it can
be exploited pretty easily. It's 'allowed' for historical reasons, because a
lot of internal apps still use it. I think the default IE security now
restricts it to intranet/trusted sites, but I'm not positive.
I do not think anybody uses it on public-facing sites these days.

Windows XP started in 2001, and MAc OS X in 2002. But that doesn't matter.

The point was made. The Design of the OS can lead to the security of the OS.
An OS can be deisgned to be more secure than other. I'll assume based on the
responses to my post that everyone will agree that Windows 7 was "designed"
to be more secure than Windows XP.

As an aside, why is Active X such a gaping hole?

I'm with Copper Lethe on this one, I think defining malware that way is an
incredibly slippery slope.

For what it's worth on the maleware discussion - my uneducated stance is quite
simply that the average Windows OS offers a number of attack vectors (ActiveX
controls, Outlook, Internet Explorer) that simply don't exist under OSX.

I've been running Macs for about a decade now. I run on virus protection, but
scan my machines quarterly with ClamAV or Sophos Just Because, and have never
had a single incidence of infection.

The one time I ever found anything was a trojan in an illegal copy of an Adobe
product a friend had downloaded on my machine but that I wouldn't let him
install :)

"Software that works exactly as the user expects it to, and does not
harm a computer or allow access without consent is not, by any
definition, "malware.""

If you can walk into an Apple Store, browse to a URL and jailbreak an iPhone
without the owner of that phone's consent, even though that might be the USER
expectation, that's certainly a definition of 'malware'. Jailbreaking
forces the system into a state where the system can no longer verify
that software is signed before running, meaning that the system is
running in a less-secure state, which users may or may not realize. This
is also a definition of malware.

I mean, 'Mac Defender' behaved as the user expected too (although it
tended to alert users to problems that weren't there). once you bought
it you actually got some antivirus protection from what I read. Is that
malware?

Making comparisons to XP is sorta behind the times. But even then, it was
possible to lock up the OS pretty hard, but the defaults were not set that way
and most did not bother. As for developers, they've been hearing the "design
secure apps" mantra for years now. Your knowledge is dated.
Windows 7 even with default settings is reasonably secure. IE is still a
mediocre browser imo but the security is much better than it used to be,
although if you allow ActiveX controls you are pretty much on your own. And if
the Mac actually becomes widespread enough, the "dummies" will be allowing crap
to install on OS X as well. People don't read dialogs, they just click OK.
Incidentally I used to make a bit of money cleaning off viruses/malware when XP
was the only game in town. Since Windows 7, it's dropped WAY off and I do not
think it is because people suddenly got more tech savvy.

It took about 5 years after OS 9 was dead before windows supporters
got rid of that argument, the last I heard it was someone at work,
and that was 2-3 years ago.

The real battle is between Android and iOS. There are probably already
more of those devices on the market then MacOS and Windows devices.

The hardware has to catch up, I don't know if that can be done in 5 years
or not. There are pieces in the roadmap but hardare development is much
slower process then software.

I am not going to sit here and pretend to be some technical expert on desktop
OS security but let's attempt to review the design deifferences between Mac
OS X and Windows XP where security is concerned:

Windows XP:
o Pretty much useless with non-Microsfot-written software unless you are the
Admin user because developers were not encouraged to design with
security in mind by Microsoft or it's SDK. (Let alone that Microsoft
pretty much encourage use of "Administrator" as the base every day user
or had no distinction between that and a user with Administrative privs.
o No check to make sure you want to install software ware, when software
attmepts to be installed. (At least, not a well-designed check.)
o Ships with an internet browser that was a purpetual gateway to maleware, see
the previous bullets.
o Upon the design if its new OP (Vista) "Security" was a huge undertaking
in the improvement to the OS. So much to a point that they went to far
and made use of the system incredibly annoying.

Mac OS X:
o Built on FreeBSD which has unix security measures in an environment which
promotes the idea of multiple users with varying permissions.
o disallowed the root user, forcing you to 'sudo' to run commands
which need root access (read , user acknlowedges risk here.)
o Any installtion of an application leads to a dialogue with acknowledge
of permission to do such a thing, and to have this happen without such
acknowledgment would require finding of a huge security hole.

I am not saying that Mac OS X is impervious to attacks. But I think it is
clear that its design lends itself to being more so than Windows had been.
I can't speak for Windows Vista/7. In my limited experience there, Windows 7
has been somewhat better. (although I do still find out about people running
Windows 7 who have to send their computers off to get viruses cleaned,
because they ask me and I have to tell them I don't know how to do that stuff
anymore.) I guess you'd argue that is due to large adoption, not OS design.

The larger adoptionof Windows is also a factor. I am not doubting that.
As much as Mac OS X gets the reputation as an "OS for dummies" it's
actually more "dummies" who run Windows and allow most common email and
internet browsers to cause a proliferation of virus and malware around
the world. It's also the Windows users who tend to do more installing
of non-reputable software instead of making sure they are only putting
high quality reputable software on their systems. (Of course, when you pay
2 to 3 times as much for your computer, you might be more inclined to also
pay for the software you need.)
When people buy cheap ass cars, they know they are saving money.
Unfortunately poeple still think they can cheap out on software and
they'll be just fine. Then they wonder why they have to hand their computer
to someone once a year to get the malware cleaned off.

Is it me or is SMB sharing in 10.7 a turd? I'm constantly having to stop and
restart file sharing on my MP with 10.7.3 to get my Windows clients to be able
to connect to it.

Then, it'll work just fine for awhile and then out of the blue it craps out.

And screen sharing is still busted.....

> The reason why doesn't matter

It matters a lot if the reason is that there aren't as many, because
telling people to get Macs erodes that advantage.

I'm pretty safe on OpenBSD, and I'm sure a big part of that is
OpenBSD's design. However, I'd be deliberately stupid if I claimed
that there wasn't also the fact that the install base is smaller by an
order of magnitude or two, so the commercial malware market doesn't
see the benefit in it. Faced with the prospect of owning all the
Windows machiens in the world versus owning all the OpenBSD machines
in the world, there a shitload more value in the former.

Computers that don't let the user install arbitrary software are also
going to be more secure than general-purpose computers. It's a
subjective question whether this is worth the loss of freedom.

"Again the software and design of the mac has NOTHING to do with the amount of
malware available."

Up until at least Windows Vista, the Windows core operating system didn't know
where a system event was coming from (mouse/keyboard, another piece of
software, etc). This was both a major vector for malware transmission and also
the cause for the relentless 'cancel or allow' dialog box in Vista.

So yes, at least up until Vista came out the Windows operating system was much
worse than the Mac architecturally at protecting the system from malware. Is
there malware for the Mac? Sure. There's been several trojans that have come
out into the wild that rely on social engineering to infect a system. There's
also malware for iOS, otherwise people wouldn't be able to jailbreak their
phones.

But given that Apple is now the number 3 PC vendor in the US (and I think in
the top 5 worldwide), and if you include iPads they are number one, it's
going to be increasingly difficult to trot out the old 'security through
obscurity' claim for much longer. Of course, in 5 years the vast
majority of computing devices are going to be mobile, and the whole Mac
vs PC argument is going to be about as topical as Hatfield vs McCoy.

Yes, and it's a tired argument. "Safer" is a tangible benefit to using Mac OS
over Windows.

These are two different things:

The NUMBER of known malware, attacks, viruses, vulnerabilities, etc., and
The LIKELIHOOD of ONE SYSTEM falling prey to malware.

The first number drives the public mis-perception, yet it has nothing to do
with the security of the Mac operating system.

Wouldn't the fanboy be the guy who thinks HIS system is safe and secure
because he believes ANOTHER operating system to be less secure? I've been
using computers since long before the internet and could count on one hand the
number of times I've even seen malware threaten to infect me. While I would
agree you are less likely to pick up something on OSX, the actual security of
the operating system is often overstated and has been debunked by people a lot
smarter than me.

You are safer on a Mac.
*Regardless of the level of "security" the operating system provides*, you are
*safer from malware* on a Mac. The threat isn't there.

I'm more likely to get shot in Homs, Syria, than I am in Lawrence, Kansas. I'm
more likely to suffer from malware on Windows than a Mac. While you can argue
"security" and "design" until you're blue in the face, the threat just isn't
there to any degree worth worrying about.

I think it's disingenuos to poopoo the security benefits of running a Mac over
Windows -- regardless of the reasons.

Archmage> The design is more secure? How so? They handed over `sudo` for all
these years.

Salubrious> Security through obscurity is a different thing altogether (it
means the security relies on keeping the implementation secret.) I'm not
arguing that macs appear to have less malware because they are more obscure or
secret. I'm saying there are fewer macs, and there are fewer attackers
interested in macs. As Cerebus said, it's largely unrelated to the mac
design.

From a marketing perspective, I do find it fascinating that consumers will
permit the brand image of Apple to bleed into made-up ideas about the
technical merits. For example, some consumers who believe Apple produces a
better LOOKING desktop may convince themselves that Apple produces more SECURE
operating system, based on the positive image they hold of Apple, but not
based on any specific technical information.

If you fear that she does
have some songs that still have the DRM in them, Itunes will convert them for
30 cents per song.

Back when itunes music was DRMed, I only bought it when someone gave me gift
cards or some other reason like the album was _really_ cheap and I didn't care
so much about the artists for my "collection". When itunes announced that
all songs could be upgraded to iTunes + (DRM free), it cost me about 24 dolalrs
to take verything in my library and make it non-DRM.

John Public: you are just restating what I said: security by obscurity. It's
like the difference between parking my car outside my house in rural Minnesota
and parking it on the street in Tijuana. The security features of my car might
be the same (although there are good arguements that OSX is superior to
Windows, especially compared to older versions of Windows), but putting a
Windows PC on the Internet is like parking your car in the worst neighborhood
in the world. You'd better hope that your security is pristine.

I think the number of people who buy tablets and not computers is *currently*
small, but will grow over time. My computer-phobic sister is a great example.
She had an MBP but never uses it because it scares her. I used to get calls
every 2 or three months with her in sheer panic mode because she dragged an
icon off the dock and was acting like she'd destroyed it FOREVER, and no amount
of explaining what a shortcut was helped.

With the iPad, there's nothing for her to 'break'. She runs her apps, she
prints her documents, she browses the web and reads her mail. She is happy.

That's it.

Then other folks decided to list stuff they use it for, so I mentioned why
those uses did not fit (I don't spend 2 hrs a day on a train, I don't have
kids, etc...) or didn't make any sense to me (ie watching movies at home, when
there's a 52" HDTV 6 feet away...or playing music when there's a 7.1 channel HD
Audio receiver 6 feet away that can stream my much-too-big-to-fit-on-an-ipad
music collection)

Hell, sometimes if my MacBook Air is closer, I'll just
use that. It's not as if the ipod _replaces_ it.

I use it when I am moving/traveling for movies and mags. Nothing cures a plane
or bus ride more than having a decent movie to watch on your own
personal screen. I never leave town without the ipad.

I actually skipped the ipad 2 because the delta wasn't great enough for me
in spite of the processor bump and camera and lighter design.
The ipad 3 with the greater resoltution and all the other previously
mentioned uprades pretty much makes this a must have as long as I can
put 1080p movies on it.

Again though, it goes back to the casual user. If you're spending $500 on a
desktop or $500 on a tablet, the flexibility and portablility of the tablet may
be much more appealing to a casual user than spending the money on the desktop.

Just because you're not the use case (and I'd argue that anyone with multiple
computers really isn't a target user of a tablet) doesn't mean that there are
not a lot of people who are.

For someone else, the idea of buying a computer, monitor and printer just to be
able to look something up and print it when they want to read it probably seems
dumb when they can just pull it up instantly. Or the idea that they would need
to sit down in front of the desktop PC to read an ebook from Amazon, when they
could just kick back on the couch with a tablet instead probably seems stupid.

Plus, you don't have to spend $500 on a tablet. You can get away with less.

Some people want/like paper, some (like me) hate it :)

WORF> got to disagree about the data plan, my iPad's wifi only and it works
great. I just download all my books, news, etc when I'm at home or work with
wifi, and then on the subway I'm network-less.

Feb 10, 2012 11:23 from WORF

Whereas I would think using a tablet in the kitchen to look up a recipe is a
perfect use.

If I'm cooking something I don't know my heart I've already got a paper copy
of it in front of me. No need for the tablet, I've got a really nice printer.

Feb 10, 2012 11:23 from WORF
....I am always amazed when people will buy things and then be afraid to use
them.
I don't know about most folks, but when I cook, I don't tend to make a mess.

Me neither. My wife is another story though. I don't normally care, because
if she makes the mess, she cleans it up. But "You spilled this broth on the
ipad (fouling the water tamper seals) so you owe me $500" probably won't go
over as easily as "You spilled some stuff on the stove, please wipe it up"

But really, if the only case for spending $500 on an ipad for the home is "to
reference recipies" I'm gonna suggest that's a really goofy solution compared
to a printed recipie.

Egregious> The plastic bag approach doesn't work for the iPad since it can't
sense your touch through that, and hence AFAIK you can't turn pages :) I use my
trusty old Kindle DX for that :)

A tablet in a big ziploc bag is amazingly convenient and resists most near
any spill. It's safer to read in the tub than a normal book unless you fall
asleep and drown, but in that case you have a bigger problem.

They're much more
robust than a paper mag ever would be and if they get sweaty/wet you just wipe
it down like any other machine.

See, I wouldn't let an ipad anywhere near the kitchen.

My wife would spill some crap on it.

I don't give a shit when she does that with a $5 cooking magazine.

A $500 tablet I'd give a shit about.

and if they even make a waterproof uber-otterbox type ipad case, I'd imagine it
makes it a lot less fun to actually use.

The light web browse, as I mentioned, was about the only thing the thinkpad
tablet we had ever got used for, but it wasn't much....

if it was any browsing requiring heavy keyboard use (discussion forums, etc)
I'd be using the laptop in the next room, or a desktop upstairs..... if it was
"look up how many teaspoons in a pint" it was way faster to do that on the
iphone in my pocket than even FIND the tablet...

The in-between, that happened to come up in the livingroom, was pretty
uncommon.

But yes, I agree, if one traveled a lot it'd be nice to have.... at home, I see
it collecting a fair amount of dust though... and my job doesn't really require
any travel...and when travelling on vacation I usually have better things to do
than surf the web in a hotel.

IMHO tablets in general (not just the iPad) are useful if:

1) Your use is mostly casual (ie couch, train, gym use for email, web, reading,
photos, etc.).
2) You have a data plan.

I have real computers, Phones, and TVs all over the place and we still manage
to use the 2 iPads in our house frequently.

The kids use it for web browsing, games and homework.

It's far more convenient for me to use than a laptop for use on the sofa for
light web browsing, etc. Same in the kitchen. It has replaced a bookshelf of
cook books.

Extremely useful while travelling to stay connected, but that has already been
discussed.

I'm kinda fascinated by all the write-ups I've seen with folks basically saying
"Meh" about the iPad. I think it all depends upon your needs. I spend ~2hrs a
day stuck on a subway and a bus, for me, the iPad has been *AWESOME*. I can
code (Textastic), read my book (Kindle), play a game, or if I'm feeling
creative compose some music or paint a picture.

All of that in s super small, super light device that fits into my book bag
effortlessly and can be operated with one hand while hanging on :)

so i have a phone now that has 1280x720 resolution, dual cores, and is pretty
much as powerful as the average tablet out there right now.
i have a motorola xoom tablet
and I have a thinkpad w520 laptop.

between the 3 devices, i rarely use the xoom. i bought it as a toy, when it
got the ICS update i used it for a while because it was fun to see how ICS
works on that vs on my phone.

but between the phone and laptop i have no use for the tablet other than a toy.

the phone is great for consumption. The laptop keyboard is far more useful
than a tablet keyboard for actually doing something.

that said, it helps that my phone is at least as powerful as my tablet (if not
more powerful).

If I didn't have a decent phone, i might be using the tablet a bit more
for random browsing on the couch.
