Yesteryear is considered the overall best episode, and it pretty much is. The
Time Trap, The Slaver Weapon are good. The Jihad is fun in a Mission:
Impossible kind of way (and it was written by Stephen Kendel, a MI writer).
Once Upon a Planet is kind of fun. More Tribbles, More Troubles is supposed to
be funny, but it's more of a Trouble With Tribbles greatest hits and the
botched cel coloring (pink Tribbles??) is very distracting. The Survivor kis
is also fairly good.

None of the others are really ground-breaking, and a lot are of the "Gee, lets
take advantage of animation to do [Cool Idea X]."

I'm repeating a question that originally asked in 1972 or 73, none of the
movies had been made yet, and I doubt the cartoon had either.  In any event,
the question dealt strictly wihthe TOS.

The "for whatever reason" was to cover the situations where Kirk did not leave
someone in command, but some was legally in command such as Fox.  AS I said
when I posted the question, I was skeptical about the M% being on the list, but
I know it was.  Don't remember if the school paper or radio station ran the
contest, but I do know they cited specific information to verify each name on
the list.  Was their dialogue in that episode that specified the computer was
in command?  I remember the commander of the attack force made some snide
comment about Kirk being useless or not in command.

So anyway, I'm sure there is at least one more name missing after you added the
commissioner.  I do remember the one most people missed was DeSalle, he was in
command just once, and I think he only appeared in a handful of episodes.

Well, the initial question was "regardless of the reason" not "a specific
military meaning." So we seem to have gone a little far afield...

Insofar as the M5 could be shut down at any time and was an experiment with
what was believed to be a computer rather than an AI,, I'd say it wasn't in
command by any specific military meaning. It was a really smart autopilot,
basically. By the same they knew it was a highly sophisticated AI, it had
pirated the ship.

Sorry, forgot to make my second point.  As of now, we appear to have identified
12 different individuals who legally commanded the Enterprise on TOS.  (Agree,
btw that animated series and movies don't count.)  Like I said originally, I
think the asnwer was 15, but in hindsight in might have been just 13.  Even if
that's the case, we'd still be missing at least one more.

One other point I'd forgotten about when this came up back in the 70s (before
Roddenberry came to campus as part of the "college lecture circuit"), there was
one guy who was fanatical that Dr. McCoy be included in the group.  The fact
that only line officers (not doctors, lawyers, chaplain etc.) can command
combat forces didn't sway this guy as he pointed out senior medical officer,
McCoy could relieve anyone of his/her command.  While that was true, McCoy
himself could not legally assume command, but he'd hear none of it.  Years
later, I saw an episode of TNG where Dr, Crusher was in command.  I remember
wondering if that guy from back in the 70s saw that episode.

USN warship is the ulimate authority abaord the vessel, but clearly must obey
those in his chain of command, up to and including the PotUS.  In the case of
the question I posed, Kirk must obey the orders of his superiors who "popped up
on a view screen", but Kirk is still in command of Enterprise.  He can delegate
the command authority to others, as can his chain of command as with the Fox
and the guy I couldn't remember.  Conversely, when others (Kelvins etc.) took
over the ship, they were not legally in command any more than pirates are
legally in command of ship they seize of Somailai.

I think the Memory Alpha entry is misleading. Chekov is indeed in charge of
navigating the Enterprise and making sure that the Klingons don't spot them.
Checking the transcripts, there's no "Chekov you have the conn" dialogue.

In fact, Kirk leaves the bridge early in the episode and says, "You have the
conn, Scotty." when he goes to sickbay to check on Spock. Later, it's Scott who
contacts Kirk on the planet and says that they'll be out of communicator range,
and Kirk who tells him that they'll arrange a rendezvous schedule later.

And that's all you hear from Chekov until later, when Spock is back on th
bridge and Chekov has a single line of dialogue.

I wouldn't consider movies and animated series "the original series."

Although Chekov was tasked with keeping the planet between Enterprise and the
Klingons in "A Private Little War," and he was in charge of that, there doesn't
seem to be anything indicating he was the commanding officer. Particularly
since Scott was there on the bridge with him. And while the positions are
intechangeable to some degree, wouldn't that be the helmsman's job? Or was that
when George Takei was busy filming Green Berets in season 2 and they gave
Koenig more screentime?

If you're going to consider Ambassador Fox the "captain" in "A Taste of
Armageddon," you might as well consider Commissioner Ferris in The Galileo
Seven as well. he does give Kirk the order to leave Taurus 5. "I now assume
authority granted me under title 15, galactic emergency procedure, and I order
you to abandon search."

I'm not convinced in either case, Fox or Ferris or any ambassador, that just
because they have the right to order Kirk or a subordinate/designated captain
to do something, that it makes them the "captain." They can command a captain,
but that doesn't make them "the captain."

OK, here's a question for long-time Star Trek (TOS) fans.  Not meant to be a
trivia question or a "gotcha", just looking for answers.

Through out the original series, how many different people commanded the
Enterprise, including acting commanders, regardless of the reason.  I remember
this question from my college days back in the 70s, I think the number was like
15 total.  I've got 11, anyone who can add others, I'd be interested.

bonus points store the second drive off-site... if you want to be
you-need-medication paranoid have a 3rd copy in a cloud-based solution which
runs $5/mo for as much space as you want.


I mean, if you were talking a LOT more data then RAID 5/6 might be worth
looking into just to use fewer drives, but not for a dinky 2TB that'll fit on
one drive...

've got about 18 TB of disk myself, mostly for movie/tv storage so I can just
stream everything over the network vs. using physical discs... that's big
enough to make raid 5/6 worth it... but yeah, more
probably ought go to hardware> or something :)

That's EXACTLY 200 DVDs... so more special features than I thought since the
films aren't in yet, but ok... All the movies through Nemesis is 20 discs
assuming all 2-DVD special editions...  All 2 more for the new film...


That's 222 DVDs.

1.1 TB if they averaged 5GB per DVD... If they were all 100% STUFFED to the
absolute MAX of double-sided DVDs it's 9.4GB per- which is still only 2.09 TB.


Since they're not going to all be 100% stuffed you can easily fit it all on one
2TB drive....which is 60-70 bucks... if you MUST have it backed up as well...
(which is a little odd since you have the physical DVDs as backup)... you can
just buy a second 2Tb drive for another 60-70 bucks.


Anyway, nowhere near 8-10TB...

That Star Trek ebook archive has floated around a few places.  It's rpetty much
all of the Trek paperbacks, including the old, early Blish stuff, on through
the early 2000s.  Included are the old Bantam novelizations (things like
Charlies Law, Galileo Seven, Mudd's Angels), up to the more recent.  It has all
the original series novels from the first one (the novelization of TMP) through
#115 (Ex Machina); Stargazer 1-6, Titan 1-2, the TNG series novels 1 (Ghost
Ship) through 98 (Death in Winter), DS9 1-47, Voyager 1-29, the New Frontier
novels 1-16, Enterprise novels 1-8, etc etc.  it includes the Captain's Table
books, the SCE books through #57, the Gateways series...
So there's a lot of decent Star Trek books in there.  Sure, some are turkeys. 
But others are pretty darned good.
Tehy're all in basic text (.txt) format only, no images, not even copyright or
title pages, cover images, anything.  Formatting is indifferent, because again,
they're text files.  But they're reasonably complete, and the actual novels
from (mostly) quality writers.
Needless to say, I have a copy... I forget where I got it though.

and I have to say they mostly suck. As much as I like the concept of ebooks, it
still can't guarantee quality of writing any more than traditional methods so
that "400 available online" is pretty much meaningless.

every warship in the Federation and Klingon empires, by superheating every
single weapon that they had. If they could superheat it, they could destroy it,
with enough explosions to destroy both empires.

Not to mention, even if the Organians could simply immobilize and  not blow up
every weapon, they could keep people from touching every non-weapon. being
unable to touch any mechanical device without receiving third-degree burns woul
effectively destroy both civilizations.

Douwd could give the Organians a run for their money. In fact, it rather
supports my statement and Danix's that Kevin was relatively ineffectual. All he
could do was destroy, implant psychic blocking (but not enough to alter
Picard's thoughts and make him decide to leave), and cast illusions. He could
do a lot of destroying, but the Organians were capable of superheating every
weapon aboard every ship in the Klingon and Federation armadas. Wouldn't haev
taken much more to make every ship, and every power generator, on every planet
blow up. Maybe less, since it would have taken less subtle means to do so.

By definition, you have to take what beings of deception say with a grain of
salt.

I think I noted that he had powers of destruction. Problem is, that and some
mediocre illusions that ultimate fooled no one is all he was shown to have.
Apparently he could neither create an illusion powerful enough to deceive a
bunch of marauders, create any kind of force field, teleport the colonists to
somewhere safe, or even cause all of the Husnocks' (sic) weaponry to superheat
to the touch, making it useless. All of which would fall within his pacifist
intentions. And the Organians were able to superheat two fleets' worth of
weapons, If they could do it and a Douwd couldn't.

Also, "immortal" has different definitions. The Immortals on Highlander are
immortal (never aging) but can still be killed.

The fact a Q can die comes from Star Trek Voyager's Death Wish, and the
character Quinn. Or at least he could strip himself of his omnipotence and
become human, which resulted in the same thing.

I liked V okay.  My issues with it were just basic continuity errors.  Like the
jetpack in the turbolift scene where Enterprise is show having some 200 decks
(or whatever).  Just things that don't make sense.

I had the same issue with the new Star Trek movie where the engineering room
looks like some Rube Goldberg project built in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory.

I loathed V.  Glad some of you likes it, but I just had a hard time with
everyone on the crew being so easily controlled, Spock suddenly having a
brother, and the like.  Pretty much the only character that got to shine in V
was Kirk.  And for me, Star Trek should be an ensemble.

Yes, they were "abducted", but in the end, Kirk and company
did go to see "God" of their own free will.
The movie displayed comraderie ("three grown men singing"), and a bit of comedy
"Scotty knocking himself out").

I know it didn't appeal to everyone.  Those who liked ST5 are few and far

Also, Roddenberry' original idea of finding the actual God would have been more
intersting than what we got, which is basically another kinda/sorta omnipotent
alien.

And three grown men singing "Merrily We Row Along", and Scotty knocking himself
out, still remain the epitomy of the series. even Spock's Brain has a certain
dignity compared to those.

is what Trek is about. They explored, they went where they hadn't gone
before...and while not a great movie, I've seen worse Trek

I liked "Star Trek V".  To me, it was what Trek was about.  They went where no

Actually, that pretty much explains it...

It's one of History Channels several hoarding/picking/buying shows (and like
the one that was on SyFy for a few episodes). The two guys (I think they're out
of Iowa) tour the country, finding folks that have hoarded a bunch of old
memorablia. Toys in the barn, old auto signs, arcade games, stuff like that.
They ooh and ah over them, then they browbeat the guy into selling it to them
for the best bargain.

Pawn Stars is another similar show, although it's kind of the other way. The
father-and-son(s?) run a pawn store, we see people bring stuff in, and then we
get the whole story of them verifying wha's coming in is accurate and then the
owners haggling to buy them.

So, we don't mind a small home renovation project every now and then, and this
is one we're seriously considering. Instructables has posted a step-by-step
guide on installing sliding doors which are powered by an air compressor, and
which look super cool. As you'll see in the video which is after the break,
it's a pretty simple idea, which requires a pretty fair amount of work, but the
results are very impressive. The sliding doors are controlled by a panel switch
and have a key which can lock them open or shut, and the door also boasts a
vent above it for air ventilation after operation. Yes, we actually want one of
these.

In fairness,when it came to producing shows, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez were
kind of industry outsiders. They stood behind shows like Star Trek and Mission

Paramount and NBC and industry outsiders like Lucille Ball.
