Star Trek Online>
Anyone playing this now that it is free to play? I started yesterday and I
actually like it quite a bit. I like how the fighting system works in the star
ships. And the ground based play is easy to control too. And it runs good on my
Asus notebook at 720p with everything on high.

Miser - interesting. I'll again, have to double check myself, this evening.

Hit 42 on my Sith Marauder last night. PVP is quite enjoyable, and a relatively
painless way to level AND get rather good gera. A lot of folks pick up the PVP
purples before doing hard mode operations and then the raids (which I've no
info on yet. heh).

The 1.1 patch that's coming up appears to fix several pretty glaring issues,
not the least of which being the lack of PVP level brackets. Yeah, there's the
Bolster that helps sub-50's compete, but their gear is SO far ahead of that of
non-50's that there's no real competition.

It's definitely getting my eyeballs right now. ONce I get my max gear @50 that
may change, but...

So far, I've not yet found another
cab, so Taris could be a pretty big place.

I'm considering rolling another character at some point so interested in
hearing what server you guys are playing on. Could be fun to try and establish
a "base" server for ISCAites. I'm trying to play a light
character but goofed a couple of times and have some dark side points.

Things it seems to affect:
- The little meter on your character sheet, like the one we had in KOTOR.
- Your ability to buy items from light/dark side vendors.
- Dialogue options and how NPCs react to you.

There may be more to it but those are the things I've noticed.

SO how many people we have here playing SWTOR?

I'd love to join but it isn't affordable for me at this point. I lost my nice
cushy job due to a contract expiring and my new job I make 33% less. My laptop
(no room for a desktop) needs replaced and is running hot just surfing the web.
My wife is due to have our second child in February. Needless to say money is
tight and replacing a laptop and adding a monthly $15 subscription is more than
we can handle.
Sadly.

Yeah, the dialogue options have kept me very entertained so far. Also, certain
dialogue options will gain (or lose) you respect with your companions, get you
light/dark side points, and have a pretty interesting effect on the story in a
lot of places. It really does feel like a KOTOR MMO to me.

Outlaw, I understand. I felt much the same way when I was agonizing over
whether to buy the game. I am very put off by WoW at this point.. the only
reason I could see ever playing it again is the PvP, and even that gets pretty
old.

SWG.. pre-CU, that is, was definitely more my type of game. I loved it that I
could set up harvesters to earn my character wealth while I wasn't even logged
in, plus the sense of community with houses, shops and then player cities. I
hated the CU with a passion, as I gather most people did. At least there's an
open source effort going on right now to bring back the game pre-CU with no
monthly cost. When I played it last, it still had a ways to go with
development, though, and I'm not sure if Sony has sent their lawyers after them
yet (or if that's even going to happen). Anyway, I knew going in that TOR was
going to be more combat-oriented than SWG but gave it a shot anyway, and so far
it's still been a pretty fun trip.

Ok thanks for the updates and descriptions. It really does sound way too
WoWey for me. It's too bad they killed SWG the way they did, I think I would
have had fun playing that before all the changes, but back then I was so
anti-gaming, and now after playing WoW, not sure I want to get back doing
something like that again. But if SWTOR was more a freestyle game as mentioned
SWG was more like, I would seriously consider trying it out and getting sucked
back in...

(Miser/86492) GA>

GA>
Well it's entirely possible for the planet to serve multiple level ranges.
Next time I log in I'll get the name of the Spaceport where I'm docking and the
general direction of the missions I have thus far and share. I'm pretty
curious now. :)

AY>
SWTOR feels, to me, like WoW except Star Wars. The major differences are the
much more interesting mission dialogues, companion system and space combat.
The mission dialogues are awesome.. in WoW, I just got to the point (probably
at about level 3) where I would just click the guy with the symbol over his
head, click accept, and go kill 10 mobs. TOR draws you in more with missions
since _every_single_one_ has associated dialogue. Sure, it's often the same
kill/retrieve/save my loved one type missions, but they're far more
interesting.

The companion system lends itself well to solo players such as myself. The
"pets" in other games were typically lower level and sucked at tanking, healing
or providing other roles you'd typically find in a PC group. SWTOR excels
here. To make it better, you can also develop relationships with your
companions and interact with them in ways that you may have if you played
KOTOR.

Space combat so far is just meh.. I honestly liked the space combat in SWG
better, but that's probably because it was based on the Freelancer engine.
I've only done one space quest, and haven't upgraded my ship much at all, so
maybe this will get more interesting later. I've also only run through one PvP
(the football-type one) and I thought it was pretty damn awesome. Perhaps not
on the level of Alterac Valley necessarily but far, far more fun than
commentary on TOR PvP elsewhere had led me to believe.

Ok.. I know this is a very subjective question... but..
Is SWTOR worth getting into?
I'm not looking for a definitive answer, just your personal experience.
Comparing to WoW would be good to help me understand.. the reason why I ask is
because I've heard a lot of people saying it's not that great, but more
recently it seems like I'm hearing people like it.

Taris is the swampy
planet that was at one point as populated as Coruscant but was bombarded by
Darth Malik 300 years ago and is struggling to recover. Maybe you're thinking
of Tython? I sometimes get those confused name-wise..

Wow, really? I wouldn't have expected such a huge range for one planet. Ord
Mantell was something like 1-13 and Coruscant was 13-18. Taris is really
18-37 on up..?

I went to Taris just long enough to round up a few missions. One thing I'm
digging about TOR is the environments. The planets really do seem unique and
not just in appearance, but also backstory, characters, etc.

TOR>
Ran the Esseles Flashpoint solo last night. As a level 18 Commando (Combat
Medic) and with my companion Aric, it was a breeze. I think I got maybe 5xp
for completing it (it was grey by 18, which explains the ease) but the story
and gameplay were pretty good and I enjoyed it. Also plenty of good loot. I'd
suggest doing it with others sooner than 18 if XP or social points are
important to you, as I didn't get much of either. But I'm a little ahead of
the curve at the moment (new Taris quests are green) so no biggie. Oh, and it
took probably just a touch over two hours.

Storywise it points you to wher eyou should be going, but if you hover over the
planets it tells you the appropriate level for questing. All planets have a
special bonus series at the end. Some are level appropriate some you have to
come back for, example hoth bonus is 47 I was 42 when I left so I couldnt get
it.

The zones are pretty much planet-based. As a soldier, I started on Ord Mantell
which is something of a newbie area. Missions are assigned by level and will
typically send you off in the right direction for mobs that you are able to
handle. Once I was done there, my story missions led me to Coruscant. Same
thing there. Since you are assigned missions by level, you'll rarely run into
missions you can't handle solo. The only exception would be epic missions,
which are best handled at a higher level (ie when they appear as green or grey
in your mission log) or with some help from other players. I've been able to
handle a couple of epic missions with just my companion, but they can be very
tough, especially for certain player/companion combinations.

Star Wars Galaxies was definitely more of a "free form" RPG in that you could
go to Endor and try to dodge the high level mobs to set up harvesters right out
of the gate. SWTOR guides you better along the path into easier encounters.
Granted, I think you can still go to the various planets at a certain point in
TOR, you just don't have as much reason to.

So how about the "zones" or how does that work? Is it based upon your level
and you go here or there depending on your level for quests or is it more of an
open space type thing. I seem to recall my friend telling me about the old
Star Wars Galaxy where you could go from planet to planet and there were quite
a number of them (though I am recalling this from years ago), but I thought it
wasn't as zone like as WoW was...

Well torhead had a great article comparing the two. Really doing quests are
easy, there are map markings of where you should go for the quests etc, that
show the general areas etc. Be aware that you will usually get bonus quests
when you kill mobs in the area ( kill 20 or 10 of these), that can be 2-3 steps
as well while you are doing the main quest as well.

Gear is alot easier as well, you will get modable pieces that will last many
levels helm, chest, legs, gloves.

Wrist and waist will be ones you upgrade the most. You also get implants, ear
pieces, and two relic or trinket slots. Weapons of course as well.

Most items you will get from commodation vendors, you can get the tokens from
completing quests.

TOR>

Basically goes like this, you have single instances for class and quests that
are designed for solo but can be done with a group if need be. Then heroic
quests which involve anywhere from 2-4 people (think group quests in wow).
Flashpoints are instances, most of em are 30 minutes or less. I have only done
Boarding Party and Foundry so far, decent loot.

Crafting> You choose one main and then 2 others that should compliment them. I
have Cybertech as a main. Think a cross between jc and engineering. I then
have scavaging ( which is a gathering ability with missions as well), and
underworld trading. You can get cloths, recipes, materials for crafting and
gifts to give to your companions to raise rep. Some recipes are learned only
from reverse engineering (think breaking down crafted items to regain some
parts to reuse for other items), some crafting quests are rare drops.

Hit 41 today, wouldve been 50 eons ago but the holidays and related things set
me almost 2 weeks back. Not that I am in a rush, enjoying the story.

I and the ANN folks are on Mind Trick if anyone is interested.

I'm not entirely sure yet. I think some crafting materials are rare, and
therefor hard to get from missions. Those are probably expensive on the AH? I
have read that the price of mats on the AH is pretty low at the moment. You
also skill up the other skills by sending your guy to collect mats, and the
nission-based ones (Diplomacy, Investigation, etc) slowly up your light/dark
side points based on what missions you choose.

That's all I got?

Thanks for the clarification, SSJ. As far as I can tell, the missions you send
your companions on for materials appear to have a cost associated with them.
Is there any real benefit to "buying" materials this way over just getting them
cheaper off the auction house? I could see where this option could be more
useful once you get to the tougher materials, but the low end materials I've
been crafting with are very cheap off the auction house as opposed to ~ 200
creds per material (?) on the NPC missions.

Miser>

You get one of each type (gathering, crafting, mission). They are tied to you,
not your companions as far as I can tell. I think you can just send multiple
companions out to do tasks for them? You don't get new tradeskills with each
companion. Each companion does have bonuses for different tradeskills.

There is an AH, and yes, the gathering professions are like mining in that you
can find things around the world to 'mine' for materials. You can also not do
that and just send your companion off to go get stuff. He runs away, and comes
back later with goods.

SSJ>
Thanks for the information about Esseles. Sounds like I may be able to take it
at this point. As far as skills, I thought you got to pick new skills for each
companion. I now have two companions but only have three skills (one crafting
and two "foraging" types). So for crafting I chose biomed.. lets me craft
healing stims and booster stims. Is that the only crafting skill I will ever
have? Or should I be getting more as I get additional companions? The latter
is what I had assumed from what I've read, but I now have two companions and
both have access to biomed only.

Miser>

The crafting is working as it is supposed to. You choose your crafting skills,
and then send your companions off to work at them. So your companions have no
trade skills of their own. They do have bonuses for specific ones, it seems?

Esseles> I just did this over the weekend with my wife, and our two companion
NPC's. It never felt very tough, though I had to heal some on the last boss. We
were 13-14'ish? Maybe you can do it at 18 with your one companion, I'm really
not sure.

It does take a bit of time to go through. The instance is more like a mission
than a wow raid. Think of it as one long TOR quest where everything is inside
an instance bubble, with chat options affecting the outcomes and everything.

I've had the
"Esseles" Flashpoint mission in my back pocket for a while now. It says it
needs a group. Is there a level at which I could try and solo it? While I've
grouped up a few times for tougher missions so far, I've been playing mostly
solo and would really like to avoid entangling missions that keep me glued to
the game for hours at a time.

My commando just hit level 18. I got my ship and a protocol droid companion.
I can't seem to get any new crew crafting abilities, though--the droid just has
the same skills as my first companion.

I'm pretty much done with WoW (see the last post I made about LFR), but I spent
most of my last time on Malygos with a bunch of my coworkers. (The Malygos
where the ISCA Horde-side guild was, once upon a time.) I still have a few
toons on whisperwind, but they are all pretty low level.

I did just pick up SWTOR to try. It's an OK game as a MMO goes. The combat is a
little funky and unresponsive in some ways. The game shines for playing with
people you know. The leveling stories, fully voiced quests/instances, and
difficulty level so far seems perfect. I've been having a blast duo'ing the
game with my wife so far, with just a little over a weekend's worth of time in.
That's not a lot of time to base an opinion on, but it has been a lot more fun
than I was expecting.

Where are all the ISCA people playing SWTOR at, that are playing? I'm on
Canderous Ordo at the moment. Or uh, something close to that.

As I was "quitting" I recall IA was really going more raiding guild and
merging with some other one. Seemed by that time what made IA what it was
had already fallen apart.

I gave everything to the guild and had my characters deleted.

I had one mid-40s character on a different server. Had I not had her, I
doubt I ever would have gone back. But because she existed I did return over
a year later on Zul'jin. I've been on and off there since. Usually on for a
couple of months then off for who knows how long. I still enjoy my time
there but find I get so addicted to it I'm not doing other things I ought to
be.

WoW gold> I was the sole inscriptionist on our server (med pop) for the
horde side. People including gold farmers couldn't keep up with me
undercutting them. I had a few great AH mods and even had a Chinese gold
farmer congratualte me because he had given up trying to compete. So before
the whole inscription change, I had maxed out already and would have to
transfer profits to my other 85s. After the change and the expansion, I just
made the lock and priest inscription ones and those generated a lot of gold too
before eventually it all slowed down due to the permenant nature of the
inscriptions.

The other part was my JCing which I did. I was a mining fiend so always just
spent my time mining and JCing everything and buying cheap ore and stuff on the
AH. So combining Inscription with the JC and mining I got my fortunes...

Cerebus>
Playing new content of the new races that I haven't played a dozen times
already like I have the vanilla and burning crusade races might have awakened
some nostalgia in me. But instead I logged in and was forced to play noob
zones I've played far too many times before and I was bored by level 3. I
spent more time installing the game than I did playing it.
Maybe I'd be snagged by a "come back to us" freebie where I can play my
then-level-capped-raid-ready toons again but I only got one of those and it was
too soon after I unsubscribed that I was still burned out on the game.

I am really only playing two of my toons now - one has over 30k and the other
over 50k. I do not buy much gear so that helps, but it is mainly the
professions they have I think. Mining is very profitable at cap if you learn
some routes and run them daily, it does not take much time, and there is a tool
that gives you a chance for volatiles, which helps also. Enchanting I mostly DE
what I get from soloing dungeons (which I enjoy) and sell the mats - makes
quite a bit, you'd be surprised what slightly older stuff can sell for.
Tailoring and engineering are not very profitable, for me anyway.
Perhaps it is my servers, but pick professions where you can sell mats to
others, find out where to farm the stuff, and profit.

How do you accumulate that much gold? I make enough to sustain myself on the
AH, but I never have that much.. I typically have 20-25k acrossed my 5 toons at
any particular time... then again, I don't spend lots of time on it.. I
basically do 2 things.. buy gems, cut them and auction them.. and I get mats,
create high level enchants and sell those... all in all it only takes me 10
minutes per day

It has become easy to accumulate a lot of gold. However, on my servers at least
the typical prices for the high-end stuff - mats, gears, etc. - have gone
correspondingly insane, so I do not think it is any easier to buy stuff if you
have 85-level characters. If you wanted to twink out at say 69 or lower it
would be pretty easy if bankrolled by an 85 who can make that easy gold.

Speaking of WoW gold, what's it like now? I remember being capped out at the
216 or 213k a year ago and then remember they got rid of the cap. I had about
500k between my 5 85's before I quit. I should have transfered it all to one
toon to see if they did have a gold cap. Of course when I quit last Jan, it
seemed like getting gold became super easy anyways so the whole gold making fun
was gone after the expansion...

Yes that's the one I got, the "Come back" one. I know a number of people
when I used to play that would pop back into the game after a few months for a
short time because they had a 10 day thing like that and then leave and 6
months later return and so on. So maybe I'll just have to check it out in the
email and see.

But yes, getting you back in on your 85 and re-hooked, means there's a chance
you'll want to start playing again. I know one friend that did that last year
and ended up paying for a 6month membership...

Yep, if you just want to ez-mode it, LFR is the way to go, it also still brings
out the idiots so theres that too. I did it on my warrior and paladin, and its
a nice option to have, but still allows folks who want a challenge to have
normal, and heroic modes, with better gear to still wave the e-peen around.

We do a lfr on friday nights, jsut as a guild thing since most everyone has
moved over to TOR, its fun because its nice and laidback for us.

Yeah, LFR is the answer to, "Why the Hell did I pay all this money to Blizz to
not see any endgame content because I'm not l33t enough?" And honestly, I
think it's the best answer that could be given in the circumstances. I didn't
quite "get" that side of the argument until RL put me permanently on that side.
Now I have a healthy respect for multiple paths to "success" for multiple
people. For all the issues w/ WoW, I feel that Blizz has done the best to tray
to address all the different niche markets in an MMORPG.

I am thinking of picking up SWTOR at some point. No definite plans yet.

I do however, have a hilarious WoW story to share. I got my Diablo 3 beta
invite a couple of weeks ago. (Fun, not too much hotness, maybe it will be
better live). In trying to log in, I realized I had lost my authenticator, and
couldn't log into battlenet. I used the new web tool, disabled the
authenticator, and happily played diablo 3.

Two nights after first logging into Diablo 3 my son (who still plays wow)
walked in to tell me I had just logged in to WoW. Obviously I had been hacked.
So I logged in, and hit the website, and slapped a spare authenticator I had on
the account. (Had one sitting around - could have just used the phone too.)

The hackers had been on my account for less than a few hours, had only hurt one
character, and had scroll of res'd and put 30 days of game time on my account.
I put in a ticket explaining it all, got my stuff restored, and blizzard did
eventually remove the 30 days game time. Which is good, because I am sure it
was from a stolen card number.

However, in the 10 days of free time I had, I went from not playing for almost
a year, to killing death wing.

LFR is ridiculous. You basically just follow the mob of people around, and hit
whatever they are hitting until the boss dies. Yay, I got to see deathwing die,
and a bunch of terrible graphic cut scenes.

Yay hackers?
By the way, the only time I got was from the scroll of res. Pretty funny stuff.

(Miser/86436) Here is a response regarding the undecideds:

Here is a response regarding the undecideds:

"The undecided came from the pre launch of the website. Since TOR has not
released any data for "in game" players I cant post anything nor anyone else.
Yes I could build something for the honor system, but unless "everyone" updated
their character the data would be inconsistent and way to hard to manage. These
stats give you a basic idea, but with a week under the belt these stats are
already getting old. As soon as I can get access to real data, I will simply
get that info and give members the ability to manage their own character, but
until then this is as close as you are going to get :)"

Got my Commando specialization and up to level 13 as of last night. So far,
the game is very engaging and keeping my interest. The sob stories and missing
persons type quests are getting a little old, but if anything that just makes
me want to roll a dark side character. :) Still have yet to play PvP, though
I have a quest to do so. I'm wondering if the rungs work similarly to WoW.. I
would prefer to be the top level of whatever PvP server I go into. For
example, I think the first battleground in WoW was for level 10-15 players, and
you tended to get mopped up when trying it at 10.

The companion system seems very cool to me. I like how you have standing with
them and how mine jumps in with comments now and then. I actually had to go
back into the mission area that I assume most people complete before getting
theirs and he still had something to say.. I thought that was pretty cool.

That's funny how the sith nation seems to be dominating the top. What's the
Undecided Empire thing? Can you just be an undecided or multi class that's for
the empire and not have a class?

I figure there would be a lot more Bounty Hunters actually and Jedi
Knights...

(Miser/86434) SW:TOR>

SW:TOR>
So the wife gave me the thumbs up to pick this up yesterday. Between dinner,
installation and updating, I didn't get to play until a little after 10:30pm.
I crashed to desktop three times (once during character creation and twice
fresh off the boat) and after some troubleshooting I found that it didn't
happen when I disabled SLI. Not sure why it doesn't seem to like SLI (New
Vegas was fine with it on) but oh well. The game still runs fine with just one
Geforce 8800.

I decided to play a trooper since it seems like a pretty basic class as well as
one of the least played classes (see link below). Also, I played a commando in
SWG primarily and thought it fitting to try one out here. Got up to level 7
and before I knew it, it was 2:30am. It was at that point that I realized I
had a pretty bad case of swamp ass that Nathan Fillion warned me about and
decided if I was ever going to get up in the morning, I'd have to go to bed.

So far, so good. The missions are definitely more engaging than any other MMO
I've played--I now see why the game is ~16GB to install. It runs smoothly
(absent SLI) and looks very nice! Apart from training skills, I've been saving
most of my money for the inventory upgrade and am very close to getting it now.
When do you get your ship and start accumulating crew? Also, when do you get
access to the PvP warzones?

I picked a PvE server because I didn't want to get ganked while doing PvE
missions or have to wait through a queue. Anyone had any PvP experience yet,
good or bad? As far as my earlier comment, here's an interesting link which
seems to show the class spread both for the whole game and individual server
zones.

http://swtorprogress.com/members.php

Cerebus> It's a big deal for minors as they don't have credit cards. And oddly
enough, it seems that even with a time card applied the system still won't let
you in without a credit card (even though it is supposed to).

Clock starts counting down as soon as you redeem your product code for the
first 30 days though, even if it won't let you play because of no CC.

On the upside, the absolute CC requirement may be a glitch as I've been in
contact with EA support and even they can't figure out why it's still refusing
to let me in. I've got the game and a time code attached to my account, yet no
dice.

Now granted, my personal reason for not wanting to attach a CC is probably an
edge case, but there are quite a few folks out there who can't/won't use a CC
and want to play.

I think it's pretty silly and petty of them. I mean, if someone wants to play
the game for 30 days for $60, more power to the developers, right? And then
they've got the hooks in you to jump back in at any given time for $15. Given
that these types of games are pretty much impossible to pirate, I fail to see
any good reason for the policy.

How is combat handled in game? Is it just the typical "taking turns whacking
each other until someone runs out of hit points" or something more? I'm going
to look into the races/classes today.. I hope SWG hasn't set my standards too
high on that front.

SWG>
Yeah, the fact that now you can just simply become a jedi without any effort
involved (or respec to a jedi if you have existing characters) turned a lot of
people off. That, and as someone else mentioned the dropping/retuning of a
number of classes. The famous Combat Upgrade effectively killed the game. For
what it's worth, there is a movement to resurrect a pre-CU version of it on
free servers, which has made a lot of headway. If you liked the game and want
to give it another run, it might be worth a shot. I played it for a while but
decided to let it get a little more developed before continuing.

Anyone have any comments on The Old Republic? Is it the usual $15/month? I
see that it's out now but am hesitant to take on another pay-to-play game. The
new Tribes might be worth forking out the one-time $30 though..

Yeah, the WoW level grind is not bad at all. Still a bit slow in the 60-70
range compared to the earlier levels, but they have really made it a LOT
easier to get to the 60s.

You want a level grind -- LoTRO gets very grindy. At least it feels that way
to me. I still get on and play every month or two for a few days and just
can't seem to keep going because it is such a grind.

Played DCUO for a week or so. Was enjoying it -- for being free I am not too
heartbroken that I haven't done more. Something to throw on every now and
again and beat up some bad guys.

I was enjoying the SWTOR beta weekend -- just don't have the money for a pay
to play MMO right now.

It used to take several months to hit 60 - it was quite an accomplishment
actually. No mount until 40, not many abilities until 20s or 30s, no xp in
battlegrounds, you actually had to rest your character once in a while to keep
the bonus xp going. Leveling in WoW is a cake walk today.

Well yeah, but the difference is there is still a large user base for WoW.
When STG changed their thing, it dropped off almost immediatly and became a
virtual ghost world in a very short time. WoW still had a ton of people,
though not as much "Hard Core", but it didn't just totally drop down dead as
STG apparently did...

That pretty much sums up what Blizzard is doing to WoW. Most of the unique
abilities for a class are now available in some form to the other classes.
Professions are mostly pointless, which was not always true. Anybody can get
decent epic gear for PvP and to a lesser extent PvE, so now nobody cares about
your skill just your ilevel. It was a much more interesting game in earlier
releases. I was never hardcore, maybe 15 hours a week, and it is even getting
bland for me. I probably just need to move on.

Well from what my friend had informed me, they made
it so anyone could become a jedi which pissed off all those that were already
or close to becoming one, so they lost a huge base that way. Then they took all
the many professions they had and lumped them all into just a small few, whch
pissed off even more people. There were a lot of other things as well, but
those were two big ones that he said it wasn't worth playing and it was no
longer fun...

Secret World http://www.thesecretworld.com/ is some new game that supposedly
will be free to play. Kind of like Fallout/Wow mix or something. Though there
is no leveling system (so no level grinding) and no classes, rather skill
points and stuff or something. Don't know much about it, just had a friend
mention it looked kind of good...

Yes, the Star Trek MMO is going free to play.... don't remember when exactly,
but it is coming.

Been playing DCUO on my PS3 the last few days. I'm entertained enough to
keep at it for a bit, but it isn't nearly as compelling as others have been.

Still wish there were another game that had a crafting system like Horizons
did. I played that game TO craft.

Not really, what sucks is the other folks who get hosed on the run. Sometimes
you get another tank right away, sometimes its forever. I think they did it for
healers too, but not sure on it.

LFR> Free loot. Did it on my dk ( my pc cannot handle 25 mans framrate at this
point, but managed to make it through), one shot everythign except the las
tboss which we two shot. Won glove token, and bracers off first boss.

New 5 mans are nice and short, and with a decent group are a breeze. Good loot
and neat storyline.

(Atreyu/86387) DCUO>

DCUO>
so, given this a couple of days and finding it a pleasant distraction. No
crafting or gathering per se, but there is a lot of hidden things to find that
help you gain extra points and/or styles to play with. Impressed enough to buy
the DLC for hard light constructs and 6 characters. But I have to say that the
limit of 2k cash is very limiting. I maxed that out in just an hour of play
time while levelling. Makes it tough to put stuff on the AH because all that
money is just going to get escrowed pretty quickly. So, haven't had any qualms
with each level going to the AH to buy a weapon or armor piece just to burn
through money.
Biggets hardship right now is trying to figure out how/where to put talent
points. Not knowing how many points I'll be getting and being limited to 6
Specials is pretty weird. Also, there doesn't seem to be a website that is
good for knowledge of that sort. No Elitist Jerks/Wowinsider type of site to
visit and get good infromation to base anything on.
I have been playing PvP server (surprised though that there is an option to
jump from pvp to pve in game) and been attacked a few times. I think though
that my Razer Mouse has really helped me out on that with faster access to the
hot keys. At lvl 12 I was able to take out a lvl 15 player with just a few
panic moments :-D

Got some nice stuff too

http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/whisperwind/Elini/feed

Hrm, doesn't list the agi boots I won, but sold for 10k.

So happy I got the weapon: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/item/71355
So happy I killed the final raid boss for a given patch, during the
patch (instead of after). yeah, i know it was nerfed, but still.

MoP

They had better give us an 11th slot. I'm not deleting one of my toons
to make a Monk (though if I could, I might change my rogue or hunter).

I couldn't bring myself to pay for more than the first
month back when I first tried it. However, they got crushed by traffic
yesterday, and their servers were down due to F2P demand. I guess that'll
probably kill it for a lot of people - doh!

Regardless, I'll probably try to log in again soon. It played more like a
console game than a PC game and was generally fun, but I just wasn't feeling
two subscriptions at the time.

The only reason I even tried it was I was hoping to
check out the worgen and goblin starting areas but I really had little
expectation of it working.
(Atreyu/86374) WoW MoP>

WoW MoP>
So, having thought on this for the week overall I'm a little disappointed. I
stopped WoW back in July due to work and lack of raiding/activity in guild.
Thought about going back, but not really motivated. Was hoping Hallow's end
woujld get a large revamp but instead it just got a small twist to it.
Then I read the Mists preview stuff, hoping to get excited again. But it just
left me feeling very blah. Pandas seem cool, and the monk class may be
interesting. Although the monk class I'm afraid will suffer the DK syndrom of
you'll be queing for a dungeon and have 4 monks and 1 other with none of the
monks able to tank and/or heal but queuing up for that anyways.
But, all in all, there was nothing in the previews for MoP that got me really
excited. Lich King got me excited because that was a cool storline hook.
Deathwing looked cool, but have to be honest that it hasn't engaged me like I
had hoped it would. And the pandas just seem too open ended at the moment with
no real hook.
/sigh

I've gotta agree with SSJones here. Most people I know only use one or two
passwords for everything. So if you use the same password for WoW as you do
for a less reputable site someone might snag it. Especially if your login
there is the same as it is for WoW.

---

Guess nobody's on Zul'jin, eh? Oh well.

Been goin crazy getting some of my crafting skills up. Got my alchemist to
level 50 today and went from 300-375 in about as long as it took to mail
herbs from the bank, buy vials and the new recipes. If only enchanting,
blacksmithing and jewelcrafting were that easy. HA!

The only way they hack your WoW account is through Trojan keyloggers or AddOns
(which install/run Trojan keyloggers). It isn't going to happen through brute
force.

(Angus Young/86371) Mr Tinker>

Mr Tinker>
Obviously if you have the password file it's easier. But that's not normally
the case. The discussion was derived from the discussion of a hacked WoW
account and what kind of password you need to protect against brute force
attacks. The actual quote:
"the only protection against brute force on user side is lonnnnng passwords"
And my point is that a 6 character password is long enough to really prevent
a brute force attack on a game server like WoW. The tries per second are
going to be so low that it will take forever to get any real password. So,
I would hardly call 6 characters 'lonnnnng'

MoP>

WoW free since Febuaryish. Not returning for pandas, hahaha.

Password Cracking, How Did I Get Hacked?>

Most likely source for getting your account hacked outside of the normal
virus-y ways is that you used the same password, with the same email address
attached to it on another website or forum somewhere on the internet. Security
on support and discussion forums is pretty lean usually. Use a different
password for anything you care about, than the one you use for 'public' sites.

how many tries per second do you think you could accomplish over a local
network, much less the internet? Aside from the 7 or 8 characters, you also
have the TCPIP header which adds something like 20 bytes or something... so
let's say 32 byte packets (which is probably low) and you have them coming and
going from the server... so 64 bytes per try... even if you were on gigabit
ethernet and there was no other traffic (which again is not going to happen)
you would get 1000000000 bits/s, or 125000000 bytes/sec or 1,953,125 tries per
second... insane slow... and now even a 6 character password is probably too
much.
