Jim Tressel is out as head coach at The Ohio State after 10 seasons and a
106-22 record. He departs amid a major controversy involving several of his
players and a memorabilia-for-tattoos scheme that Tressel allegedly helped
cover up in an NCAA inquiry.

Tressel was scheduled to sit a 5-game suspension at the beginning of next
season, along with the players involved in the scheme, including QB Terrell
Pryor.

MILAN, Italy -- David Beckham will miss the World Cup and most if not all the
Los Angeles Galaxy season after tearing his left Achilles tendon Sunday while
playing for AC Milan.

His international career for England is all but over. It remains to be seen how
much he'll have left for the Galaxy and Major League Soccer.

"He will miss the World Cup for sure," a person familiar with the injury told
The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because an official
announcement had not been made. The person said it was likely the 34-year-old
midfielder will play again.

Beckham was injured without getting hit during AC Milan's 1-0 Italian League
win over visiting Chievo Verona.

With only a few minutes remaining and the score 0-0, Beckham was by himself
with the ball at his feet, shifted his weight and reached a hand down to his
left heel. Beckham then stood up and snapped his wrists like he was breaking a
twig in half in a gesture to show the AC Milan bench he knew the tendon was
broken.

Visibly in pain and in tears, Beckham went to the sideline for medical
attention, leaving Milan a man short because all three substitutes had been
used.

"He felt the muscle begin to come up, which is a typical symptom when you break
an Achilles' tendon," Milan coach Leonardo told Sky. "This is a real blow."

Sky reported that Beckham said, "It's broken, it's broken," when he came off.

Club physician Jean Pierre Meersseman told Italy's Sky TV that Beckham will fly
to Finland, where he will be treated by specialist surgeon Dr. Sakari Orava.

"He'll go to Finland tomorrow and will be operated on probably tomorrow
afternoon or Tuesday morning," Meersseman said.

While Beckham has not been a starter for England in recent matches, he was
likely to make the World Cup roster as a reserve and looked forward to the
high-profile June 12 matchup against the United States -- and Galaxy teammate
Landon Donovan. Although no longer a top player, Beckham was still useful for
his free kicks and crosses, especially when England needed second-half goals.

And for many, he was the most-known soccer player in the world, a fashion icon
with a celebrity wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. A 2002 movie was
even named after him, "Bend it Like Beckham."

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was on his second loan stint
to AC Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy as he looked to boost his chances of making
England coach Fabio Capello's 23-man World Cup roster. With no chance to play
in the World Cup, his international career is likely over after 17 goals and
115 appearances, second in English history behind only goalkeeper Peter
Shilton's 125 matches from 1970-90.

Beckham was England's captain from November 2000 through the 2006 World Cup. He
was due back with the Galaxy after the World Cup.

"He'll probably be out for five or six months," AC Milan vice-president Adriano
Galliani told Sky. "I saw him really suffering. In the changing room I hugged
him and told him that if he wants he can join us next year, too."

It was yet another blow for Major League Soccer, already facing the threat of a
players' strike ahead of the season opener on March 25. Beckham is the league's
highest-paid player with a $32.5 million, five-year contract and its biggest
draw.

"We just received the information about David's unfortunate injury," MLS
commissioner Don Garber said. "We wish him a speedy recovery."

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said it was too early to tell exactly how long Beckham
will be out. He didn't want to discuss the impact the injury would have on Los
Angeles' season. He wouldn't blame the injury on the loan.

"Players get hurt whether they're on loan or not," he said. "Injuries are
unfortunately part of the game."

Capello and his England assistant Franco Baldini spoke with Beckham on the
telephone to offer best wishes, according to British news agency The Press
Association.

In April 2002, Beckham broke a bone in his left foot during a European
Champions League game against Spain's Deportivo La Coruna. His injury and
recovery were front-page news to fixated England fans.

England fell short in the 2002 World Cup and yet again in 2006, still hoping
for its first title since 1966.

Beckham returned Sunday to AC Milan's starting lineup after a
reserve-appearance in Wednesday's 4-0 Champions League loss at Manchester
United, his first match at Old Trafford against his old club since he left
after the 2002-03 season. Beckham was treated Sunday for a deep cut to his
right cheek following a collision early in the first half.

With the game scoreless, Beckham nearly scored in the 84th, but Chievo
goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino stopped his close-range effort.

"Beckham came here because he wanted to help Milan return to the top and he was
looking to get a jersey for the national team and participate in the World
Cup," Milan defender Gianluca Zambrotta said. "If other victories come, there
will surely be a dedication for David Beckham."

Sunday's win moved Milan (17-4-7) within one point of Serie A leader Inter
Milan (17-3-8) with 10 games remaining.

MEXICO CITY -- Salvador Cabanas, the top player on Paraguay's World Cup team,
was shot in the head before dawn Monday in the bathroom of a bar in a well-off
neighbourhood in Mexico City.

The 29-year-old striker underwent surgery in which doctors failed to remove a
bullet lodged in his skull. Dr. Ernesto Martinez, who was part of the surgical
team, said "we cannot guarantee that his life is out of danger." He called the
player's condition stable.

"Injuries like this are unpredictable," Martinez added. "We don't know what
kind aftereffects he might have -- perhaps none, or perhaps there will be many.
We don't know right now."

Mexico City Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera visited the popular nightspot
"Bar Bar" and said from the crime scene robbery did not appear a motive
"because nothing was taken."

Mancera later said a suspect had been identified from surveillance videos as a
man with an accent from the northern state of Sinaloa -- long considered the
cradle of Mexico's drug lords -- who travelled with at least one bodyguard.

However, Mancera said that as of yet "there is no indication of organized
crime," a term Mexican officials use to refer to drug cartels.

Mancera said the suspect was known by the nickname "J.J." or "El Modelo" ("The
Model") and was being sought. He said one of the suspect's associates was seen
talking to a Cuban woman who worked at the club, and one possible motive was
"there could have been some kind of trouble" over the woman. Cabanas was in the
bar with his wife.

He said a cleaning employee said there had been "an argument, a strong exchange
of words" between two men in the bathroom before a shot was fired.

The videos showed that club employees did not attempt to stop the suspects as
they hurriedly left the bar and got in a car.

"Nobody did anything to stop them," Mancera said.

Cabanas plays for the Mexico City team America. Club president Michel Bauer
said Cabanas was conscious when he arrived at the hospital and was speaking as
he awaited surgery.

"He was a bit confused and didn't know what had happened and he was asking
where they were taking him and why they were taking him there," Bauer told
Mexico television Televisa.

Bauer said Cabanas' wife told him the two were preparing to leave the bar when
the shooting took place in a bathroom. His wife said she found her husband on
the bathroom floor.

Mancera said four people were being questioned -- two security guards, the bar
manager and Cabanas' brother-in-law. He said the brother-in-law volunteered to
testify.

Authorities in the city's leafy Alvaro Obregon borough ordered the bar closed
Monday, saying it had failed to provide adequate security for its customers
based on the shooting.

Cabanas has played in the Mexico league since 2003 and is the highest-profile
player on his national team. Paraguay will face Italy, New Zealand and Slovakia
in the group stage of the World Cup in South Africa in June.

Cabanas has 125 goals in 218 games in Mexico and played last weekend in
America's 2-0 loss to Morelia. This month he drew attention from Sunderland
manager Steve Bruce, who expressed interest in adding Cabanas to his club in
England's Premier League.

"Club America is deeply sorry for what happened to our beloved Salvador Cabanas
and shows its total support for his family and loved ones," the Mexican team
said in a statement.

Paraguayan Football Association president Juan Angel Napout said a doctor would
travel to Mexico to assist Cabanas.

"We are praying for him," Napout said.

Cabanas was honoured as South America's soccer player of the year in 2007 by
Uruguay's El Pais newspaper, the only time a player in Mexico has won the
award.

There is a long history of violence involving Latin American soccer players.
Most prominently, Colombia defender Andres Escobar was shot and killed in his
home country days after his own-goal helped the United States defeat the
Colombians 2-1 in a major upset at the 1994 World Cup.

University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer is stepping down after
the team's New Year's Day Sugar Bowl game against #3 Cincinnatti. Meyer, 45,
cited health reasons as the catalyst for this decision.

Meyer has compiled a 56-10 record at Florida going into the bowl game, winning
two BCS national titles, making him the only coach so far to do so. His overall
record as a head coach stands at 95-18, giving him the top winning percentage
among active FBS coaches with at least 5 years of experience.

"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring
young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking
moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer said in a
statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have
forced me to reevaluate my priorities of faith and family.

"After consulting with my family, Dr. Machen, Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I
believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and
family."

The New York Mets' Gary Sheffield has become the 25th player in Major League
Baseball history to join the 500 home run club.

Tonight, in a pinch-hit appearance in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Mets'
home game against Milwaukee, Sheffield hit a home run off of reliever Mitch
Stetter.  Sheffield was pinch-hitting for Mets' relief pitcher Sean Green.

The at-bat was the 5th of the season for Sheffield; it was Sheffield's first
hit of the 2009 season (he entered the season with 499 career home runs).

Twenty-five years ago on this date, there were only 12 members of the 500 home
run club.  Three more (for a total of 15) joined over the next 15 years,
through this date in 1999.

Sheffield is the 10th player to join the 500 home run club in just the last 10
seasons.

SUZUKI'S KEY HIT IN 10TH DEFENDS JAPAN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

LOS ANGELES - The World Baseball Classic belongs to Japan.

Seattle Mariners star Ichiro Suzuki hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of
the 10th, and Japan beat reigning Olympic champion South Korea 5-3 Monday night
to win its second straight Classic title before a boisterous crowd of 54,846 at
Dodger Stadium.

The Japanese won the inaugural tournament three years ago, beating Cuba 10-6 in
the finals at Petco Park in San Diego.

South Korea had tied the game 3-3 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on
Lee Bum-ho's run-scoring single off Japanese closer Yu Darvish (2-1), who got
in trouble by issuing one-out walks to Kim Hyun-soo and Kim Tae-kyun, the
3rd and 4th hitters in the lineup.

Darvish struck out Choo Shin-soo before Lee lined a 1-1 pitch into left field,
with pinch runner Lee Jong-wook scoring easily from second.

Seiichi Uchikawa opened the 10th with a single, was sacrificed to second and
took third on a single by Akinori Iwamura. After pinch hitter Munenori Kawasaki
popped out, Iwamura took second on defensive interference.

Suzuki managed to foul off a pitch after it had bounced then lined the eighth
pitch of the at-bat from Lim Chang-yong (1-1) to centre for his fourth hit. The
Mariners' star entered with a .211 average and three RBIs in eight previous
games.

Given the lead, Darvish worked around a leadoff walk to retire South Korea in
the bottom of the 10th, setting off a wild celebration when he struck out Lee
Jin-young to end the four-hour game.

Japan's Daisuke Matsuzaka won the MVP award for the second straight time after
going 3-0 - the same record he had in the inaugural Classic. The Boston Red Sox
right-hander had a 2.45 ERA in 14 2-3 innings over three starts.

The game was the latest in an intense rivalry between the Asian powerhouses.
They split four previous games in this 16-team tournament, with Japan's 6-2
triumph in San Diego last Thursday giving it the Pool 1 title in the second
round.

Two days earlier, South Korea won a 4-1 decision, and its players planted the
nation's flag on the mound afterward - not the first time that's happened.
Suzuki made sure it wouldn't happen on this night. Suzuki is 6-for-10 in two
Classic title games.

South Korea beat Japan twice last summer in the Beijing Olympics en route to
the gold medal. The South Koreans also beat Japan twice in the inaugural
Classic three years ago before the Japanese won their semifinal matchup. And
South Korea beat Japan 3-1 to win the bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics after
losing to its rival 8-0 earlier in the Games.

Japan, which outhit South Korea 15-5 and wasted several scoring opportunities
and stranded 14, took a 3-1 lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth.
Yasuyuki Kataoka singled against Jong Hyun-wook to open the seventh, stole
second, took third on Suzuki's bunt single and scored on Hiroyuki Nakajima's
single. Japan had a chance to blow the game open, but after Suzuki took third
on Norichika Aoki's fly to deep right, Kenji Johjima grounded into an
innings-ending double play.

Iwamura's sacrifice fly off Hyunjin Ryu in the eighth gave the Japanese a
two-run lead. The run was charged to Jong, who left after giving up a one-out
single to Uchikawa. Atsunori Inaba followed with a ground-rule double before
Iwamura's fly to left.

South Korea got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Lee doubled, took
third on an infield out and scored on pinch hitter Lee Dae-ho's sacrifice fly.
Toshiya Sugiuchi relieved after starter Hisashi Iwakuma issued a two-out walk
to Park Ki-hyuk, and retired Lee Yong-kyu on a liner to left.

Iwakuma, a 27-year-old right-hander who won 21 games for the Tohoku Rakuten
Golden Eagles last year, worked 7 2-3 innings, longest outing of the Classic,
and allowed just four hits and two runs. He walked two, struck out six and
threw 97 pitches - three shy of the maximum.

Japan took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run off Bong Jung-keun in the third on
Michihiro Ogasawara's RBI single, but it could have been a lot worse because
Japan loaded the bases with one out before Kenta Kurihara grounded into an
inning-ending double play.

Choo tied the game by hitting a 1-1 pitch from Iwakuma over the centre field
fence to open the fifth for his second homer in as many games. Iwakuma allowed
only one baserunner in the first four innings.

Bong allowed six hits and one run in four-plus innings with three walks and one
strikeout while using 94 pitches. Jong relieved with runners at first and third
and nobody out in the top of the fifth and worked out of trouble, striking out
two before catcher Park Kyung-oan threw out Aoki trying to steal second.

Bong, a 28-year-old left-hander who pitched in 48 big-league games with Atlanta
and Cincinnati from 2002-04, beat Japan twice earlier in the Classic, giving up
six hits and one run in 10 2-3 innings

An elaborate ceremony was held beforehand, with the teams entering the field in
single file from their respective bullpens before lining up down the first and
third baselines. Among those participating was Sadaharu Oh, the world's
all-time career home run leader who managed the Japanese to the Classic title
three years ago.

Then, after the Japanese, South Korean and United States national anthems were
played, the players met in the middle of the diamond to shake hands, and Hall
of Fame manager and Classic global ambassador Tom Lasorda and former Dodgers
pitching star Fernando Valenzuela, a native of Mexico, threw the ceremonial
first pitches.

South Korea advanced to the championship game by beating Venezuela 10-2
Saturday night, and Japan earned its berth by topping the U.S. 9-4 Sunday
night.

Kansas City, Mo. -- Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) outscored William
Jewell College (Mo.) 52-33 in the second half to post an 83-67 victory during
the second round of the 2009 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball
Tournament at Municipal Auditorium Friday afternoon.

The Senators trailed 34-31 at halftime but shot a blistering 65.2 percent from
the field in the second half, making 15 of its 23 attempts. Meanwhile, Auburn
Montgomery's defense turned up the pressure and limited the Cardinals to 32.1
percent shooting and forced 10 turnovers in the half.

The game's fifth and final tie was at 44-44 when William Jewell's Kyle Fisher
scored off a turnover with 11:26 to play. From that point, Auburn Montgomery
reeled off 11 straight points and scored 18 of the next 21 markers to put the
game away.

Robert Johnson led a balanced Senator attack with 19 points, on eight of 10
shooting, and seven rebounds. Quadavious Brown added 18 points while Kip Small
netted 17 points. Nathan Thomas recorded 10 points and shared rebound honors
with Johnson, totaling seven.

For William Jewell, Alex Bernskoetter came off the bench to lead the Cardinals
with 14 points. He had a perfect shooting day, going four for four from the
field and six for six from the free throw line. Larry Mandacina tallied 11
points and Jacques Wilson recorded 10 points.

Auburn Montgomery improves to 27-6 overall and will play Robert Morris College
(Ill.) in the first quarterfinal game at 1 p.m. CDT on Saturday. Robert Morris
defeated Tougaloo College (Miss.) 89-69 on Friday to advance to the next round.
William Jewell ends its season with a 23-11 overall record.

GAME NOTES

Auburn Montgomery's starters outscored the Cardinals' starters 73-34 b& Auburn
Montgomery advances to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1988, when it
won the quarterfinal contest with a 51-49 victory over William Jewell b& Auburn
Montgomery improves to 11-10 all-time in the tournament, while William Jewell
is now 8-6 in tournament play b& the Cardinals fall to 2-3 all-time in the
second round of the tournament b& Auburn Montgomery head coach Larry Chapman
and William Jewell head coach Larry Holley have a combined 62 years of coaching
experience and more than 1,400 victories.

Lady Blues win 5th MIAA Tournament Championship in last 7 years in win over ESU

KANSAS CITY , Mo. -- Washburn receives the automatic bid to the NCAA Division
II Championships. The complete bracket will be announced tonight at ncaa.com at
8 p.m. CST.

The Lady Blues were led by Janice Bright who recorded her first career double
double with 25 points and 12 rebounds. She earned tournament MVP honors. Bright
was joined on the all-tournament team with 17 points off the bench. Brette
Ulsaker scored 14 points hitting 3 of 4 3-point attempts.

Washburn shot 41 percent from the field hitting 23 of 56 shots. Washburn hit 17
of 21 free throws in the last 5:59 of the game and 25 of 31 for the full 40
minutes to lock down the win.
