Supposedly a guy is supposed to pickup my sks rifle next time he's in town. I
haven't advertised it yet, just responded to an ad for a guy who was looking
for one - I said $450 firm for the gun and 1200rds cheap ammunition, which I
think is a reasonable or slightly high price. It is a relatively nice, numbers
matching (including magazine), Chinese manufacture.

I'm torn, it's a gun I only shoot every few years or so, but when I do, it's an
affordable plinker that doesn't require me to sit in front of the reloading
press. It was also my first rifle.

***

I'd really like to sell my .223 AR and the sks, put some money beside it, and
get an AR chambered in 6.5 Grendel or a DPMS LR-308. I don't shoot rifles too
frequently, would like to just be down to one high power and a couple 22's.

***

After yesterday's range visit, thinking about selling my snubbies as well. I
just can't shoot them double-action nearly as accurately or rapidly as the
Glock 26 or Kel-Tec PF-9. I doubt I will ever practice enough to become
proficient with them.

i'm saving my pennies for an FS2000
btw, i'll probably never follow through, but that is the .223 SHTF rifle i want
most of all.

any .223 AR recommendations? prices seem to vary, I think i'd prefer the type
with a collapsable/foldable stock. again, i'm not really in the market, just
window shopping for the hell of it.

I have yet to obtain an AK, but have an SKS. I just couldn't do the Chinese
version as I couldn't get my head around the stamped metal, so I waited for a
good deal on a Russian, milled one. Admittedly, the machining isn't the best,
but at least it is machined and very robust.

I'm almost exclusively a target shooter, but I do like to have fun on occassion
and shoot things just for the heck of it.
I was out on a guy's farm in Georgia a couple of weeks ago and he was doing
some "fun" shooting with a coupe of assault weapons and a pistol or two. He
took out his AR-15 and shot at a platic bottle filled with a liquid. When the
bullet hit it, the bottle exploded and very loudly! He had the bottle mixed
with water and tannerite. Tannerite is not an explosive, but sounds like one
when hit with a projectile travelling greater than 2300fps. Talk about fun!

Shot the Judge today, it felt good. :) I'm not accurate with it yet, since the
last time I shot a handgun was like 1992.

So anyway, we tried out the .410 first, but I was an idiot and accidentally
grabbed some old #6 shot. Shot a watermelon from about 20 yards. It lived.

Brother points out the big spread. "oh yeah, good point". close to 5 yards.
Watermelon still lived, but took more shot. :) I also was aiming
"incorrectly". My brother pointed out that I keep shooting high. I said,
"well yeah I'm aiming middle" and he said that due to the close distance, I
need to aim low. So I aimed below the watermelon a little bit. It didn't like
that at all ;)

Changed to .45 Colt bullets. Aimed low, but pulled left a little bit (my
fault), zinged the side, taking off a little chunk. My friend shot it with his
..38, finishing the job.

Next water melon I aimed properly, pulled the trigger, and the watermelon
exploded. It was a glorious sight. :) (this is still .45)

We tried to keep things a "typical" distance that might be in teh house. So 5
to 10 yards. Next time we go out I'll try 25 yards.

(Miser/33962) Mr T>

Mr T>
My dad just got one of those for Christmas! I got to shoot it soon after and I
have to say I was surprised at how little it kicked. My SP101 with 150 grain
..357 ammo actually kicks more, which really surprised me.

Speaking of the SP101, I love my gun, but I'm thinking of trading it in. The
problem is that with its short barrel it simply doesn't cluster my shots very
well.. it's kind of across the board when I shoot at any distance greater than
point blank. I'd really like a more accurate carry gun. There's a used Ruger
KP90D .45 that's for sale at the local gun shop on consignment. It's in great
shape and I'm definitely sold on the Ruger brand at this point. The guy
selling it is apparently willing to trade for a lightweight .38 so I'm hoping
he'll take my SP101 instead as an even trade, with me paying the consignment
fee in cash. *crosses fingers* Here's what the KP90D looks like:

http://www.genitron.com/handgundb/DB-Handgun-Detail.asp?ID=263

Anyone had any experience with them?

I love the Defender. It's our first .45.. it has a very comfortable grip and
doesn't kick nearly as much as my SP101 .357. The lightweight model is perfect
for my wife's hands and purse. Unfortunately, she loves it so much, she keeps
it in the safe all the time instead of in her purse. Guess I can't blame her
though.. it's the first firearm I've ever heard her refer to as "sexy." It
would suck to have someone walk off with her purse, or have it lost in an
evidence locker if (heaven forbid) she ever had to use her carry weapon.
Instead, she carries her Bersa Thunder 9mm, which has a decocker for long
trigger pull (no safety needed for carry) and a 13-round clip as opposed to the
7-round Defender clip.

(Distant Horizon/33959) So how do you like the Defender so far?

So how do you like the Defender so far?

I picked up a Glock 36 used the other day, price was right so I figured I'd try
it out. Took it to the range the other day, but knew I wouldn't have time to
shoot it much (had two other guns I really wanted to shoot), so I only shot 3
mags of Golden Saber 230gr through it. Being used to a steel commander-sized
45, I was surprised at how much recoil and muzzle rise there was. Reacquiring
target was unacceptably slow.

Thinking part of that was the ammunition I had on hand, but thinking the light
weight had something to do with it. I had never considered that the recoil in
lightweight 3" 1911 chambered in 45 would be so stout, but shooting that Glock
has me wondering now.

Count>
You were right on both counts. The Colt's pin can be pushed through but needed
some help from a small screwdriver to come all the way out. And on the .22 the
only difference from your description is that it also has a little hex screw
next to the pin that has to be unscrewed and removed for the slide to come off
(already knew about that part).

I was able to get them both stripped and cleaned.

Miser> i'm going to bet you a nickel that the defender (3" 1911?) has a bull
barrel? i think it will require a pin through the guide rod or some sort of
spring capture tool to get it apart.
basically, you rack the slide back to expose the guide rod, then insert the
takedown tool through a hole in the guide rod. once the slide comes off, the
whole guide rod assembly comes out the bottom of the slide.

as far as the .22 goes, judging from a picture i see, it looks like it comes
down like a standard 1911
the front plug under the barrel is pushed in, and the bushing is rotated 90
degrees to let the plug and spring come out. be careful to not let it fly out,
lest you lose the plug and/or an eye.

then you should be able to get the pin out and the slide off, then the bushing
rotates about 180 degrees the other way to release the barrel.

For Christmas, my wife and I picked up some 1911s. I got an ATI 1911 .22 to
take to the range and go plinking with and the wife got a Colt Defender
Lightweight 1911 .45. I know, I got the raw end of the deal, and it's even
funnier if you can imagine a 5' 120# gal shooting the .45. Anyway, between the
holidays and other obligations, we haven't had much time to shoot them. Now
that we have, it's time to clean them.

That's where I run into problems. Our other guns seem so simple and easy to
take apart and clean. I can get them (a .22, .357, and a 9mm) done in probably
about 45 minutes time. So the other night I go to take apart my ATI 1911 .22.
I got as far as removing the pin. None of the instructions in the manual make
any sense. I actually ended up scratching the area around the pinhole, which
makes me a little annoyed and also concerned about doing the same with my
wife's Colt.

Is there some trick to getting these things apart (and, more importantly, back
together)? And without scuffing? I'm thinking of taking another stab at the
ATI tonight. There's no Youtube video for this particular gun, but there are
plenty of 1911 videos--will that do? I'm open to any suggestions.

One reason I would not go Glock 26 is the double-stack mag. I'm looking for a
slim ankle-carry piece, and the 26 won't cut it. I really like the grip
ergonomics and smoothed edges/corners of the lc9. I've heard negatives about
the length of the trigger pull though. I'll take a long trigger pull than FTE
issues, though.

OK, I'm in the process of buying a Ruger LC9... I see it online available for
$315 prior to FFL transfer fees... locally it's $389 or so. One place I found
an LC9 with a nickel-plated slide and etching, like the one pictured here:
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2012/01/16/engraved-ruger-lc9-limited-
edition/
http://bit.ly/wIuLjo

Think it's worth $479?

Luke> this is a wraparound grip, and the rust was on the front of the grips
under the rubber. If I had to guess, I'd think something got trapped there
when I installed them. I didn't think to clean and prep the surface first.
the gun is a ruger SR1911

On my j-frame, it was right along the edges of the grips (rubber). On my 1911,
it was a small part of where the grip touched the frame. I've never had the
screws rust.

Picked up a lightly used Glock 36 the other day. Seems like a nice piece, the
entire frame from the trigger guard rearward is narrower than my G26. Have yet
to shoot it.

I think there are lots and lots of folks that believe stainless steel doesn't
rust. That is not true. Stainless steel is rust resistant, with some more
than others depending on series, they all will corrode at some point. I've
also found the starting of rust behind Hogue grips so I remove them
periodically to clean and to apply a light film of oil.

SFTD, but got curious as I have insomnia... anyway, on a forum I searched on,
it's pointed out that steel wool will just leave tiny particles of iron to rust
again.

Products to treat that are mentioned are
blue scotch brite pad and oil
Blue Wonder
Eezox
RB-21
Baracade
naval jelly (in hardware store)

Break Free CLP is supposed to be all that for preventing rust (and is easy to
find); but I don't think it'll just magically stop corrosion that is already
started and not treated.

Your gun is rusting. :( Been there. Don't know whether you should be
panicking or not... it doesn't take long for that rust to pit the metal where
it's not something that can just polish out.

It happened on my j-frame beneath the grips, discovered a few days after being
caught in a rainstorm (don't know how long it had been forming, but I suspect
not very long). Discovered it under the factory wooden grip panels on my 1911
about a week ago too. Since it's been under panels on my guns, I've always
just hit it with a one-step rust converter to prevent it from rusting further;
but there's got to be a better way to address it.

This link suggests using oil and steel wool to remove:
http://www.ehow.com/how_6193222_remove-rust-stainless-steel-gun.html

Finally sold my Mosin. I made a profit from it, and the guy also got a deal.
I thought I paid 115 for it, but I found my receipt in my files. Paid $85 for
it. Paid another $40 for a can of ammo. I did buy some boxes of ammo prior that
I shot. I call that paying for fun, so I am not including it in the cost of
ownership. Sold 400 rounds of ammo and the gun for $175. I originally asked
$200. I could not believe how many people only offered $125-$150 for it. The
last gun show this winter had the same ammo for about $.25/rnd. So, $100 fair
market value, plus a G.I. ammo can to store it in. The gun cost him $60, with
all the fixins (bayonet, sling, cleaning kit etc)

Yes, BS. ;o)
I normalize just prior to heat treatment. Working a blade with a hammer will
impart a stress and will work harden the material. No real magic in
normalizing, either. I heat to critical and then let it cool by the fire at a
slow rate, but not as slow as the anealing process. I'll do it a couple of
times and then heat treat. I used to use old motor oil for heat treatment, but
my wife got pretty upset when I put a blade in our household oven for
tempering! I got smart and now use vegetable oil. :o) Same result, better
smell!

i watched a guy do 'normalizing' of a heated blade he was making out of an old
file stating that you have to let the blade cool pointing north/south so that
the magnetism of the blade is lengthwise. I never thought about it, but
apparntly it aligns the molecules in the blade to make it stronger.. Or maybe
it's all BS.

Not sure why the woodgrain stamping, but I suppose it was just an appealing
decoration rather than a plain blade. Personally, I like a smooth matt finish
on blades, but I have worked with demascus and have even made a couple of
billets.
My prefered method of blade making is to forge to shape, and then scotch mill
using a file and sandpaper. I like O1, but have used 1080, car coil springs,
leaf springs, and old railroad spikes. All, except for the railroad spikes,
have made very nice blades.

thanks for the information. Yeah, if you're not too lazy to sharpen the
things more often, I think they can get a sharper edge more easily than this
really hard stuff we see in stores today.

I can't find any markings on the handle of mine. I've found other "HAMMER
FORGED" Made in USA ones on ebay, but people are selling them as various
brands. I presume in the early 1900-1950 a lot of styles and production
methods mirrored each other. I've always been curious about that fake
woodgrain look you see in the blades though.. What the original marketing was
on that.

Not a blade historian, but I do make knives by forging. Yours looks like a
Green River knife and the forging process is more of a stamping process that
produces a basic blade that is deurred, handled, and sharpened. Any high
carbon forged blade is going to be a good knife. Lots of folks get very
wrapped up in the latest in exotic alloys, but I'm a fan of good ole O1 tool
steel. Very high carbon, easy to move when heated, and very easy to heat treat
and temper. Even cold forgings will result in an R60, but it will heat treat
up to R65, IIRC.
BTW, when I say yours looks like a Green River, I only mean that it is similar
to their design.
Nice knife.

another knife question in case there are any experts in here.. I bought this
bad ass butcher knife over the weekend. It only says "Hammer Forged" Made in
USA.

LF&C knife company made a lot of knives of this style which is simply called a
butcher knife.

Mine happens to have a 10" blade so it's a bit of a mini-machete.

I'm trying to find history behind the design in terms of why knives were shaped
this way. Also the blades of this style knife have horizontal lines that run
the length of the blade. Like impressions for some reason.. I'm curious if
it's part of the forging process like you see on Damascus steel or what the
deal is.. Maybe just a gimmick of old.

Anyway, here's a photo of my knife:

(pictured with a whole slew of other stuff I bought at the same flea market)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/luketrash/6491420213/in/photostream/lightbox/

And here is a photo of another knife that shows these lines in the blade:

http://www.proxibid.com/AuctionImages/2218/32330/063.jpg

I'm just looking for history about the blades, how they were made, or whatever.

The thing took a crazy edge and I can shave with it know. It's a rather
dangerous blade.

SFTD but just wanted to say we picked up the ATI 1911 .22 today. Took it out
to the range and was very impressed! Awesome sights and barely any recoil at
all. It does need to be loaded one light in order to get the magazine in
fully, but that may change once it's been broken in a bit. It's the size of a
standard 1911 but I can still carry it the same way I do my SP101. Not quite
as much punch for a carry weapon but could be fun to mix it up a little.
Anyway, just really happy with it!

I think we've decided on an ATI 1911 for our new 22. At $370, it's a little
more costly at our local gun shop than other places, but we'd really rather
give them the business. I may try and make one last offer on the fluted Ruger
Mark III Hunter first, but we'll likely end up with the 1911. We like the Sig
Mosquito better but it's a little more pricey and I've heard it's picky on the
ammo (like the P22).

When I told the guys at the range about wanting another .22 for cheap range
runs, they almost talked us into getting into reloading instead. It just
sounds like it'd take too much at this point. Even though it's a pretty hefty
sum of cash to get started, we're really more concerned about finding the space
at home and having the time.

Why would you carry your cleaning supplies to the range? I carry a cleaning rod
for knocking out stuck cases or squib rounds, but the most I carry to the range
that's wet is a bottle of lubricant and a couple of bottles of water.

I carry my oil and a boresnake in one of those waterproof dry boxes you get in
the camping section of wal-mart. Works perfectly and keeps everything tidy.

Well, I'm slowly wearing down my buddy for the Colt 1911 in .38 Super, but I've
seen Springfields at about 550, and I'm also jonesin' for a P220. My buddy
picked up the Colt for 500 bucks from his brother, but says he's seen them go
for 900 bucks. They are bit pricey new, but can't see myself paying much more
than 700 for it. If he wants more I think I'd lean more towards the
Springfield or the Sig.

Our other two 22s, a Beretta NEOS and a Phoenix Arms HP22a, can eat bulk
Federal ammo all day without much in the way of feed issues. I wouldn't
necessarily depend on it for personal defense but then I wouldn't typically use
a 22 for defense anyway. We sold the NEOS but now I'm really thinking we
should've held onto it.

I do like the Ruger Mark III. My other experience with Ruger (my SP101) has
been great, and the Mark III is a pretty slick gun. SC, did you have feed
problems with your P22 or was it something else? We're probably going to steer
clear of Walther from here on in, if nothing else because of the 1-year
warranty. That tells me that they don't have much confidence in their
firearms. Even Taurus has a lifetime _transferrable_ warranty! It's a shame,
too, because I really like the Walther PPS and wouldn't mind having one some
day as my carry weapon.

As long as you feed it decent ammo
(which is a requirement for pretty much any automatic 22 pistol) it feeds 100%
reliably.

We owned a P22 for a while and I was pretty dissatisfied with it. It
constantly had feed problems. When I called the company, they said I should
use CCI mini-mag ammo to avoid the feed problems. When I did so, I still had
feed problems. So I sent it in to them and, about three weeks later, they sent
it back with a little note saying "your firearm is working fine. We didn't do
anything to fix it," So we sold it. Really disappointing, because I loved
everything else about the gun. The other surprising/disappointing thing? Only
a one year warranty. WTF, Walther?

Given the cost of other manufacturer's
bags, this thing is a deal even at Midway's full price of 69.99. If you're in
need of a range bag, it is hard to go wrong wtih this one. Lots
of good choices, but I have to say my favorite pistol in .22 cal is the S&W
model 41 followed by the Ruger Mark Series with bull barrel.

Count, you were right. I can chamber a round in the Bersa, enable the safety
(which decocks it), then disable the safety and shoot in DA. With the pull
required on that first (DA) shot, I don't think the safety will even be
necessary.

I'm beginning to regret selling our Beretta NEOS 22 now. Our trips to the
range have become much more expensive now that my wife and I only have one 22
between us. We're looking at possibly a 22cal 1911 or a Sig Mosquito. Our
local gun shop was also trying to give us a deal on a Ruger Mark III Hunter
with a fluted barrel (beautiful gun) for $500 because it has a little scuff on
the wood part of the handle. Still going to hold out for a trip to the pawn
shop before making any decisions on the 22.

Price on the Sig P250 in 9mm and .40 around here has dropped to $350. A hell
of a deal for a Sig.

You never want to carry a DA/SA in the cocked position - if they have a safety
they usually will decock anyway. They are meant to be shot DA for the first
shot. Pull it learn it shoot it that way. My favorite DS/SA is my Sig P220...
it's only safety is the DA trigger pull (no safety) which is the way I like it.
If I am pulling it out of the hoslter for anything other than cleaning - it's
to shoot it and I want it to go *BANG*. I actually shy away from handguns with
anyting other than grip/trigger safety. Anything that could 'flip' to safety
accidentally is not something I want to trust my life with.

SA for all
subsequent shots beats DA only.

I have heard good things about Bersa for the price point - lot of people in
post-financial collapse Argentina were carrying them as an affordable
alternative to Glock.

My wife has a Bersa Thunder 9mm, which we both agree is a really handy firearm.
I'd like to try carrying it but ran into something of a problem I hadn't
considered before.

When I took the CCW course, one point that was emphasized is that it's
important to have your gun cocked and ready to go in case you need fast access
to it (ie one in the chamber). However, the decocker is built into the safety,
and uncocks the gun when the safety is enabled. So, basically, I have to have
this thing cocked AND unsafe when carrying it? Not sure how comfortable I am
with that. I'd prefer to have it cocked and safe.

Any way around this? I thought about trying to hold the hammer back while
turning on the safety, but I don't want to break the thing. I typically carry
my SP101 which doesn't need to be cocked nor need a safety; or our other semi
that doesn't have a decocker. So it's not a problem I've run into before.

I found in noteworthy the second rep
from Chiappa was shooting with a Sig!

that bag is on sale for $40 now.
PVC coated polyester.
i prefer nylon cordura, or whatever that duck-type synthetic material is
called.
still, if i can fit all my range stuff into this one bag, i'm gonna hit it.
thx for the link

Calhoun> Thx for that info about the Rhino. I'm sure it may be more the
exception than the rule, but for a purely irrational impulse type purchase,
it's enough evidence to kill my urge to buy buy buy. I like something
interesting, but if it's going to give me problems, I want nothing to do with
it.

My buddy did some work for a wheeler-dealer; the deal was he'd get a .357 in
trade, which said wheeler-dealer didn't have yet. So imagine his surprise when
the guy showed up with a Glock 32. A cool gun and he is pleased with it, but
he was braced for .357 magnum ammo prices, which are high enough; .357 Sig
prices are even more.

There was a supposedly minty g37 (full size Glock in .45GAP) for sale locally a
few weeks back, and the seller went from $500 to $350 over the span of about a
week. I considered offering $300, but I could not talk myself into reloading
another caliber.

Yes, and I reload, so it is not as much of a burden for me. However, even
reloading is getting to be an expensive proposition.
I shoot hard lead bullets through my 1911 and a box of 500 are about 75 bucks.
It is cheaper than buying factory loads, but man, it is still a hit to the
wallet.
The .38 Super is more of a novelty, but his pistol is a shooter and I would
most definitley put rounds through it at a regular interval!

One of
them was using a .357 Rhino in the class. It was a disaster, the thing didn't
shot half the time, and after three or four hours, the guy put the gun away and
rented a house S&W to finish the course.

There really isn't much more in-depth analysis to be done, honestly. It's a
plastic AR-15 that's WAY too expensive for what it is.

Of course, Gander Mountain is also usually kind of a shitty place to buy stuf
(at least around here) because it's usually 20-100% more than an actual gun
shop. Your local experience may vary, of course.

Consider for $60 more than the price of that plastic Bushie, you can get a real
metal DoubleStar any day of the week (when they're in stock, of course) at
Bud's. I had a DoubleStar CAR15 as my first AR-15 and they're great no-frills
flat-top ARs. I've since sold it, and it's performing just as well for my
friend.

And to whoever mentioned the Mini-14, avoid. While they're relatively reliable,
they're not very accurate and there are nowhere near as many parts and goodies
available as the AR-15. When the Mini-14 was a few hundred cheaper than a cheap
base AR-15, it was a decent truck gun... now that it's crept up to within a
hundred bucks from stuff like the DoubleStar, it's just not worth it. You'll be
tons happier with an AR-15.

The best value in AR-15s right now IMO is Spikes Tactical... but getting a hold
of a complete gun is a couple-month wait IIRC. I have a Spike's lower on my
piston gun and I'd buy another in a heartbeat:

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6066/6101176419_395446b99f_b.jpg

(NN/WS, gun porn)

That's an Adams Arms piston flat-top upper with a Spike's Punisher lower.
MagPul furniture and mags. It runs like a champ and eats just about everything
(except TulAmmo steel case).

SFTD, but there have been some complaints about the Nano not properly ejecting
cheap ammo, and one of the reps had a response on the beretta forum

"MRecanatini
Social Media Manager,
Beretta USA Corp.

So... I think it's time for me to chime in. If the response comes on monday
night is not because (as one member suggested) "Italian guy is nowhere to be
found." We take pride in our product, and I can assure you nobody, from our
engineers to our marketing team, would ever lay low when Beretta is put into
question.
However, I hope you can all appreciate the fact that it's hard to call a
meeting on Saturday afternoon.

To address everyone's concern, here are some thoughts.

Over the past five centuries, Beretta has been successful not by making
"catch-all products," but because of the focus we put in the development of our
guns. We understand that guns are tools, designed for a specific task, and we
take this very seriously.

An over and under is designed for a different task than a semiautomatic
shotgun, and a trap gun is designed to do different things from a waterfowling
gun. Our tactical guns have a different purpose from our luxury SO series over
and unders. The same applies to all of our handguns.

This is even more important in cases where a gun is designed to protect one's
life. CCW guns are designed to do exactly that.

CCW handguns are designed to be used with higher pressure ammunition. They are
not designed to go out and plink with.

The most important design requirement, when we designed the Nano, was that the
gun had to operate reliably, flawlessly and continually with the type of
ammunition that is used in CCW situations. Not once, not one hundred and not
even one thousand times, but thousands of times.

Higher pressure ammunition puts amounts of stress on the mechanics of a handgun
to the point that the design requirements become of paramount importance. This
is magnified considerably when dealing with micro-compact pistols

We believe it is more important that a CCW gun work reliably, consistently and
without breaking down with higher pressure ammunition. In order to achieve this
life-saving condition, we had to build the gun, quite literally, like a tank.
Do you know many manufacturers who can pound a bullet into the bore of their
pistol and fire another one behind it?

Surely, we could have produced a gun that (as some have put it) "would eat
anything that's thrown at it," but for how long? As a simple matter of physics,
guns built to cycle with lower-pressure ammo won't last long when
higher-pressure rounds are fired through them. How long will the gun last,
before it shatters under the pressure of this CCW ammunition? Most of us,
fortunately, will find out at the range, when the gun cracks, some of us
(unfortunately) will find out when the gun is really needed. But that's too
late.

Will the Nano feed anything out there? I bet it will. However, if the load is a
powder puff and cant move the slide with authority under recoil and the shooter
cant provide a solid platform under recoil, then I cant promise that it will
eject that casing with authority.

We don't take personal defense lightly. During pre-production tests, the Nano
was fired 8000 times with a total of 2 failures. These tests were not conducted
with +P ammunition, but they also werent conducted using bottom of the barrel
fodder. This might not be important as you're reading this, but it becomes
literally vital, when you're unholstering your Nano in a dark parking lot,
under attack. We have tested the Nano in extreme conditions because we want to
make sure it will work in those conditions every time, without fail."

good thing you asked first ;)
have i mentioned that the more time I spend with my new Nano, the more i like
it?
i mean, the 1911 is very nice and stuff, but it weighs a lot and it's very
large.
the Nano, well, imagine the 1911 profile as a rectange defined by the grip and
barrel. rotated 180 degrees, the Nano sits almost exactly in the empty space
of that rectangle. or, more plainly, if the 1911 were in a box, the nano could
fit in that box with the 1911 and not touch the 1911. Plus, it's a 9mm. The
short grip is no issue for me, as the backstrap sits comfortably in the palm of
my hand. the trigger will take some getting used to compared to the 1911, but
it is far better than the DA draw on the PX4, which i'm guessing is not too
different from a 92?
anyhow, as a new gun buyer, this has been a very good year.

Looks like Midway USA is having some pretty neat specials this week for Black
Friday. Tomorrow, they have a special for 1000 9mm rounds for $70. We
typically pay $15/50 at Walmart, so this could easily be worth picking up for
us. The thing I'm unclear on is if they are 9mm LUGER rounds. The grain (115)
is the same as the lugers we buy, but the description of the item isn't clear.
It's also a brand I don't recognize--Rainier. Still think they'd be a great
buy if they don't have a really bad reputation and they'll work with our gun.

http://preview.tinyurl.com/6vkf36f

Any thoughts? Failing all else, I could just call check with them tomorrow,
and just buy them over the phone rather than on the website.

Lots of other handy deals there too, btw. New deals every day of the week.
You guys may want to check it out!

i'll post a range report, hopefully this weekend.
i'm scared of it!!

i haven't shot it yet, but i'm starting to see some people having FTE issues
with cheaper ammo, of which i personally have 250 rounds of :(
off the top of my head, since this gun was designed as .40, i'm guessing the
spring may be on the stiff end of the spectrum, like with the Gen 4 glock 19.
time will tell.

UPDATE> Okay, finally got to the range. I put through 100 rounds of Federal
Champion and around 20 CCI Blazers, no issues.
gun shoots well, i need to practice aiming. doesn't feel too small to shoot, i
like it quite a bit.
kicks more than the PX4 compact, but hardly difficult to shoot.

Heck, the guns I've seen at local gun shows haven't been all that much lower
than the neighborhood Bass Pro or even the gun shop. Just paying the $10 for
my wife and I to get in pretty well negates any savings. It seems like the gun
shows are best for folks who are looking to buy one of those cheap $100
pistols, or need something specific that isn't sold locally, or just want to go
for the entertainment factor. My wife and I probably fall most often into the
latter category.

Count, I think the Nano is really sharp. Looks like it'll be a great carry
weapon. Given its small profile and weight, I'm curious to know how much kick
it has. I'd heard that similarly-sized .380s had some pretty good kick, so
really curious about the 9mm.

I guess I was sort of mistaken... the Boberg xr9s has more grip area than the
Beretta Nano, and holds one more round in the magazine, yet the Boberg is still
smaller.

http://tinyurl.com/7koq42d
http://tinyurl.com/89jyfsg

Flat-out sexiest gun I've seen in a while. If only it weren't so very damn
expensive!

The slide doesn't lock open on the last round, but that's due to the way the
feeding mechanism works, since the gun pulls the bullet out the magazine on the
rearward movement of the slide. Still a considerable issue though, as the gun
won't tell you when it's empty.

haven't shot the px4 (compact) enough to make any definitive judgements, but it
is a solid gun that didn't malfunction the little we did shoot it.
it's definitely a little chunk, kinda topheavy. the grip is between compact
and full sized in that i can get all my fingers on it pretty well.
afaik, the PX4 compact does not have an extended clip, i think you are thinking
of the subcompact. The subcompact has the silver trumpeted barrel with the
standard action.
the compact and full-sized versions have rotating barrels, the subcompact isn't
much smaller than the compact.
i'll have the nano as my carry gun tomorrow.
of course, given the rules of transporting firearms cased and unloaded in WI, i
doubt i'll ever actually carry the thing unless I take up jogging ;)

I really like the little boot on the clip that extends
the grip.

For my next handgun purchase, I had been looking at a Springfield XD, but after
shooting one I think I'd rather have a 1911.

goddamned fucking gander mountain strikes again.
at the end of the 48 hour waiting period, i will be picking up my new Beretta
Nano, hopefully my last gun purchase this year.
theoretically, it shoudl be the last gun i should ever want or need to get.
i have the 1911, wife has a px4 compact, and now the Nano comes in to the
family.
this instead of a glock 19 or glock 26. By the new yearh, i should have my CCW
permit, depending on processing time.

ran another 200 rounds thru the sr1911. had one FTE on the final round, but it
was a friend's magazine, so i'm suspecting the mag as a factor.
i've decided i can defend myself but i'll never be a competitive shooter.
i'm liking the pachmayr finger groove grips i installed.

also got to shoot my friend's S&W 2" .357 snubbie, hammerless DAO and
compensated, with 5 holes thru the top of the barrel. the fire shoots up like
a foot. it was a hoot.

he also had a 1911 race gun, put a couple clips through that. using a dot
scope feels like cheating. the gun had a really light trigger, went off a
couple times before i was ready, kinda scary.

Jody (my friend) kept telling me i needed to take a higher grip of the gun, but
it felt really unnatural. i like to just hold it where it lies, not really
forcing the angle..s

I'm more looking to use it to scare bears, not to shoot them. These are black
bears, and I'm not particularly worried about getting killed by them or
anything. Just in certain areas around campsites and such it takes more than a
cup and a spoon to scare me off. Still pretty rare, but I'd feel better having
more than a cup and a spoon either way. That, and really I'm more worried about
the whack job people I sometimes run into more than the bears even, lol. I'm
not looking for something to put them down. I do have bear spray as well, and
being a hunter I'm pretty well versed in dealing with bears. I've never had a
problem with one. I just am wary of being so far from civilization with no
phone and no means of protection.

i have personal experience with the blackhawk, hence the suggestion. I was
very annoyed by the fixed cylinder and single action, but it strikes me as a
strong reliable gun when you *need* it to work, and it seems like it could
deliver a little extra oomph with a stronger cylinder and topstrap for the hot
loads. I used to try hand-loading some .45 Long Colts as close to .44
velocities as possible. Not sure if they were accurate or wise, but the
blackhawk never complained.

and, yeah, while gunblast has reviewed a lot of guns i've researched, the guy
really strikes me like one of those typical small gun shop owners who give you
the constant impression that your desire to spend money in their establishment
is the greatest inconvenience they've ever had to endure.

I have a buddy who survived a grizzly bear attack in Alaska; he had a .40
revolver with him, which probably saved his ass because he was cutting a
landing zone for the helicopter. He said if he'd had a shotgun, it would have
been on the ground in a pile with his pack, meaning when he came face to face
with the bear, he would not have had quick access to it.

He did everything right, went fetal and ended up shooting the bear when it bit
into his leg. It backed off, 10-20 feet away, and he lined up another shot,
aiming for the head. The bear tucked tail and ran. He waited for the helicopter
pilot (still half an hour out) by putting "bear attack" into his GPS as a
waypoint.

So, he got evaced to a base, then went by ground to a hospital since smoke from
wildfires was too heavy for an air evac. In Fairbanks, he got morphine,
antibiotics, X-rays, stitches, and a date with the ER nurse.

Correction: looking back on his email, it was a .41 mag revolver, 6" barrel.

Tetanus vaccine: $45
Emergency room visit: $400
Wound debridement: $700
Drop-my-pants bar scar: Priceless

For bears your best bet is something like bear spray... unless you
plan to bludgeon the bear with your handgun while he mauls you.

The kind of gun you'd need to put down a bear reliably really only
exists in rifle or large-frame revolver form... and it's gonna kick
like a bitch. Think .454 Casul or .500 SW Mag for handguns.

10mm is the bare minimum and assumes you can make a kill shot under
extreme pressure into a very small window to stop a bear.

Oh hell, you're thinking bears. At this point I'm assuming you're going to
hike with gun in a holster on your waist - I'd want something small enough that
it will ride close to you so it's less likely to catch on branches, weigh heavy
on your belt, and just generally get in the way.

Anyway, for bears I think I'd want something with some power, more than your
typical .45acp/.40S&W/9mm. For an automatic, I think a Glock 20 or 29 (10mm)
would be good. If going with a revolver, I'd think a 4" Ruger Gp100 .357 (or
it's predecessor, the Single Six/Speed Six/Service Six) would be good.

A 1911 in 10mm would be ok too, but you're getting spendy at that point.
Slimmer than the Glocks, but probably not lighter.

Not a fan of the Blackhawk - single-action only - you have to rotate the
cylinder to unload a casing, load a bullet, repeat five times. I guess they
are fairly lightweight, I recently got rid of an old model Blackhawk in .44mag,
which was Miserable to shoot with full-house loads. But I don't think I'd
wanna hike around with a Blackhawk on my leg. If I was going that big, I'd be
thinking of a Ruger Redhawk or a big S&W (I'm unfamiliar with S&W's bigger
revolvers).

The sp101 recommend is intriguing; they are easy to carry, and available in
both 3.08" and 2.25" barrel lengths (I have both and they are nice guns for
carry, though the triggers do not tend to be a nice as S&W's; or other Rugers,
for that matter)... if I was wanting to defend against a bear, I'd want at
least the 3" barrel length for the increased sight radius so I could maybe hit
the bear at a little more range.

The Glock can get wet without any disasterous effects; pretty much any other
gun I'm worried about getting wet. I've found out the hard way that the
stainless alloy guns are made from has a lot of iron in it, and they DO rust.
Caught in a downpour once, unbeknownst to me water was under grip panels for a
few days, and that's all it took to permanently pit the gun just a bit. Never
mind the inner workings...

Don't forget to budget for a good holster... a quality holster that's made to
fit your specific gun is worth every penny (the gun is secure in the holster,
and the holster is securely attached to the belt), and in my experience, it
takes a couple of tries to get a holster you really like carrying.

Gunblast - Has Jeff Quinn ever reviewed a gun he didn't like? Good overviews
and pics of the guns, but he seems as buddy-buddy with the gun manufacturers as
the gun magazines are.

Yeah, it's mostly just to cover legal bases and not to necessarily attempt to
conceal it. I just don't want to get hit with not quite open carrying. I'm not
particuarily worried about the water as I'd just pick up a pelican to carry it
in when I was in the water. It would mostly be for the back country hiking that
I do that sometimes is many miles in the woods with no cell coverage at all. I
just don't feel safe being in bear country with no means to protect myself.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll take a look at all of them. I'm not completely
objecting to a revolver, I just prefer not to use them. I'm sure I could get
used to them. I got used to my compound bow and never thought I would.

Part of the problem is I live in the sticks. We have a range around the corner
from my house, but it's outdoor only and I live about 50 miles from the closest
indoor range, and gun shop. I have a few friends who have CCWs so I can talk to
them about letting me try what they have I'm sure.

Or for the best of both worlds, there's the Ruger SP101 .357. High caliber,
concealable (though a bit heavy) and reliable. This is my primary carry weapon
and I love it. And at about $500, not too pricey, either. They make a
hammerless version for carry, but it just seems way too inaccurate to shoot
double-action for me.

I'll second the Walther PPS, by the way. A very nice, slim, concealable gun
with plenty of punch. I've fired the .40 cal and it bucked a little, but was a
lot of fun to shoot.

For my next gun, I had been considering a Springfield XD (maybe SC for carry)
but I'm slowly moving more towards a 1911. I already have a carry weapon and I
loved shooting the .45 1911 we rented. The price is typically a little higher,
so I'm keeping an eye out for one at the local pawn stores and used section at
our local gun shop.

if you want a sidearm in the great outdoors, i'd suggest skipping
concealability and pick up a .357 ruger blackhawk. i know you said no
revolvers, but a revolver would provide more power and reliability if you come
across one of god's creatures. i'd suggest the biggest you can handle for
caliber, but a .357 gives you a lot of options.
also, since you're going to be outdoors and over water, they make stainless
versions which I think would be worth the extra money.

if you want one-size-fits-all, that would probably be a midsize or compact
glock in a 9mm or 40 S&W.

for real carry, my two guns of interest are the Beretta Nano and the Walther
PPS. ^concealed

some sites i use include www.gunblast.com, and on youtube, check out hickok45
i've also looked at some stuff by Nutnfancy, but he seems to be loved or hated.

also, just in my time researching i've used
http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/
http://www.theboxotruth.com/
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/

just to name a few, not really recommending, just what i've come across.

personally, I own a Ruger SR1911 .45 ACP, and my wife has the Beretta PX4 Storm
Compact 9MM. without having shot more than a combined 500 rounds through both
guns, I'd say they're both positive representatives of their respective
manufacturers.

g/l and keep us posted!

Haven't decided if it's the long
trigger pull, or the fact that I can look inside the frame and see where a
small chunk of metal is broken off and gone away! Oh yeah, reputation for
being cheaply made lol. I need to send it back to get that fixed sometime.

I thought the PF-11 trigger was even worse than the PF-9?

Speaking of mouse guns, I've recently taken a shine to the little Kel-Tec
P-3AT and PF-9. A buddy of mine uses a PF-9 for carry. I've fired it on a
couple of occasions, and I am suitably impressed.

I must say, having fired a fair number of rounds through both, that my primary
complaint with both guns is the extremely long D-A trigger pull. I have some
trouble with extremely small frame autos in general, as I have relatively
large hands, but I am very tempted to pick up a PF-11 for carry at some point.

If you are looking for somthing nicer, the new Kimber Solo looks nice. On my
budget, the the Kel-Tec's are nice enough.

We then found all the local
ranges (within an hour drive) that rented handguns and tried a whole lot to
find which ones each of us liked.
Oh, I think we went through the NRA basic course, so that was good. The focus
was on basic handling, operation, and safety. I think you already have that
down, though :)

I've learned a lot from reading on defensivecarry.com & going to the local gun
store and handling different guns... if you can rent guns you're interested in
at a shooting range that'd be helpful too.

A lot will depend on your size and how comfortable you want to be. I suppose
ruling out revolvers is no big deal, since there are so many automatics to
choose from. If you can carry something thick (double-stack magazine), a Glock
26 (9mm subcompact) or 19 (9mm compact) is hard to beat. They stand up to
sweat, they're reliable and accurate; carried in a holster that properly covers
the trigger they're safe.

IMHO, I think a single-stack gun is a lot easier to carry - I carry IWB and one
or two tenths of an inch slide thickness sure is bigger than it sounds. I
think a Kahr PM9/CM9 would be a really convenient carry, though you'll hear
more stories about reliability issues, and they are definitely more finicky
than the Glocks, and I don't know how well they fare against rust and such. I
can't recommend as I've never carried 'em. Maybe a Glock 36 (45acp single
stack compact)? Thinner than the G26 I carry most days.

I know plenty about hunting guns. I know nothing about handguns/sidearms. Where
is the best place to start in learning? My eventual future goal is to get a
concealed carry permit in MN soley for being able to take a firearm into the
woods with me with ease and without question. Here, we can open carry "on water
field and stream of the state" in certain circumstances, like target shooting.
I want to be able to carry while I'm portaging canoes in the BWCA and be easily
able to explain it and legally do it. I know all about the permits and classes
required. I just don't know where to start with the actual guns. Since it would
be for protection only, and for carrying while also carrying a pack and a
canoe, I'd prefer something smaller and lighter, but I don't want something
that is horrible inaccurate, either. Recommendations? I have shot many handguns
of shorts, from crappy shooting .380s to .38 specials to .44 magnums.I really
would rather not carry a revolver.

SledgeHammer is correct about the USPS (not ammo via the postal service)
FedEx and UPS will deliver ammo, however you need to be aware that many states
and localities have laws regarding ammo shipments.

I've seen some areas require shipments of Ammo go to an FFL holder, as well.

I live in Ohio... and in my county/city it's legal (but I gather shipments of
ammo aren't legal in all cities and counties). I have ordered from Natchez and
Cabela's on multiple occasions..... other than it being slow-boat ground
transport (due to it being considered hazardous) and requiring a signature of
someone over 21 to recieve it... No problems so far.

It is what
my Great Grandfather carried on his route (he was a mail man, back in the days
of the postmen carrying cash). Thing still shoots, but .32 s&w ammo is
expensive.... and the cylinder gap is huge on the thing, flames shoot out from
the sides and you get minor powder burns on your hands when firing, even if
your hand is nowhere near the cylinder. Iver Johnson has made some interesting
firearms.

i havent shot the 1911 with the new grips yet.
the 1911 doesn't kick bad having shot a .357, .41 and .45 long colt. the
weight of the machine absorbs a lot of the recoil.
i mostly wanted the new grips because the black would better match the gun, and
i wanted to preserve teh stock grips. plus, i just think the finger grooves
look cool.
it feels nice in the hand, very secure and stable. i think the pachmayrs are a
better choice because the hogues felt cheap to me. sure, they weigh more, but
the 1911 is heavy anyhow.
any recoil absorbing action would have to be on the rear of the gun, which this
has no padding or anything. however, better grip could better stabilize the
gun for follow-up shots.

as far as is it reliable? i bought this for a variety of reasons, i'd like it
to be a collector as the first evar ruger 1911 made in 2011, but i appreciate
that it is stainless, so it should hold up better under intermittent usage.
this will be a working gun.

Had a friend whose Taurus 44 mag was stolen.... when he got it back, it was
partially disassembled, and missing a screw. The Taurus lifetime warranty
covered it, but it took 3 months to get that single screw. Probably carried on
a donkey from Brazil.... it's not the only "very slow service" anecdote I've
heard about Taurus warranty service, but the only that I've heard firsthand.

I guess I have the opinion that Taurus revolvers are pretty good bang-for-buck
wise, but when I think of handguns, I'm usually thinking of something that can
be carried discretely and used to save my life; and I'd rather that be a
higher-end brand.

****

A poor bastard I know told me about the .40 S&W Hi-Point he bought at Gander
Mountain the other day. Had to replace a
firing pin and a spring or two, but it's still a gem and a blast to shot.
Before I got old and my eyes went south on me, I could pick off orange clay
pigeons up against a dirt hill at 100 yds routinely. Sadly, now I'm lucky if i
can see the damn things at a 100 yds.

my favorite gun is one of my cheapest ones at 110.00. A Remington 870 12 gauge
that someone painted with black spraypaint.

The thing is so smooth (even compared to other 870s) and devastating when you
load it up with 00 buckshot.

As much as people get all excited about .45 handguns, just hand me a shotgun
and let me blast things.

(Calhoun/33820) Luke--Well said, although I'd have used the term "gun snobs."

Luke--Well said, although I'd have used the term "gun snobs."

I've got a couple dozen guns of all types (pistols, rifles, and shotguns), and
with the exception of a 30 year old S&W .357, none of them are the high dollar
guns our gun snob friends would applaud. That said, I've never bought a gun I
didn't research thoroughly before I paid for it, regardless of the price. For
example, before I bought the Tararus TCP I posted on a week or so ago, I
researched every small .380 on the market, and came to the conclusion the TCP
was the best value for the dollar. I could have afforded anything I wanted,
but went with the best value from my perspective.

Back in Aug, a co-worker and I took an advanced tactical handgun course at a
local range that was taught by the former head of the regional SWAT team. The
class was restricted to four of us. During the nearly ten hour course, we
fired close to 400 rounds. Of the four of us, I was the only one who did not
experience a FTC/FTF the entire day. My buddy had a 3rd Gen Glock, one guy had
a Sig, and the other guy had a cosmic looking Chiappa Cobra revolver. I was
shooting a surplus Makarov firing Tulammo. Like all my guns, the Mak is well
cared for, properly cleaned and maintained. Similarly, my ammo is properly
stored. Not saying the other guys didn't take care of their guns/ammo, but
they were the one clearing jams and discarding ammo.

bang for the buck is a hipoint if your goal is holding up a pawn shop for ca$h
money.

but I get where you're coming from. Once you're attained a healthy
middle-class salary, it's nice to be able to not be stuck buying Taurus guns
just because that's the best you can afford.

I like paying for quality over 'flash' so I don't need guns with engraving or
chrome plating. But I would consider buying a Sig Sauer and justify its level
of build quality to make it 'worth it' over a cheaper gun.

The good news is that most Taurus guns are pretty good. Most Taurus owners
really like them. The people that badmouth them are the owners of more
expensive guns, which makes sense because they're more likely to find every
fault in the gun.

The gap in the cylinder on my .44 revolver is wider than it would be with a
ruger or smith and wesson, but it doesn't affect the way the gun works at all.

(Grayson/33818) Bang for the buck for me = Reliability/Performance/Lifetime of t...

Bang for the buck for me = Reliability/Performance/Lifetime of the firearm vs
cost. If I have to purchase multiple $400 firearms over a 10 year period due
to it not standing up to wear.... the $700 firearm wins... or if I have to
spens tons of money on the cheap firearm to maintain it... the more expensive
(yet more reliable firearm wins).

I have multiple SIGs... Only work I've ever had to do to them is replace worn
barrels and springs (after 25,000 or far more rounds have gone through them).

I've had to have entire mechanisms rebuilt on others (needed replacement slides
for berettas and glocks... needed cylinder replacements, or other expensive
parts for tauruses... and had several firearms that needed barrels after less
than 10,000 rounds.

And then there is the trust factor.... if I'm counting on it to absolutely
never fail me when my life depends on it... well that is worth tons right
there.

So SIG = Big bang for the bucks for me. I currently have a P220 that has
cycled over 100,000 rounds through it. Items replaced? Barrel 2x... Spring Kit
2x. I have over it's lifetime stovepiped a total of less than 100 rounds - and
pretty much all of those were sub-par reloads. I don't have a single other
firearm from another brand that has come near that kind of reliablity for an
auto... hell I've had revolvers with worse reliability than that.

I've never heard anyone advocate Sig as a "bang for the buck" choice...
considering their classic designs are all up in the high hundreds to low
thousands of dollars.

The P226 for example starts at like $750.

Taurus revolvers - I've had several cylinder issues on them where the cylinder
just doesn't want to lock correctly, on multiple different weapons. I would go
with a Smith first.

Taurus automatics - if you like the Beretta 92 series - the Taurus versions are
rock solid... why? because they are made on the same machinery that used to
make them for Beretta to the exact same specs. Now, some of the others in
their line aren't quite as reliable - but overall they aren't bad when I
compare their reliability to others in the same price range.

That said... BANG! for the buck.... I prefer SIGs for autos and S&W for
revolvers pretty much any day of the week.

Although I don't limit myself just to them - I do pretty much limit to them
when it comes to a carry piece (with the exception of my ankle piece which is a
Ruger .380).

Taurus revolves are good-to-great.

Taurus automatics can be hit or miss.

Taurus 1911s have some non-standard design changes that make getting parts a
challenge (losing one of the HUGE benefits to buying a 1911 in the first
place).

taurus isn't a lesser known brand. everyone knows it. because people are
cheap asses.

My 44 revolver is a taurus and I like it because it's a cheap version of a
Smith 629 with a lugged barrel.

I spent more for the smith and wesson .38 revolver I got because if I'm
carrying it, I don't want it to not work in the event i need to defend myself.

I'm sure a taurus would work, but the fit and finish was lesser than the s&w
that I decided it was worth it to spend more to get the percieved quality boost
of the way the gun functioned and felt in my hand.

1911 pistols are a whole collector thing you could devote your life to.. There
are so many. If I ever get one, it'd be for pissing around in the woods,
which is why I'd have some fixed sight Army version that costs about 500 bucks
or less.

DH>
True, I hadn't really considered resale value. Though to be fair, I think
Taurus is one of the very few brands that keeps its lifetime warranty when sold
to a new owner. Still seems like a pretty steep price for a lesser-known
brand. I really like the Kimber 1911, which is only a little more.

Count>
I like the new grips (saw the pic). Do they help with recoil? My wife really
likes finger grips on guns.. it's part of what went into her decision to pick
up her Bersa Thunder 9mm.

I cannot imagine paying 800 bucks for a Taurus, when I could put a couple
hundred more beside it and get a Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory, or Kimber;
or maybe a Sig Sauer or STI...

The Taurus 1911 might be alright too, but I'd sure rather figure out a way to
pony up a little extra for a better gun with better resale value.
