maybe it is just the G series.. It has a full numberic keypad and the trackpad
offset, which is kind of annoying too. But it was less then 600 bucks with dual
core i5.. So i didnt expect it to be quite the same quality as a thinkpad,
although I wish it was.. :)

I have an Ideapad u330, and the construction seems every bit as solid as on the
Thinkpads. It's better than the T40 - T42 that would flex so much the
motherboard would fail.

(Cyanide/110070) well.. I was kind of expecting something like this..

well.. I was kind of expecting something like this..

In short dell Consumer Groups revenue dipped 2%..

http://www.electronista.com/articles/12/02/21/dell.touts.record.enterprise.but.
masks.pc.trouble/
Dell touts record enterprise but masks PC trouble

Dell on Tuesday reported results that it touted as producing records but which
signaled continued problems in its mainstay home PC business. Although its
revenue was up two percent from winter a year ago to just over $16 billion, its
profit was down 18 percent to $764 million. The largest drag was in the
consumer group, where its revenue dipped two percent to $3.2 billion and it saw
an extremely sharp 43 percent drop in operating income to $39 million.

It came in spite of record growth in enterprise and healthy performance in
small business.

The Texas PC builder declined to explain the cause for the home division's
drop, although it may have given away a continued iPad effect. Most of the loss
was concentrated in the US, where the iPad and Apple as a whole are strongest.
Revenue from everywhere else grew 10 percent, Dell said.

Dell shouldn't be suffering from an overdependence on netbooks, having almost
completely quit the category aside from niche models, but its emphasis on
low-end notebooks has still left it stalled in PC share where Apple has been
gaining. Most of its hopes for 2012 are focused on both enterprise as well as a
partial shift towards the higher end through PCs like the XPS 14z and XPS 13.

You're never going to have an issue underclocking a chip.

As for performance, if you run anything cache-heavy, you'll likely see a boost.
If not, just leave the Celeron in there.

Friend has a older system I am doing some work on
Only supports P4 with 400MHz Bus
It has a Celeron 2.2 in it now
I have a P4 2.8 533 FSB chip
It runs in the system but is only detected as a P4 2.1 Ghz
I assume it is because it is being underclocked because of the 400Mhz bus
Will there be any issues running it underclocked? I assume the P4 chip running
at 2.1 is still going to be better then the Celeron running at 2.2

http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=wireless+hdmi

Seriously. If upgrading isn't an option, consider a wireless HDMI solution.
But, you'll need to also get a converter to get from VGA to HDMI.

Another option is this:

http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=wireless+vga

This one might be a good bet since it does both VGA and Audio:
http://tinyurl.com/7w79xh4

Yes, the wireless VGA is more expensive; that's because you have multiple A/D
conversion steps along the way.

(Secretary/110044) Victorinox Launches Swiss Army Knife With a Terabyte of Storage

Victorinox Launches Swiss Army Knife With a Terabyte of Storage

http://blogs.wsj.com/tech-europe/2012/01/12/victorinox-launches-swiss-army-knif
e-with-a-terabyte-of-storage/

January 12, 2012, 6:50 AM GMT
By Nick Clayton

For a number of years Victorinox has been selling high-priced USB memory sticks
which mimic its classic Swiss Army knife design. The move was initially
effectively forced on the business.

The company was hit hard by the security clampdown against airborne terrorism.
Its ubiquitous stands filled with ruby-red pocket knives disappeared from
airport departure lounges almost overnight.

Substituting a USB memory stick for a blade could be seen as a gimmick. The
quality of memory technology might have been higher than most of its
competitors, but the difference was fairly subtle.

At the giant Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, however, Victorinox
revealed a range of devices which can definitely be described as at the cutting
edge of technology. Most impressive is what the company says is the "world's
smallest high-capacity SSD" (solid state drive). There are versions offering up
to a terabyte of storage, 1,000 gigabytes, which is considerably more than most
laptop hard drives.

Victorinox has also managed to develop a single connector for USB 2 and 3 as
well as eSATA 2 and 3. Less obviously useful, but another claimed first, is the
E-paper display. And the "knives" come with a variety of security features.

Of course every Victorinox launch has to offer some versions where ridiculous
numbers of features are squeezed into the standard form. This time there is the
"Presentation Master" with Bluetooth remote control, laser pointer, biometric
fingerprint reader, USB flash drive and choice of flight or non-flight bodies.

The last option is standard across the range, so as you dash to the airport you
will have to find the extra handle which comes without scissors, blade and nail
file with a screwdriver tip. Either that or you will have to leave your data at
home.

The company press release includes more details of the range.

Give a defrag a try if possible. IIRC, Windows -- especially XP -- requires
certain operating system files to be in a specific location on the partition
and if it doesn't find them there, it throws the missing/corrupt error. Disk
cloning software often doesn't give a damn on file location when cloning a
drive/partition. I've seen defragers do the same thing - one of the older
versions of Diskeeper would often boark a WinXP install because its boot defrag
option would erroneously move WinXP system files to more read-efficient areas
of the disk platter when WinXP expected those files to be left alone at a
pre-determined sector on the disk/partition -- efficiency be damned.

I have a 160gig drive that I am trying to clone to a 500gig drive using
Clonezilla. The original drive has an Ubuntu partition, a Windows partition and
then a partition for data. I think the Ubuntu install actually consists of two
partitions since it has a swap space.

Clonezilla faithfully did a disk-to-disk clone, recreating the partitions. But
when I booted off the new drive, I initally could not boot anything. I ran a
utility off of a Super Grub Disk, and restored grub. Now Ubuntu boots.

The Ubuntu loader gives an option for Windows, but when I choose it, I just
get:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file"

The Super Grub Disk has an option to fix the Windows MBR, but it doesn't seem
to be successful. I booted off a WinXP disk into Recovery Mode and ran:

fixmbr \Device\Harddisk0\Partition2

....but no luck.

Any advice?

(Count Chocula/110038) just a little story

just a little story
so my 2 year old Canon Pixma M620 gave me a "print head" error.
a little troubleshooting turned it into a "b200" error, which required
"service."
it wasn't even worth looking up the number to know that it would cost half the
price of a new printer to get this one looked at.
so i call Canon, and they offer me 25% off a comparable printer, an MG5220, $79
shipped to me after tax, 2 days shipping. Whatever, it's an expense, i'll go
for it.

well, they have problems with my discover card, something about their system
not recognizing my security code. i go back and forth with discover, and
determine the problem is probably canon's, but they have no clue how to make it
work. they want to use a different card, but i use discover for my business
purchases, and i feel like it's really their problem to fix.

so, screw it, i go out to shop for a printer, and wal-mart has the exact same
printer for $60 on the shelf, out the door, up and running, and paid for with
my Discover card.

so, their problem saved me a good $15, which, i suppose is really my company,
but still. and they were kinda, not jerks about it, exactly, but like "i've
been doing this for 12 years, i know what i'm doing, discover won't use the
security code, so neither will we," or something like that. and the odd thing
is that my discover statement actually showed an authorization from Canon, so
it was all set to go through.

i did shop other printers, but for $60, i couldn't find anything even close.

true story

The new drives are lightning. Well, one is - I have one installed, with the old
Windows drive installed in internal drive bay #2 because I still need to move
data over. Later this weekend I'm going to have to play musical hard drives;
put both old ones in, mount the new one through the eSATA port and export my
Lightroom and DPP catalogs, then install both new ones and then install Linux
on the new empty one and move /home over. Oh, and then deactivate Lightroom
and CS since on CS I am otherwise out of activations.

I am very, very happy with the new drive - 20 seconds to boot to the new
desktop, then maybe 3-4 seconds to launch Firefox and OpenOffice, and the
learning algotithm in the HDD seems to work because Windows bootups seems
to be getting quicker, not slower as I install more apps.

I had XP on the system and it never gave me issues but when I
went win7 that is when it would happen. I tried MP classic, Media player, Media
Centers player, power DVD all do the same thing out of the blue I get a reboot
while playing video. IF I use VLC I have no issues. It would be fine for me but
the wife want to watch netflix with it and that also reboots it. I will try the
5200 and see how it does. If not I see 6200,s with 256-512 ram pretty cheap on
ebay.

Video card is not so much the issue as much as the horsepower to decode a 1080
source. CPU would be the bigger issue. Do you have the same problem when you
run Media Player Classic?

Have a desktop HTPC system that works great if I use vlc but any other media
player crashes it. I think its the ATI video card.
I have a Nvidia fx5200 128M card
Will that be enough to drive the 1080 42 inch TV the system is connected to?
The ATI was a 512 Mb card. All I really use it for is playing video files. No
bluray. Mostly AVI, Hulu and dvd iso's
I used to know the forula for figuring out how much video ram you would need to
push . Res*Colordepth*/screen size or something like that

See, I got the accedintal coverage for it when
I bought it. Drop the laptop in a bucket of water? Ooops. They'll fix it.
Sadly, the biggest screen they make now is 16.4. I've yet to see a screen as
nice as this 18.4" I've got in a lappy.

Guess I need to keep it away from the water ;)

I'm in Active Directory training at a Microsoft campus this week. We've
been provided with Thinkpad W520's.

Damn fine laptop. 8 core i7, 16GB of memory. Screen is a little small for my
liking (I like my 18.4" Vaio screen). Otherwise, thing is crazy fast and
we're using Hyper-V so we can have all of our various DC's and
workstations up and running. Each student has their own little micro
mobile lab enviornment. Very nice.

We keep asking if we can take them as parting gifts....

I just received two ST750LX003 750GB 7200rpm hard drives for my laptop -
reviews on the drive indicated that it is extremely fast due to the integrated
8GB flash drive (it's marketed as a "hybrid" drive) and I'm really excited
about the performance boost, because the well-reviewed 640GB drives I bought
not too long ago turned out to be horribly slow in real life.

Has anyone tried these Seagate hybrid drives? Any tips on tuning them for
Windows 7? Linux performance has always been fine on any hard drive, but I have
been annoyed by annoyingly long boot times in Windows 7.

Grrrr... finally plugged my new 3 TB disks into my computer last night, and lo!
They show as 1.5 TB. As I'm using a pretty recent Linux kernel, I'm assuming
it's my BIOS's fault for not seeing 1K sectors. Is this common? My M/B's
about four years old -- a cheap one. Think there's a chance I can flash the
BIOS, or just time to pick up a newer board that's probably more powerful?

I dunno...

While I am not at the 18TB level -- 2TB in a raid1 nas would keep most of my
daily ventures happy -- I do not think I am ready to trust my data to
someone else in the cloud.

Cloud storage vendors don't necessarily use consumer grade drives.

Not everyone has 18TB of data... That market isn't drying up, it is the regular
consumer market.. Hmm buy a new harddrive for 100 bucks or buy a new computer
for 300-400 with the larger drive, and 2x+ as fast and a new OS.. (which is
what a lot of people actually do..)

The other option, is they go buy a tablet, then keep everything in the
cloud, then they dont have to deal with the geek squad at all.

It is a low margin business and their profits are diminishing because of cloud
storage, the SSD market, and people don't necessarily need a lot of storage.

While I agree it is a bullshit excuse, there are other factors.

What I mean by people don't necessarily need a lot of storage, is
I had a 1GB drive and was drooling over a 2GB drive. I have a 1TB drive,
and only got a 2TB drive, because I wanted another drive, not because I was
out of space. I have an 80GB drive in my laptop and that is -big- enough
it isnt -fast- enough for that machine. But that machine is pokey anyway,
and im more likely to buy a new machine then I am a new harddrive.

No, I'm not disputing the price jump rationale. Supply has gone markedly down,
and demand has stayed the same so of course price is going to rise...that's
Economics 101. What I'm calling bullshit on for the HD makers is using that
rationale to shorten the warranties.

Yeah, but the price jump really IS the flooding... a large % of hard drive
makers got fucked by that and it'll be a few months before they can catch up
back, in the meantime, significant shortage, which means much higher prices.

Even big OEMs have had trouble getting enough HDs

I guess they are blamming all on the
floods.

Blackmagic is pretty much the gold standard if you want to record HDMI in.
Their stuff does respect HDCP, so you can't record copy-protected stuff out of
the box, but if you're using all of your own content or recording stuff that
isn't protected (such as Xbox 360 gameplay) then that's what you want.

All digital HDMI workflow.

Really, they're pretty much the only HDMI in option in the consumer/pro-sumer
space.

Tink

As Cyanide said, the simplist solution might be to get a VCR/DVD-R
combo. Insert VCR tape, insert DVD-R, click button, walk away.

Another option, long the lines of what WORF said is a capture video card
or USB dongle. If you already have a device that will play the VCR tapes,
you can plug the output of that into the input of a capture device.
Then you hit record on the PC and you get your .mov or .mpg or .avi
Edit away. Then burn.

The reason I posted, is you could get a device that will let you record
TV (over the air OTA) and maybe cable card. Turn your machine into a
DVR.

Tink> If you're just doing analog stuff from a VCR, you are looking to spend
less than $50.

My recommendation (you can find it on Amazon, no longer made) is the Adaptec
GameBridge. It is one of the best quality USB encoders I've seen.

question for the masses! Let's say I was looking for something (from Bestbuy
since I have gift-cards) that I could hook up my old VCR into to capture video
and then convert into movies (.mpg or .avi) to either archive or burn to DVD,
what should I be looking for? I have about $140 to spend in my budget.

Ideally this would have either conversion software or maybe spits it back out
as raw video or something.

I'm just not quite sure what I'm looking for: it would be a video device
(card?) that accepts the RCA video and sound outputs from my VCR and then maybe
outputs to USB? (my video card only has outputs I think, I don't think it has
any input slots)

I just have the gift cards burning a hole in my pocket and trying to find
something to spend, and not seeing anything that I'd like for gamin just yet :)

COnsidering a Pogoplug for a homeserver. Any experience with actually building
one of those? I've got an older pentium 4 sitting in the meter closet. Prime
reason to change would be to use less power. Services it runs now are

- dhcp (could be done by router instead)
- imap (vital)
- web server with gallery
- home directory with raid1 storage used mostly for picture backups
- an external drive to make automatic backups to

Most of all, it's my "ssh access point" for when I don'thave another accesible
machine.

I'm wondering if a pogo plug with one or more external drives could actually
serve as a proper replacement speed-wise (clearly no raid 1), and if the power
usage would be significantly lower or not really.

Any experiences?

Here is another open source ARM project that is just starting...
http://rhombus-tech.net//

The first product will be an EOMA-PCMCIA CPU card, using the 1.5ghz Allwinner
A10 ARM Cortex A8. Thanks to the low cost of the Allwinner Cortex A8,
mass-volume pricing (just for the CPU card, and therefore excluding tax,
shipping, profit, a case and a power supply) looks to be on target for around
$15: 40% lower than the raspberrypi which is only a 700mhz ARM11 and is
therefore at least three times slower than the Allwinner A10. The prototype
schematics are presently being developed. Allwinner very graciously agreed to
provide RH Technology with advance access to the GPL Source Code, which will be
placed into the Rhombus git repository shortly: in the meantime please see the
kernel compile page - discussion is taking place on arm-netbooks

The second idea under consideration is to adapt the beaglebone, which has full
CAD/CAM schematics, publicly available under Open Hardware Licenses. The reason
for considering this CPU is that in mass-volume it is as low as $USD 5. Placing
this into an EOMA-PCMCIA-compliant format would provide a low-cost second
option, and use of the AM3357 instead of the AM3358 would allow products that
used the AM3357 to be FSF Hardware-endorsed.

You've basically got a 50/50 shot.

On hardware like that I've often seen a small adapter jammed in there. It may
look like it's "part" of the drive, but if not, you should be able to just pry
it off and get at he standard connector inside.

The other option is that they just did some crazy hack and soldered the damn
adapter right to the board, but I'm going to doubt this is the case if only
because they might have wanted to retail flexibility in manufacturing.

BTW, if you don't want to mess with it, there is a third option. Most newish
mobos these days have a USB header or two just sitting on the mobo unused. They
don't look like USB because it's just the pins, but a simple cable from the
local PC shop and you've fot an internal USE port. Mount the drive and just
plug the USB in internally and you're golden.

But im assuming that is all web based
after that although you can enable ssh to it. Im trying to figure out
how to back it up before I test registering it.

Zipo> Actually from what I have heard the MS Home Server stuff works pretty
well. I believe VPN is bundled. Remote Desktop licensing is normally based on
what you are connecting to, so if you are connecting to Windows desktops you
will be fine and Windows servers come with 2 RD licenses.
You can get all this done with Linux as well, naturally. I just wanted to
let you know RD is not going to cost you anything additional.

Short of our Sun boxes, our HP/Compaq/Dell servers
have the same life span (either the components die, or we force a complete line
refresh regardless of the actual status). The server stuff goes into EOS/EOL
fairly quickly in the enterprise world too (4-6 years).

I'll probably use onf of the MS server products but am not ruling out Linux,
because of access technology's limitations, you have to have an expensive
license to do terminal server or remote desktop and if Linux, I can ssh in and
use the command line..

I'll repost here since the discussion has picked up here instead of intel..
I've been thinking of wanting to do something at home.. Maybe not professional
serverhh hardware but I have been thinking of one of the atom booksize
nettops.. I have ram and storage available.. I am mainly needing a vpn solution
at home.. I am using an airport extreme for file sharing and network printing..
I would have rather hadnled that on the server side too but my wife likes the
extreme.. I travel a lot for work and often need access to the home network.. I
don't want to use hamachi.. I want to control the solution from end to end.. I
want to be able to encrypt my connection when I am connected to unsecure wifi..

I have a Western Digital MyPassport 1TB drive where the interface just quit, so
I pried open the case. The drive purports to be SATA, but it's not like any
SATA connection I've ever seen, to include having a USB port soldered directly
on the board, and having two rows of six pins that look like jumper pins.

Is there an adapter I can purchase so I can use the drive? I had a USB cable
that fit, so I tested it, and the drive seems to be in good working order.

If you want to play with real commercial hardware, you can pick up old two-way
1U servers for around $100. It will not match the Pogoplug for power
consumption, but an HP/Dell/IBM server will be well-made and expandable.

Lochner, how old are the machines that you are repurposing? Having worked in
hosting/data-centers I can assure you that failure rates for old machines, no
matter the original purpose, are relatively high. I'd also like to point out
that most server class hardware is exceptionally hot and noisy. Add to that
the fact that the fact that storage for server class hardware tends to be
pretty expensive, depite for the large part, being the same as desktop hardware
with a better warranty.

At any given price level, newish desktop hardware is likely to be quiter,
produce less heat, easier to find a place for, and have a faster processor
than the equivilent server hardware. It will also likely be cheaper to repair.
That said, if I didn't transcode video and audio, and have a need to support
add-on cards, I would probably have gone to something like a pogoplug a long
time ago.

Plus it is kind of fun, and it is new to me.
You also don't feel bad if you end up throwing it out. But it depends on
what you are doing, it might not be fast enough or you might need a couple.

25 bucks from J&R with free shipping (if you sign up for their account.)
it is kind of hard to pass up even though it doesnt have sata and you have
to take it apart to get to the serial port.

We've been getting a lot of Intel tablets at the office lately. Some really
nice Atom machines on the horizon, but they're still going with basically the
same GMA series graphics chipsets that have jack support in Linux. Intel's
really stuck with Microsoft right now on their low end. And considering
that 90% of typical tablet usage is focused on the UI and graphics, and
not CPU intensive stuff they seem to just have it backwards. Or maybe
they figure that lunch has already been eaten. I myself would love to
see a decent hybrid Sandy Bridge tablet machine running Linux with a
decent touch interface for Linux. I think that's my ideal portable now.

Microsoft didnt release windows 8 beta or whatever, for arm.. I left them a
nasty note. :)

However, the Pogoplug B04 in pink is 25 bucks today from J&R with free shipping
if you sign up for their "friends" (limit 2). I just ordered one for a xmas
present. It is am armv6, but oxfords driverws are proprietary, so while linux
runs on it, arch linux is having issues supporting it. However a Marvell
armv5 is in the Pogo Mobile, and that is 50 bucks from buy.com.

IMHO neither are quite as nice as the other plugs on the market, but they
cost 2x as much too.

seems clean, does what i need to, didn't even make me hunt for the file, just
found the correct location right away.
here's what I take to be the relevant info

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: USBPORT.SYS

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x1000007e (0xffffffffc0000046, 0xfffff800032ab590,
0xfffff880031e0e80,
0xfffff880031e0f20)

*** USBPORT.SYS - Address 0xfffff8800441277e base at 0xfffff88004400000
DateStamp
0x4d8c0c08

and then some reference
"Caused by Address - USBPORT.SYS+1277E."

Google shows a wide range of answers, but it always happens when i use my
logitech 9000 camera with the logitech software. when the software is
uninstalled and I use just the windows or browser camera, it works fine, but in
low resolution only.

also, the BSOD doesn't happen right away, it can run for a couple seconds, then
*poof*, gone. I've had 7 of these crashes this year, possibly more, depending
on how many dmp files my computer keeps.

i also tried the camera in 2 different USB ports.

I stopped dealing with webcams once I seen the TV-OUT jack on my Sony digital
camera and Nvidia/ATI started adding VIVO jacks on their video cards. Since
they don't do that anymore, there's always cheap Hauppauge TV Tuner cards out
there that'll do the trick and probably have 64-bit drivers worth a shit.

Danix> Intel is already worried about ARM hitting the low-end x86 market.
In fact the tablets and such have already taken a bite out of the low-end
laptop market.

My favorite webcam is actually an xbox 360 live vision camera. It doesn't have
autofocus, which I don't mind because I'm sitting at my desk, not running
around the room. The low light performance is very good, the camera has decent
automatic white blanace, and it outputs 30fps at 480p (4:3). It's also widely
available, and cheap (around $17 including shipping). To top it all off, it
has good driver support for Windows, Linux, and OSX, at the very least.

i have a logitech 9000 webcam that BSOD's at random on Win 7 64 bit.
My gut suggests that this is a driver/software issue. the camera works fine
with stock settings, but i can't get above 320 when recording.
when i install the logitech software via auto-update, it works for a minute,
then BSOD again. there is no useful message, but I suspect the software.
so, i fear that all logitech cameras would produce the same result using the
same software. that feels a bit irrational, but for my money, i'm not in the
mood to gamble.

is there a non-logitech webcam that's worth a squirt? initial reviews of MS
cams suggest they have crappy autofocus that never settles down. what are my
options?
thx

I'm not sure what I'm looking for... but does anyone make adapters for either
RAM, or maybe a RAM-disk... or maybe even some adapter I'm not yet thinking of
tthat utilizes old existing laptop (so dimm) RAM?

We have several 512MB sticks that we're not using, and I don't have any old
laptops or anything that could use it, and I hate to see them go to waste.

I was thinking maybe a PCI ram-disk type setup might be nice to use for temp
files for web browsing, other cache files, or something. Shit I dunno

AMD did succed in one thing: extending x86 to 64-bit and probably killing IA64.
The downside is that we're doomed to stay stuck on crappy x86 arch instead of
moving to something better.

.... though ARM might pull that off in the near future...
