Probably not, due to Bean being sick and Matrix having a death in the family.

We don't have to worry about the academic year, though, I don't know that we
have any users at this point who are current full time students who live on
campus.  I like Matrix's idea of doing a fall nic.  Typically, fall nics have
failed, but if we start now, it might work.  Might be easier, summer is over,
people aren't working around vacation schedules, etc.

I do agree, mothersday weekend is rough for a lot of people - esp since some of
the people who likely to come are mothers themselves. Pushing it back a week is
still doable and yeah we may lose a person or three, but it makes it more
likely.

What about the following weekend?  It's a couple of months out, and as far as I
know no one has said anything about buying airline tickets yet.

Unfortunately, Mother's Day weekend is an issue for those who might otherwise
make the effort to attend.  The problem isn't just "smarmy families," but also
people in families whose spouses do not use ISCABBS.  Can you imagine a dad
telling his wife that he's not going to be home on mother's day, because he's
going to hang out with friends from the internet?

When we have more of a date picked out, is when it makes sense to send a
message to all. If you send people too many messages, they either ignore/delete
them or leave the group... Once we have a date, we can create a group related
event and invite everyone, and if they hate those emails, they can leave the
event, but stay in the group. (I know it sounds silly, but I do events all the
time...)

The hotel - outright lie to - they want to hear a number like 20 rooms. So tell
them 25. They give you a discount that can often be beat by an online discount
service anyway. But hey you have rooms blocked in until a few weeks before the
nic. If you only sell one room, they still honor the discount, and they don't
charge you anything for over booking.

The shelter - can you get prices and post them? We can just get that taken care
of now.

Entertainment - right now concentrate on a venue, but don't worry so much about
reserving space. We had plenty of nights-in-a-bar without reserved space, and
it even works out pretty well that way. Some people will play pool, some dates,
some just drink, etc... if you find out a few weeks before the nic that a good
number of people are coming, see about also getting a room thrown in. This is
cheaper/free if you DO have 20 rooms booked by then anyway.

The hotel needs to know roughly how many rooms to block out. Last few nics that
were highly attended, we had around 20 to 30 rooms that were booked. Last nic
only 1 room was used. I also need to figure out a shelter size for the park
part of the Nic and pay for that. I need to get a venue for the evening
entertainment on Saturday night - either a room at the hotel or a bar like
we've done in the past where we have kareoke or tables reserved.

The issue with planning the nic this year is that previous venues that just
gave us the space because they knew we'd have a large group, don't want to give
me the space this year because I can't give them an idea of how many people are

I didn't think that I was arguing anything. I know that what I want may never
come to fruition, but - I figure that if we get a jump on the discussion of
planning, when we actually start the planning will have a bit of a jump on it
as far as what we ALL want. Now I know that we may not be able to get the
amount of people/excitement/fun/etc. that we had back last millenium. I DO
hearby suggest that we can make it a go to have the best possible 'nic that
we can have. Yes, demographics can hurt, but if we plan for it, the sky is
the limit.

I know no one will know the weather we are having until MUCH closer to the
date...my crystal-ball has been acting-up lately. But, in days of yore, it
has been held in April, anywhere from the 17th to the 24th of the month. I do
NOT believe it has ever been held in March or May...but mebby we could plan it
in May...'twould have a chance to get even warmer. ;> Just a thought.

Yeah, we would have to put it to a weekend that life isn't happening too
much...there is a whole lot of two letters that happen in it frequently:

Why are you arguing?  Are you just looking for an argument?
I'm saying that November of the previous year is too earlier, and earlier than
the Nic is ever planned.  As Freud and Bean both noted, there are reasons that
we don't start planning next years Nic this early out.

January has always give plenty of time and allowed people to have a better idea
of their calendars.  I think it's safe to say that the majority of people
attending have more of an issue with things that they are required to schedule
around.  I don't know many people who have their work schedules written in
stone 6 months ahead of time, not to mention family obligations.

Also, as noted, we will not be able to reserve venues until a later date.

Feel free to suggest dates that will work for you, but don't expect everyone
else to be able to make concrete plans.

I am having a bad day so this post will be short

I cant reserve a park shelter until 2010 and that is the main reason why we
waited til January to pick the nic weekend - the parks dept opens up shelters
at the beginning of the year

Also, I can't reserve the party room or the block of hotel rooms until the new
year as I have previously had to pay a deposit for the room

I think picking a date in January gives people 4 month notice as to the weekend
in question, time to make flight arrangements, see if tax returns can pay for
the trip

In years past I have polled people as to whick weekend works and not schedulesd
it on Easter weekend. Last year we had low turn out due to people losing jobs,
bad economy, etc and I am tryi g to think of different things this year

I think it is better to suggest when you think the nic should be, than argue
about when if the proper time to schedule it - suggest dates, we'd probably do
a Friday to Sunday Brunch schedule again

idea to schedule the Nic now?  That really doesn't make much sense.  I don't
know until sometime in January if I'm going to be oncall during the Nic
weekend.  I won't know if my kid has a school function until the second half of
the year starts.  I don't know if I'll be getting a Christmas bonus, giving me
extra cash to spend a weekend in Iowa.  And I'm not terribly unique.
Which is why it makes sense to start planning in January.  Just like we do
every single year.

        While I'm not going to kill the idea of iscanic continuing, I think it
is completely unrealistic to even imagine that it will ever be anything like it
used to be.  Back in the early days of isca, the nics were comprised of a bunch
of college students, mainly from IC, Ames and surrounding states, who could
take a weekend to come party.  Probably half or more actually lived in Iowa
City and socialized anyway, frequently at the House of Chaos.
        The userbase is now spread across the country and made up of people who
have real jobs, families and bills to pay.
        As for me, my first nic was nic #2 and the tiny gathering that we
managed last year will probably be my last.
        If someone wants to attempt to coordinate a gathering, they're welcome
to use this forum to discuss it.  If Bean wants to be involved, she will come
here to let you know.  She has quite a bit on her plate at the point and is not
likely to be able to start planning anything for quite awhile, if at all.

With all due respect, and I think it's great that you want to get the ball
rolling, I think the first thing to do is coordinate with Bean and Freud.

They have organized the Nic for years now, and already have the resources and
connections to make for smooth planning.  I think it would be next to
impossible for someone who doesn't really know or talk to regular Nic attendees
to do the planning.  I'm certainly not saying that you shouldn't take part in
the planning, but Freud and Bean already have processes in place, and should
probably be contacted before anything else.

Friday April 24th to Sunday April 26th

Friday night we have the party room at the AmericInn available for meeting,
drinking, swimming in the pool, listening to music, hanging outness.

Friday during the day there will be a Ladies Lunch or Saturday morning.

Saturday during the day will be either meeting at City Park or doing something
fun like going to Planet X and playing skeeball, etc. City Park was horridly
flooded last year so we didn't picnic there and I'm trying to figure out if
the shelters are okay now.

Saturday night we'll go out on the town and PARTAY.

Sunday people eat brunch and chat and then head on their way
