A man attempting to burglarize an Edinburgh, Scotland home fled when
faced with Thor. The home belongs to Torvald Alexander, 38, who had
returned from a New Year's party dressed as the Norse god of thunder and
surprised the thief. From The Telegraph:

Mr Alexander said: "As soon as he saw me his eyes went wide with terror.

"He looked like he had had a few drinks and decided to do a late night
break in, but he hadn't counted on the God of Thunder living here."

He added: "I had just got back from a fancy dress New Year's party and
because I have a Norwegian name I decided to go as Thor.

"It took ages making the cape, helmet and breast plate, and I must admit
it was a bit chilly walking home, but when I saw that guy I just went
mad and charged at him, my cape flying behind me.

is my favorite...

The Snohomish Smokescreen

In September, a robber disguised as a gardener pepper-sprayed an armored
car driver using a pesticide sprayer and ran off with a bag stuffed with
$400,000 in cash. When police arrived seconds later, they found the
sidewalk crowded with dozens of men decked out in the same attire as the
perp: blue shirt, Day-Glo vest, safety mask and glasses. While the cops
hacked through a forest of suspects, the real perp fled to a nearby
creek and escaped in a waiting inner tube.

Turns out the unwitting decoys had been lured to the crime scene by a
Craigslist ad that promised construction work to those showing up in a
"yellow vest, safety goggles, a respirator mask... and, if possible, a
blue shirt." A month later, following a lead from a homeless man who
witnessed the preparation for the Brinks job, police arrested
28-year-old Anthony Curcio fresh from a Las Vegas vacation. Curcio is
now charged with "Interference with commerce by threats or violence,"
because "Pulling the most awesome robbery ever" isn't listed in the U.S.

Chessington Zoo in London has issued an apology to guests after giving
the gorillas a Christmas treat of Brussels sprouts. The seasonal sprouts
are highly nutritious, but the gorilla farts caused horror among people
around them.

Gorilla keeper Michael Rozzi said: .We feed the gorillas brussel
sprouts during the winter because they are packed with vitamin C and
have great nutritional benefits.

"Unfortunately, an embarrassing side effect is that it can cause
bouts of flatulence in humans and animals alike.

"However, I don.t think any of us were prepared for a smell that

The zoo has taken the sprouts off the menu while the zoo is open to the
public. The gorillas will enjoy them when the zoo is closed on Christmas
Day.

SPCA of Luzerne County removed three kittens and a cat from a home outside
Wilkes-Barre.

Officer Carol Morrison said the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to

selling the pierced kittens on eBay.

"It's unbelievable anybody would do this to kittens," Morrison said.

Charges are likely against the homeowner, whose name was not released.

Morrison said the woman has a pet grooming business in the basement of the
home.

Foot Grows in Baby's Brain
Doctors Find Foot Growing in Infant's Brain, but Can't Explain Why Yet

By LAUREN COX
ABC News Medical Unit
Dec. 18, 2008

A doctor in Colorado found a surprise when removing what he thought was a
benign growth from a newborn's brain. Instead of a microscopic tumor, out
popped a tiny foot, partially formed hand, a thigh and another partially formed
foot.

"It would be a shock to even the most experienced pathologist cutting into a
tumor to see this," Dr. Paul Grabb told the ABC affiliate KMGH.

Grabb said he could not tell whether the miniature limbs were from a benign
stem cell tumor called a teratoma or the remnants of an identical twin that did
not split off and survive, a condition called fetus in fetu.

"It looked like the breach delivery of a baby, coming out of the brain," Grabb
told The Associated Press. "To find a perfectly formed structure is extremely
unique, unusual, borderline unheard of."

The baby, Sam Esquibel, was 3 days old when doctors at Memorial Hospital for
Children in Colorado Springs discovered a microscopic tumor in his brain. A
hospital representative said Sam is alive and recovering well after his
operation, but his family declined to discuss his case further until its
interview with ABC's "20/20" in January.

Whether the growth was the remains of a twin sibling or the work of renegade
stem cells in Sam's body is hard to tell.

But stem cell experts who study teratoma believe the body parts are likely the
result of fetus in fetu.

"This is pretty bizarre. ... It's certainly possible [it's a teratoma]," said
Ed Morrisey, the scientific director of the University of Pennsylvania
Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Philadelphia.

"My guess is, it's probably not a teratoma, because the tissues themselves in a
teratoma are usually disorganized," said Morrisey.

Studying Stem Cell Tumors

Morrisey and other stem cell researchers create teratoma in mice to study how
one day doctors may coach stem cells into growing into specific types of
tissues that doctors need.

By altering embryonic stem cells gene by gene and then watching to see what
type of tissue -- nerve, muscle, hair, etc. -- they grow into, researchers can
advance toward learning what directs stem cells to form full organs.

But teratoma are known to form recognizable organs or limbs.

"If you take stem cells and inject them into mice they will spontaneously form
teratoma," said Morrisey. He said the teratoma that form, and the teratoma that
occur naturally, usually grow into disorganized clumps of tissue instead of a
fully formed organ.

"You'd form muscle, but it would just be a bunch of muscle cells together," he
said. "Not like a foot or a limb."

A Chinese man believed to have been killed by lightning was actually
done in by a small weather rocket found when it detonated during
cremation, police say.

Authorities said people who were in the Inner Mongolia province house
with Wang Diange -- who was overseeing a wake at the time of his death
-- discovered his body amidst rubble after a large explosion that
destroyed half of the home's roof, The Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.

The residents concluded that the home had been struck by lightning from
a thunderstorm and police concurred with the assessment, releasing
Wang's body for a funeral and cremation, the British newspaper said.

However, a few days after Wang's death, a weather rocket lodged in his
body exploded while the corpse was being loaded into the cremation
chamber, destroying the body and the doors of the cremation oven.

Authorities said a small piece of metal found in the oven after the
blast led investigators to a local weather bureau, which had been firing
rockets into the atmosphere in an attempt to protect tobacco crops from
large hailstones.

Weather bureau internal investigators said one of the shells must have
failed to detonate, crashed into the home where the wake was taking
place and lodged in Wang's body, where authorities said it was concealed
by the extensive injuries.

The weather bureau said it is paying Wang's family about $12,000 in
damages.

investigation or whether the kid was being supervised or not. Good job guys!

When something like that happens, a review by CPS is often _automatically_
triggered, even when the harm is exceedingly unlikely to have been caused by
neglect or negligence.

But they do get pretty draconian about it.

I can't believe the negligence of those parents, who had doors that can be
unlocked from the inside, and actually took their eyes off the child for the
minutes it would take for him to wander away, e.g. by using the bathroom
for more than a minute or two.

Maybe there's a history of problems with the family or something, but
failing that, it sounds like this was just really, really bad luck,
several wrong things happening at the same time....

I wasn't shocked by CPS, either.
I was surprised something horrible didn't happen to this toddler crossing a
road in the middle of the night, getting into a dollah store (where he could
have gotten into anything a kid shouldn't be getting into... all the stuff we
keep locked under the sink is on a nice display shelf for him to grab and get
into)
